Product Review: Nutty Cow Vegan Ricotta!
Now, I don’t know what’s on the market these days in terms of vegan ricotta, but it doesn’t matter. I just tried Nutty Cow’s ricotta, and it’s all that exists to me.
I hate to admit this, but I really wasn’t sure what to expect when Carla of Nutty Cow approached us to sample this product. Vegan cheeses are sometimes great, but most of the time, kind of weird....

Some adorableness from the New Hampshire SPCA. Ridic.
Society is getting a lot of mileage out of this song, right? Maybe it’s a special gift from aliens to improve society. Probs.

It's Paul Shapiro's Animal News You Can Use!
It’s Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use! WOOHOO!
Good news: A judge has rejected the foie gras industry’s attempt to put a hold on California’s new law banning the force-feeding of ducks (and selling products from force-fed ducks).
More good news: North America’s largest foodservice distributor, Sysco, is the latest food giant to come out against gestation crate confinement...

Protest the terrible circus in the SF Bay Area!...
Join Humanity Through Education to protest the terrible circus! Seriously, the circus blows balls (not really, that would be more entertaining and less disgusting than the actual circus) so we must stand up and say HELL NO, CIRCUS. If you love elephants very much, and I KNOW you love elephants very much, then you’ll make your way to one of these events. And seriously, they’re not...

USDA retracts support of Meatless Mondays, is beef...
Man, this is so gross. Even more proof that the governmental agencies put in place to protect us only care about appeasing the big money$$$.
From the USDA Twitter:
You can just imagine how that went down. Like, lower level people at the USDA were all, “sure, Meatless Monday, that’s cool, Americans should eat several fewer pounds of shit-laced meat a day!” and then the beef...

Help save a sweet duck's life!
From the good folks at Harvest Home Sanctuary:
Please extend a warm, fuzzy welcome to Pohono the Injured Duckling. Earlier this week, Pohono survived a nearly fatal hit & run incident in the Eastern San Francisco Bay Area. This brave little bird arrived at our rescue and rehabilitation center in Stockton for special care a few hours ago. He is suffering from a serious leg injury and severe...

The news you need: Rescued piglet is adorable.
Holy crap this piglet is cute! Look at these other pics by photographer Jo-Anne McArthur. They are amazing. I love the ones in the pet carrier, he looks so tiny! This is Sir Edgar Francios. He fell off a truck in Quebec and somebody saved him and now he lives at Snooters Farm Animal Sanctuary in Ontario. Behind him is Pook, a puppymill rescue. Pook! Is that a belly band? OMG POOK! I can’t...

Professor Paws presents Responsible Dog Ownership!
These children, who live in Guangzhou, China, are learning “how to make friends, with Professor Duoduo.” If I knew better, I would identify Professor Duoduo for you, but I like to imagine s/he is not one of the adult women pictured, but the shaggy dog standing between them. More canine tenure!
Responsible Dog Ownership was put on in June by Guangzhou Public Security Bureau got...

Kids win Michelle Obama's Healthy Recipe Contest...
Back in May, Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move organization (initiative?) announced a “Kids’ State Dinner” competition, in which kids from across the country would submit original recipes for consideration by a group of chefs, nutrition writers, the Epicurious editor in chief, and representative of the USDA and the Department of Education.
The contest received over 1,200...

Gut-check: The real paleo diet was mostly plants
Rob Dunn has a guest blog at Scientific American this week that neatly summarizes the problem with all those Paleo Diet enthusiasts: Our actual, paleolithic ancestors ate very similarly to today’s simians, which is to say, mostly plants.
He says that the diets of living primates “are composed of fruits, nuts, leaves, insects, and sometimes the odd snack of a bird or a lizard,”...

Cute Neuaura heels at Compassion Couture!
These are the hotness! They’re the Mulberry from Neuaura and apparently they are exclusive to our friends Compassion Couture. I’m totally in love with black velvet. It’s just the blackest black, right? So much blacker than other materials that pretend to be black. What’s that about? It’s prob some science stuff. That Science, always telling me the secrets of the...

JB's summer vacation: Chicago, cupcakes, beauty,...
Hey everyone! I’ve been on a hiatus, on summer vacay if you will. I went to Chicago, Michigan, and my parent’s house out in the East Bay. All kinds of exciting things happened—I drank rum in the back of a pick-up truck at a wedding in Michigan (a wedding where vegan food was served! The bride loves me), I ate at The Handlebar AND Native Foods (OMG, I so get what the big deal...

Vegan Corner: the ultimate online vegan community!
Say hello to Vegan Corner! It’s “building a nexus between vegans and local business!” It’s basically like a much awesomer Yelp for vegans, so I’m pretty pumped. And guess what! There’s an entry for Vegansaurus! I just looked, and we were already on it! But we have no reviews. Give us reviews! But only good ones because Laura’s a cryer. JK! She’s...

Ethical Ocean's vegan recipe contest
Come one, come all! Ethical Ocean is having a vegan recipe contest and the competition is steep.
So for recipe contests, do you have to make everything to decide which recipe to vote on? I can’t make all this stuff! It would take forever! A delicious, delicious forever. If you just vote for the prettiest, I may have to vote on these pomegranate pops. They are super sexy, right? You can...

Gorilla youngsters foil trap, are awesome
This, my friends, is amazing. According to reports, some juvenile gorillas on a reserve in Rwanda went around dismantling traps set by hunters:
On Tuesday tracker John Ndayambaje spotted a trap very close to the Kuryama gorilla clan. He moved in to deactivate the snare, but a silverback named Vubu grunted, cautioning Ndayambaje to stay away, Vecellio said.
Suddenly two juveniles—Rwema, a...

It’s Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use! Yay!
NPR had a recent important look at the vigorous efforts of the pork and beef lobbies to kill federal hen protection legislation. Amusingly, in the piece, the president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association calls HSUS “the devil.”
Speaking of what the agribusiness groups think, the always-insightful Counting...

I love Gardein chipotle-lime chickn tenders, dipped in a 75-20-5 plain soy yogurt-Mindful Mayo-lemon juice sauce, NO SHAME.
Cord Jefferson did it two years ago at The Awl; Rachel did it two days ago at Autostraddle. Now it’s our turn.
As much as we love to spend hours chopping vegetables and making sauces and pressure-cooking dried beans and rinsing and soaking and rinsing and soaking and...

The Body Shop has limited-edition, cruelty-free...
Two things I love, you guys: cruelty-free makeup, and Lily Cole! As a wide-faced red-haired person, I’ve always wanted to look less Cabbage Patch Kid and more Lily Cole, but genes work in mysterious ways. (They are also why I’m not a supergenius like Megan Rascal.)
The point is, the Body Shop has put out a line of vegan mostly cruely-free makeup, endorsed by Lily Cole, which includes...

Hello, Friends! It's WTF Wednesday with Mark!
You guys, it has been a long couple of weeks. Since I last wrote, I have had two root canals, started summer school, and am about to get two more root canals (I used to have a really bad dentist). I’ve been flossing more, sleeping less, and spent the Fourth of July week (yes, the whole week) in Modesto, which was so incredibly hot and stifling that I did nothing but sit in Allen’s...

For the vegan sports fan, PETA's best veggie food...
I grew up on baseball. My parents took me to my first Baltimore Orioles game when I was two months old. I didn’t realize you couldn’t throw peanut shells on the ground in polite company until I was way too old. And when I became a vegetarian at age 11, one of the few things I missed was ballpark hotdogs (I now shudder at the thought, but kids will be kids).
As a grown-up vegan,...

You heard it! This woman, Oliphant (?!!!) gave her cat Wollie to the shelter when her husband had a stroke. When her husband recovered, Oliphant’s daughter tried to adopt Wollie back, but before she could! Wollie escaped from the shelter and walked the six miles back home! Cray! In three days, no less. I have no idea how you did it, Wollie, but congrats on being reunited with your mama!

Only people in the DC area are getting to enjoy Subway’s new line of meaty vegan sandwiches. I was wishing I had a teleportation machine a couple weeks ago when I had to pay a dollar extra for some measly squeeze-bag avocado on my salad-on-a-bun at a gas station in Pine Junction, CO. Yes, I’d love some Daiya with that whine.
Lucky for Andrea Sachs, she’s in the area, and...

Word on the street is as follows:
Just heard that the newly opened The Way Out Cafe at 3188 Mission at Valencia is doing a Vegan Waffle Party this Sunday.
They opened a few weeks ago and want to have lots of vegan options. Maybe Vegansaurus wants to write about the Waffle Party? I’m guessing there’s a few non vegan toppings, but I’m not sure. The waffles are vegan though!...

And please, nobody make the red dye is from beetles comment. There is plenty of red dye that is not made from bugs. Look it the hell up.

Pretty necklaces for vegans, on sale!
Look what delight came to my inbox today! Pretty necklaces by Design Specimen. I’m not that into the choker but I love the ones on the chains (Update: Design Specimen says they can put any charm on a chain instead of choker (and I’m sure the other way around as well), just ask!). I love all the pendents though. I think it’s because they remind me of my beautiful smushed penny...
