Help Save Toto the Dog!
Toto the dog got kidnapped and tortured, ARG. Why are people such evil bastards?
But now the SF SPCA is taking care of him and they need your help to raise $5000 by February 10th to pay for his surgeries!
Here’s the story, according to the SPCA:
“Toto is a 12-year-old Yorkie who was stolen from his fenced-in yard. Eight months later he was returned to his owner’s doorstep,...

It's 2012, suckas! Time for martial law!
In case your always-politically-angry friend hasn’t talked your ear off about the National Defense Authorization Act yet, here are the details:
From Democracy Now: “A provision in the National Defense Authorization Act would authorize the military to jail anyone it considers a terrorism suspect anywhere in the world without charge or trial. The measure would effectively extend the...

Good Things Coming to Colorado!
Native Foods Veggie Soy Burger photo by KayOne73 on flickr.com
I love Colorado! But I’ve got a bunch of new reasons to love it more! I thought I’d share just to be a bitch and make you jealous. Or maybe to convince everyone on the coasts that the center of this country has something to offer other than Tea Parties and rodeos.
VegNews reports that Native Foods Cafe plans to open 15...

Jeff Mangum is VEGAN!? And he's on TOUR!? Get a...
You know, so we can all tie him up and marry him. The genius man-boy behind every hip-and-cool person’s favorite band Neutral Milk Hotel* is on tour, which is something he hardly ever does. Except for the animals BECAUSE HE’S AN AWESOME VEGAN. Of course he is! Look at him cuddle that chicken! I can’t wait for him to perform at our wedding when I marry him!
Because I think we...

The 20 Best Vegan Dishes in the Mission District!?
VegNews published this awesome list of their most favorite things to eat in the Mission. How do you feel about it? Agree? Disagree? Yeah, I’m pretty much hella agreeing, except my absolute favorite burrito is still El Farolito and ain’t no amount of Hep C or knife fights gonna change that.
[Little lighthouse, I love you, forever and ever. I don’t care if you stab me or shank...

DO IT: Be a Guest on Check Please, Bay Area!
Everyone, you need to be on this super fun food show on KQED and make all the other guests go out and eat delicious vegan food and then do something crazy like sip wine out of the host’s butt on air* and become internet famous. That’d be really great for vegans. SO SERIOUSLY GET ON IT!
Also, Check, Please! Bay Area is the greatest and if you haven’t watched an episode, take one...

Divino, the restaurant that replaced Fellini,...
So, we loved Berkeley’s Fellini but it’s long gone so we just have to go get used to that and get over it—which is very hard for us as WE HATE CHANGE. Anyway, the replacement, Divino, has posted their menu and it looks like a bunch of slow food hoo-hah but I’m thankful they’ll still have some vegan options, and the brunch looks especially good.
I don’t know, I love...

Hello, Friends! It's WTF Wednesday! (On Thursday!)
You guys, I am no longer watching Damages because it has hurt my life too much. First of all, Allen is not pleased by the lounging around I do in the dark waiting for him, and my coworkers are probably unhappy that I skulk around in the shadows wearing a feathered fright-wig and chuckling to myself. I don’t know of it’s the chuckling or the wig they’re concerned about, though. I...

Hodo Soy Beanery going into Costco!
Hodo just sent off their first shipment to S.F. Bay Area Costcos today and if they sell well, Costco will pick them up for regular procurement and possibly expand beyond the bay area! So yeah, if you’re already shopping at Costco, buy tons of it along with your 50 cases of toilet paper and your 10,000 cans of Hansen’s Natural (“Natural”?) Sodas! America, FUCK YEAH!
For a...

Photographer Brian Skerry had “a magical day with a right whale” and you know what? It sounds pretty magical. Right whales are so weird-looking and also amazing! And apparently this one wanted to hang out with some tiny harmless human beings for hours and hours.
National Geographic is the best! Love those crazy photographers.
[Ed.: Also, “The testicles of right whales are...

Come pig out with Grubwithus and Vegansaurus...
Dear Bay Area residents, do you want to chow down on fab veg Thai food in the best neighborhood in S.F. with the coolest person you can imagine? Then you will want to partake in Grubwithus’s VegWeek, particularly the meal on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Thai Idea. [Ed.: One of my favorite new restaurants! Maybe I’ll come too and be all, “BOO, MOTHERFUCKERS!” and then eat all your...

Chickens are the 95 percent!
Jan. 5 was National Bird Day, for which the Food Empowerment Project posted an amazing piece on chickens, who are the vast majority of animals used for food.
It starts:
When discussing what to post on Facebook for National Bird Day on January 5, my partner and I agreed that although ducks and turkeys should be recognized, we should talk about chickens raised for meat. Why? Because of the 10...

Recipe: Popeye Soup!
Ladies and gentlemen, may I present Popeye Dream Soup!!
It might be the most amazing soup I’ve ever eaten. I forgot to bring it to work for lunch today and I almost cried.
I was flipping through my new Friends of Animals magazine that they so nicely send to anyone who makes a donation (seriously, how nice is that?) and I stumbled upon this delicious-looking soup recipe.
I made it a few...

Café Gratitude legal issues "resolved," but no...
The Bay Citizen reported yesterday that the legal issues stemming from the lawsuits filed against the company late last year have been “resolved.” Unfortunately, according to the terms of the settlement, none of the parties can discuss those terms, so we don’t know what’s going on. The law! It’s so frustrating when it’s not working in your favor!
