It’s Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use!  »

First things first: If you love great food, worthwhile networking, and inspirational people like the dudes from Ester the Wonder Pig, the Taking Action for Animals conference in Washington, DC (June 27-30) is going to be off the hook—and it’s only $75. I hope to see you there!

In other news…

A new analysis shows that over the past 10 years, per capita consumption of red meat and poultry is down nine percent. (We’re eating fewer aquatic animals, too.)

Perhaps part of this has to do with more Americans seeing elite athletes like NFL lineman David Carter touting vegan eating, or congressman like Rep. Tony Cardenas (D-Dalif.) issuing press releases about how he and his staff are now celebrating Meatless Mondays. (Here’s the Humane Society Legislative Fund’s commentary on that.)

Former elected officials are also making difference. This new story focuses on the touching reason Bill Clinton eats a plant-based diet.

Finally, do you know people who think that improving farm animal welfare is always in conflict with good business sense? My coworker Josh Balk schools them this week in the pages of the Christian Science Monitor.

Video of the week: Dogs annoying cats…

Photo of the week: I can’t tell if Calvin likes being in the sun or not.
