It’s Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use! Yay, Paul! Yay, animals!

How much feces gets into meat destined for American consumers? You may be shocked to hear what slaughter plant inspectors told the Washington Post for the paper’s major exposé this week titled “USDA pilot program fails to stop contaminated meat.”

The meat industry is suing to keep Americans in the dark also about a package of meat’s country of origin. However, this week a federal judge refused to go along with the industry’s demands.

Just how has the meat industry altered chickens to grow unnaturally fast, and what problems does that create? My friend, and Drexel professor, Harish Sethu created an excellent new graphic to demonstrate how these birds have been bred to suffer. And the ASPCA has a new site on the topic, too.

Do you think that farmers love the free market? Think again. The Bloomberg headline this week says it all: “Taxpayers Turn U.S. Farmers Into Fat Cats With Subsidies.”

And some final good news to start your weekend: The San Diego Union Tribune reports on the new, entirely meat-free, menu that K-8 San Diego schools recently implemented in honor of Meatless Mondays!
