John Barlett has cute shirts for Farm Sanctuary!

image

Lookie what I saw on fb! John Bartlett has teamed up with Farm Sanctuary to create a limited edition “Ambassador Collection.” And I want! If you didn’t know, that’s our fave vegan fashion plate Leanne of Vaute Couture in that pic. Man! Leanne is so lucky! She gets to meet pigs! I NEVER get to meet pigs! My life is the worst.

The notes on the pig shirt say that’s Eric…is that THIS ERIC? He got so big!

At $40, the tees are not cheap. But 10% of the proceeds is going to Farm Sanctuary. I think the chicken one is my fave just for the sexual harassment I would invite. And I’d have to say, “actually it’s HEN not a ROOSTER, dummies!”

Tom's vegan shark shoes are summer-perfect! And benefit shark conservation!

image

Is there anything better than madras plaid shoes? Duh, no. Except maybe for madras plaid shoes that are both vegan and designed and sold to benefit the “protect[ion] of sharks and their environment.” Thanks, Toms!

Per Ecouterre, these shoes were designed in “collaboration with the University of Miami’s R.J. Dunlap Marine Conservation Program” and “inspired by TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie’s shark-diving experience” with that program. Proceeds from the sale of each pair “go to protect sharks and their environment.” They’re not saying what percentage of the proceeds will be donated, or where the money will go, but Toms has been a trustworthy company so far, with its shoes-for-you, shoes-for-a-shoeless-child program (which is still in effect with this style, incidentally), right? So maybe you want a pair! If they had them in my size (stupid men’s sizing) I would have bought them before I even wrote this. Madras is my favorite plaid! And I am crazy about plaid.

Tom’s vegan madras plaid shark shoes, $54 online.

Product Review: Wholesome Chow gluten-free chocolate cake mix!

image

Last weekend, I baked with Wholesome Chow’s chocolate bake mix and that’s it; I’m throwing in the towel on ever making my own mix from scratch again. There’s no point! This Wholesome Chow mix amazing. I can’t even tell it’s gluten-free! Love, love love!

image

As with the last time, I followed the instructions on the back, adding a non-dairy milk and oil. I used full-fat canned coconut milk, which I find gives my cakes and extra degree of moistness and also makes the baking process a little more forgiving. You see, I’m prone to over-baking. It’s a curse! But luckily, coconut milk and I have found each other, so all is well over here.

I don’t have much more to say—this is an exceptional product. I’ve actually bought out every SF store that stocks the chocolate mix. So, there’s that. Actions speak louder than words, and I’ve snatched all the convenience away from you, city-dwellers. But you can buy the mixes online! Then they’ll come straight to your doorstep! Win win! Also, because I bought Rainbow and Other Avenues out, I had the opportunity to try the lavender chocolate mix, which is also very tasty. Much like the vanilla lavender, there is only a hint of lavender flavor, which adds a fruitiness as a opposed to a potpourri-ness.

image

I made my frosting from scratch again, this time adding some instant espresso powder (instant coffee works too) to it. For the border and flowers, which are chocolate frosting, I added unsweetened cocoa powder. You can find my vanilla frosting recipe here!

Paul Shapiro's Animal News You Can Use!

image

It’s that time again, The Humane Society of the United States’ Paul Shapiro brings on the funk with all the animal news you need and more for the week! Get ready to fall in love with with Paul and Stephen Colbert, two animal-loving DREAM BOATS!

Break out the box of tissues…Meat giant Tyson Foods is reporting poor sales due to “very difficult market conditions” resulting from decreased demand for meat.

There’s a new Pork mag editorial on HSUS’s campaign against gestation crate confinement in which they call HSUS “the mastermind behind this and many other challenges against animal agriculture.” They further note that “HSUS [is] methodically chipping away at an animal production sector, and it has the manpower and money to wait it out.” (Pork mag also has an article on a new online HSUS campaign.)

Finally, HSUS has been helping many schools and hospitals implement Meatless Monday programs, including Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Oregon, which The Oregonian reported on this week. And BTW, did you know the founder of “Meatopia” (I’d never even heard of it!) is now backing Meatless Monday? See his TIME piece on it. Crazy.

Video of the week: This week’s video is seriously so funny I literally cried while watching it. It’s Colbert’s segment on the dispute between HSUS and Iowa Rep. Steve King over his pro-cruelty stances. It’ll make your day—guaranteed.

Learning to live and love and eat hella delicious raw food in San Francisco (without Cafe Gratitude)

image

That’s what I wrote about over at The Bold Italic today! You should read it and then make me some Key Lime Pie! And by you, I mean Jenny Bradley, who used to work there and make KLP for a living, LUCKY GIRL. Lucky, that is, except for all the shady-ass shit the Cafe Gratitude employers were pulling, more of which seems to come out daily, of which I report on in a very shady manner. What can I say? I love to gossip and nobody every accused me of being a journalist lolz. Fair and impartial has no place on the internet and the sooner we all learn that and everyone just starts publishing websites that consist entirely of Top 10 lists (e.g. fat people’s 15 favorite foods, Phyllis Diller’s top 20 sexcapades, Best 16 reasons to end it all today, etc.) then the sooner we can all move into the future, burning cities and all.

Anyway, please read and enjoy!!

Picnic Bakery, a new vegan bakery, coming to Haight Street!

image

This is Emily Haydel of Picnic Bakery, a new all-vegan bakery that set to open in the Second Act Marketplace sometime this year. Hopefully tomorrow, but with how fast food-related shiz moves in S.F., it’ll probably be 2112, YA DIG? But let’s keep our hopes but because it’ll be inside the old Red Vic. How wonderful is that!? A: VERY WONDERFUL. Yes, it was very sad when the Red Vic closed, but it is very happy that a vegan bakery, along with 4-6 other food-related start-ups, will be growing in its place! Woohoo!

Picnic Bakery is run by owner/baker Emily here, who currently offers catering and delivery orders. DO NOT WORRY, YOUNG VEGANSAURS: We will get our greedy little fat hands on her tasty treats and report back on their deliciousness shortly, WE WILL NOT FAIL YOU.

For now, Picnic Bakery’s website is still under construction, but you can check out its Facebook page for happenings and follow its tasty-recipe-having and adorably adorable blog!

Now, let’s stare at some tasty treats from Picnic Bakery’s blog (recipes included! Those of you who know how to turn on a stove are so lucky!)

Guest contest: Donate to win a beautiful portrait of a farm sanctuary animal!

image

Sharon Lee Hart is the author of the photography collection Sanctuary: Portraits of Rescued Farm Animals, and a participant in this year’s Farm Sanctuary Walk for Farm Animals, for which she’s asking for your help fundraising. If you help, you could win a 16-by-16-inch photograph of your choice from Sharon’s book. Take a look—they’re beautiful!

Sharon says it’s as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. Donate $10 or more to support me in the Walk for Farm Animals; 100 percent of the funds raised go to Farm Sanctuary. Make sure you include your email address so I can contact you if you win.
  2. Wait: I will chose one winner at random from those that donate between today and Sept. 30. I will contact the winner no later than Oct. 5 and ask them to select the photograph they would like from my website.
  3. I will print your chosen photograph with the finest archival materials, expertly package it up, and ship it off to you in a timely manner.

Want to know more about the book? Sharon can tell you all about it!

This first monograph by Lexington–based photographer Sharon Lee Hart is a book of dignified black-and-white portraits of rescued farm animals, accompanied by handwritten stories by sanctuary workers. A long term vegetarian turned vegan, Hart considers farm animals “some of the most abused, overlooked animals on the planet.”

For this project, she traveled to sanctuaries in Virginia, Florida, Maryland, Michigan and New York State to document “the lucky few who are free to live out their lives in peace.” Not surprisingly, after spending time with the animals she discovered that each had its unique personality. “Some are quirky or funny, while others sensitive, shy, playful, intelligent, mischievous, or inquisitive. And all seemed to have complex emotional lives.”

These characteristics come through in Hart’s poignant photographs. Essays are by Karen Davis, president of United Poultry Concerns; Kathy Stevens, founder of the Catskill Animal Sanctuary; and Gene Baur, founder of Farm Sanctuary.

So donate some money and try to win a photo! Megan Rascal loves this photo of Dee Dee the donkey, of Star Gazing Farm; I’m partial to this portrait of SASHA Farm’s Rainy. I love a shaggy horse!

image

Check out all the photos in Sharon’s book! Best of luck to Sharon and all the participants in the Walk for Farm Animals, and everyone who donates to win a portrait.

Rawxies: Heart-shaped raw vegan deliciousness!

image

Rawxies (“foxy raw treats,” according to the company’s website) are gloriously delicious heart-shaped raw food bars sweetened only with fruit and coconut palm sugar. Coconut palm sugar has recently gained favor in various raw food circles, and reportedly has less of an effect on blood sugar than agave or cane sugar. Either way, it’s totally delicious, and so are these lovely raw cookie bars! Rawxies sent me some samples of each of their flavors.

Rawxies founder Callie England parlayed her raw food interest with her graphic design prowess to make healthful treats that are so effing adorable they will be guaranteed to impress your date/friend/gym partner with whom you share one of the two heart bars found in each colorful serving pack.

image

Combined with high-quality organic raw ingredients like poppyseed, almonds cacao powder, cacao nibs, vanilla rains, walnuts, and other delicious add-ins, and sweetened with dates and/or coconut palm sugar with tasty oat groats, these bars really are a cut above many other vegan snacks on the market.

Using coconut palm sugar essentially guarantees you’ll have the low-glycemic-loving raw crowd on your side, and abbreviating “essential oil” to “E.O.” on the package of the mint chocolate chip Rawxies made me feel I’m in a special raw vegan club that has shorthand only cool kids know—except now everyone who reads Vegansaurus knows (in case you didn’t already suss that one out!), so I guess all of us are in a special club, and can eat Rawxies with the knowledge of all of its ingredients, together!

image

Callie created Rawxies to bring foxy raw food to the masses. Their shape reminds me of  the vegan Heart Thrive energy bars that undoubtedly got me through my varsity collegiate cross-country seasons (they were sold through Vassar’s meal plan!). I  think that these treats are in keeping with Stephen James Organics’ bars in that they emphasize the fun, flirty appeal of raw food, though I guess a lot of folks feel the need to fight the “raw foodists eat twigs” stereotype! I’ve never worried about being accused of consuming twigs, since I admit to my propensity to down twig tea with abandon, but regardless of whether it’s essential to create raw food products that combat any crunchy public image, I think it’s great that so many people are making raw food more accessible and delicious!

Get Rawxies online and at various health food stores.

Guest post: Vegans in spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!

Last month, we learned that yet another governmental agency turned its back on initiatives encouraging healthy behaviors. This week, NASA’S Curiosity rover successfully landed on Mars. We could spend all day talking about how the government has screwed us. Instead, let’s talk about space.

Even though the President’s budget detailed cuts to NASA, there’s still a lot of experimental preparation going on in hopes that missions to Mars will happen—eventually. It’s no secret that NASA’s been lusting to set foot on Mars for decades. We’ve even had some successful robotic missions dating back to the 1960s! NASA scientists are excited about Mars, not only because it would be rad, but also because most of the scientific advancements that have been made in relation to future Mars missions are also relative to us here on Earth.

If we were to successfully gain funding and launch a manned mission to Mars, the journey to get to the “extreme planet,” as some call it, due to its harsh environment, would take approximately six months (compare to the three days it takes to get to the moon). NASA expects the initial manned missions to last a year and a half, not counting the year it would take to get there and back. The duration of such a lengthy mission is a hurdle that overflows into all other aspects of the mission, making its overall sustainability a big concern.

A big hurdle is food. It’s not all dehydrated ice cream and strawberries (or apple slices with cinnamon, if you’re fancy). Earlier this month, some interviews with Maya Cooper, a senior research scientist at Lockheed Martin, leaked some interesting information about the experimental menu planning for longer duration missions in the future. Excitingly enough, most of their menu items lack dairy and meat!

[Can’t see the video? Watch it on Vegansaurus.com!]

Many subsequent articles came out reporting that all the Mars mission food items would be vegan, but the initial interview, which detailed examples of breakfast, lunch and dinner options, included the following items that may not be entirely vegan: pancakes, spiced caramel coffee cake, lemon cake, spinach bread, soup, and peanut butter cookies. Also, Cooper states that scrambled eggs will possibly be a menu option.

Aside from how rad it is that vegan meals are becoming the easiest option to send to space, I’d also like to point out that our NASA base here in California (NASA Ames Research Center) is an incredibly vegetarian- and vegan-friendly place! There’s a café that has at least one vegan option every day. The cafeteria staff have never rolled their eyes at me when I ask if the bread they offer for sandwiches is vegan. They even sell California Suncakes and Heart Thrive cakes in the café!

The next time someone questions the vegan lifestyle or tries to rain on your vegan parade, just say, “When we’re all living in space, you won’t have a choice but to be vegan!” So there!

Elysse Grossi is a scientist at NASA and the owner of Sweet Cups, based in the East Bay. She grosses people out with her other blog, Under the Microscope. Other than that, she’s kinda boring.

Product Review: Benecos makeup and True Natural self tanner!

image

Hey, pals! Here I am, back with another makeup review. The company this time is Benecos by loveTrueNatural. Not everything is vegan but the line is all natural and never tested on animals. The descriptions clearly state if a product is vegan. Of course, all the stuff I tried is vegan! Adoy.

Yes so they sent me a couple of vegan products to try for free. The first thing I tried is the loose mineral powder. I love this stuff! It comes with it’s own poof so I like to keep it in my purse to powder my nose on occasion. I got it in “light” and it was a little bit too light for me, but still great. It offers a lot of coverage, it’s not a sheer powder.

Next I tried the eyeshadow and eyebrow designer. Here’s me:

image

As you can see, the eyeshadow colors are very light and natural-looking. They go on great and blend well. I think I could have put more color on but I think it’d still be very sheer and natural looking. So if that’s the style you want, this is for you. You’ll have to look elsewhere for something more dramatic. I liked that the brow pencil has it’s own little brush but the pencil wasn’t subtle enough for me. I have pretty dark brows though so I don’t usually use an eyebrow pencil.

I also tried the True Natural self tanner. Self tanner always makes me nervous but this was pretty good. I just had a subtle tan the next day so it wasn’t like some cray orange. I did have some streaking by my feet but I think I applied it unevenly, so just be mindful of that.

All in all, great products! If you want organic makeup for a subtle, natural look, Benecos is for you. And if you’ve been looking to dabble in self tanner, I’d give this a shot. It’s not dramatic but if you don’t want to be a pasty ghost, this will help. That’s all for today!

Guest post: Vegan exploration in the Eternal City of Rome!

image

Organic plate at Cavour 313.

Cheese-laden pizzas and an emphasis on meat-based pasta sauces, with plenty of veal and offal thrown in too? On initial impressions, Rome is any vegan’s nightmare.

When I trundled off on a solo trip to the Eternal City in spring this year, it was my first time as vegan. And lo and behold, it wasn’t nearly as difficult to eat well here as I anticipated.

Let’s start with the bad, and go on to the good.

The bad bit was breakfast. I love my breakfast, I really do. But wherever I stayed, usually the most I was able to eat was some packeted dry toasts, and jam, with maybe a banana or an apple. There were, however, always plenty of cheese, eggs, croissants and other non-vegan things to choose from at breakfast.

image

There were two mornings that I relished, though. This was when I was staying at vegetarian eco-hotel The Beehive for a couple of nights. What a gem this place is. One morning I enjoyed apple cinnamon oatmeal made with soy milk, and another morning I was delighted to be cooked a tofu scramble.

Yes—tofu scramble! In Rome! The Beehive was also the only place that was able to provide me with soy milk to take in my tea (I am English, after all), and the owner said they were due to hire two vegan chefs this year. So they may be able to offer even more to vegans from their cute café now.

Eating at other meal times was mostly fine, as long as I studied menus well and hunted around. It is good to be prepared and have an idea of some places to go to and what to eat or not – but I don’t have to tell you that, do I?

As a rule, you’re fairly safe with the vegetable contorni dishes: eggplants, artichokes, bell peppers, and so forth. They will be cooked in olive oil and you can order several and make a meal from them, with some delicious fresh bread and olives.

You will often see potato croquettes, chickpea salads, hummus, and other vegan-friendly items on menus, too. Gnocchi in tomato sauce is another possibility, as well as the ubiquitous pizza marinara, which is simply pizza base with tomato sauce. Order some vegetables and top it yourself.

Rome does have a few vegetarian and vegan restaurants, and if you’re here for a week, theoretically you could go to one each night (I think).

The best experience for me was Il Margutta. Gourmet vegan cuisine at its finest, where my meat-eating companion also claimed it was the best food she’d eaten during her trip to Italy. It’s not a budget option, by any means, but if you’ve come all the way here on holiday, then treat yourself.

image

Fresh imaginative flavors abound; my vegan antipasti was a delicate combination of tofu-stuffed zuchini flowers deep-fried in a tempura batter, an Asian wok salad topped with pickled ginger, a wild berry salad drizzled with balsamic dressing, and a home-made ketchup, tasting of tomato, and not sugar. Oh vegan heaven.

My other great vegan discovery was Bibliothè, not far from Piazza Venezia. Here, they do a different set lunch menu each day that you can have, and they will take out any vegetarian elements that may be involved. They also have several vegan stand-alone choices, as well as vegan cakes.

And then there was also the originally named Taverna Vegetariana, close to Vatican City. It wasn’t the most inspiring food that I have ever had, but it is cheap, cheerful, and you know what you’re getting. They have color-codes on the dishes to denote whether they are vegan or vegetarian; very handy when you don’t speak Italian.

Though not exclusively veggie, another place I ate at a couple of times was a bar in the cobbled streets of Trastevere. At Art Two, you can buy a drink, and for only 2€, help yourself to the aperitivo buffet, which has several vegan options (eggplant, potato croquettes, salad, etc).

I also had a scrummy vegan meal at an Ethiopian restaurant called Africa (Via Gaeta 26), just north of the main railway station. There were not many vegan options, but this one meal of a selection of foods was filling and delicious, and made all the better by the fact I had to eat with my hands.

There were a number of other eateries that I sadly didn’t manage to experience on this visit, including a vegan restaurant called ReWild Cruelty-Free Club—funny little name, but it does what it says on the tin, which is offer cruelty-free dining as well focus on animal rights events in Rome.

If you’re going to Rome anytime soon, I hope this article has given you some vegan food for thought. One other tip: Watch out for risotto. It may appear vegan, but it almost always contains parmesan, which isn’t even vegetarian.

Andrea Wren is a U.K.-based freelance journalist and has a passion for vegan baking and food blogging. She ditched dieting years ago and loves to create interesting and imaginative dishes that tempt non-vegans as well as vegans. On her blog, you will also find her free ebook, Wot, No Eggs?! Guest recipe: Vegan Taiwanese tomato egg, featuring the Vegg!

image

This recipe involves the Vegg. For my review of the Vegg, please read here.

As a child, my mother used to make a stir-fried tomato egg dish that tastes sweet and juicy at the same time. It is a common Taiwanese home dish. I generally dislike tomatoes in stir-fried dishes, except this one. After getting my hands on the Vegg, I decided to veganized my mother’s Taiwanese tomato egg. Thanks, Mama, but I’m gonna eat that vegan from now on and save the BABY CHICKS!

image

Silly me, my mama and baba in Toronto, Canada.

Ingredients
2 tomatoes, chopped in medium-size pieces or wedges (I prefer pieces, but wedges are better)
3/4 cup warm water (only for Vegg mix)
1 1/2 tsp. sea salt
1 tsp. white pepper
1 1/2 tsp. organic ketchup
1 Tbsp. vegan sugar
8 oz. extra-firm tofu, pressed and drained
4 tsp. Vegg
Sunflower oil
2 green onions, chopped for garnish

Instructions
1. Create your Vegg mix. Mix water, Vegg, and tofu in a high-speed blender for 30 seconds.

2. Heat up a lot of sunflower oil in a saucepan, at high heat. Crumble in the Vegg mix, as you would scrambled eggs.

3. As your Vegg mix starts to brown and dry a bit, add tomatoes. Make sure there’s no visible liquid in the pan. It took about 8 to 10 minutes to get that cooked and firm.

4. In a small bowl, mix salt, pepper, ketchup, and sugar. Pour the sauce over the vegan scrambled egg and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.

5. Garnish with fresh chopped green onions.

This comes with stir-fried oyster mushrooms (leftovers) from the Taiwanese oyster omelette I made earlier that day with some vegetarian oyster mushroom sauce, white pepper and salt.

Paul Shapiro's Animal News You Can Use!

image

It’s Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use! This week, Paul is all about QUESTIONS and ANSWERS. Let’s go!

Concerned about world hunger? So is Oxfam. That’s why the charity is urging meat reduction in a new piece on CNN. Oxfam points out that “the reality is that it takes massive amounts of land, water, fertilizer, oil and other resources to produce meat, significantly more than it requires to grow other nutritious and delicious kinds of food.”

Wouldn’t it be awesome if the US weren’t lagging behind the EU on laying hen protection? Well, now we’re lagging behind Israel too, as the country is now banning the barren battery cage, a move celebrated by Anonymous for Animal Rights (a campaigning group in the holy land).

Remember the crazy quote from the pork industry last week about gestation crates? Well, an industry researcher actually had a relatively progressive column in Feedstuffs this week. She writes about standard practices like gestation crates and un-anesthetized castration: “For anyone, much less an expert in animal well-being, to defend or appear unmoved by such practices must seem at worst, disgraceful, and at best, evidence of the claims that ‘factory farming’ leads to cognitive dissonance and indifference to animals.”

Looking for a bank? Well, the Animal Agriculture Alliance announced that it would no longer do business with Bank of America since BoA has a partnership with HSUS (arguing we’re an “extreme animal rights group”…).

Insider gossip/news: more Cafe Gratitude drama-rama!

An anonymous tipster wrote in with this juicy tidbit of even more fucked-up Cafe Gratitude happenings:

This is more than a tip. It is a fact. Cafe Gratitude stuck the owners of the building in Healdsburg with over a year and a half lease by breaking the lease early on the official five year lease. Cafe Gratitude was profitable in Healdsburg after three and a half years of drilling their employees to increase profits. Every time the employees met the goal for the month, the Engleharts would raise the bar even higher. And the employees kept meeting it, with a final gross daily of $2000 at the time of closure.

The owners of the Healdsburg building did everything they could to build up Cafe Gratitude, even forgoing rent and utilities for an entire year, and after that moving to a very beneficial 5% of gross sales to the Engleharts for another year, and doing much of the buildout for Cafe Gratitude in the beginning despite it being under contract for the Engleharts to pay.

How were the very generous and hard working owners of the building treated? They received nothing in return except a very short notice of closure and the last month rent unpaid. The Engleharts develop a culture of trust and community in order to receive from others. But what do they actually give to their landlords and employees other than their love?

Verrrrrrry interesting. Now, what do you think of all of this? I think it’s bullshit and I’m bummed about how shitty Cafe Gratitude’s weirdo mcbeardo (look for that technical diagnosis in the DSM-VI) owners treated their employees and I sure as shit will miss that key lime pie. Man, I loved that pie. I loved that pie more than I love most/possibly all people. Thank the lord for Rachel’s Cafe Gratitude bereavement plan… although I’ve been way too lazy thus far to make anything because I’m extremely lazy. But seriously, PIE:
