You know how, as a vegan, there are certain places you don’t even bother to check out because you already know there’s nothing for you? Like ‘The Meat Hut’ or ‘The Cheese Shack’ or whatever? You might think MilkShake Werks in Redwood Shores is kind of like that, but you’d be making a huge mistake! Because…VEGAN MILKSHAKES! Yay! SIDE NOTE: Actually, you might think all of Redwood Shores is kind of like that. It’s mostly a big tangle of housing developments that sprang up south of Redwood City after Marine World moved away; on first glance not a lot of exciting vegan potential. But again, huge mistake! More on that later.
First, MilkShake Werks and their delicious VEGAN MILKSHAKES! The shop has been there for a while, but we only found out about the vegan shakes recently—surprise! We zoomed over and ordered chocolate-chocolate chip, which was the vegan flavor the owner made that morning. All the ice cream is handmade from scratch (not delivered in bulk by some stinky truck) using plenty of local ingredients. There’s always at least one vegan option, but the available flavors are determined by what got made most recently, so call and check if there’s a flavor you MUST have. Anyway, back to the shakes: we were sooo happy. Haven’t had a “real” milkshake in years and years, and this more than lived up to the memory. It was thick but not TOO thick–-easily drinkable through a straw, no problem. Lots of yummy speckles of dark chocolate throughout. Special bonus: the shakes are served in Greenware cups that are actually made from plants, so no plastic or Styrofoam guilt there.
Once we figured out they had vegan ice cream, I starting nosing around and other possibilities opened up as well. They’ll make vegan ice cream cakes! You can have a regular sized one or a cute little one that serves 4 to 6. Also, the hot fudge isn’t vegan (boo) but the chocolate sauce is, so you can even pig out on vegan banana splits. Nice.
From 4 to 6 p.m. every day is Milkshake Happy Hour-–20 percent off — and they’re always hosting special events like the “Shake It” Milkshake Drinking Contest this Saturday (July 31). The owner says the vegan ice cream has been a hit so far, so keep sending them love!
Now, let’s say that for some reason you consider a milkshake or banana split to be merely dessert? There are tons of meal options in easy walking distance. You could try:
Yeah! Chinese: The menu has a vegan-meat section, subbing in faux pork, beef, fish or chicken in some classic dishes, but that’s just a starting point – they’ll veganize almost anything on the menu. Definitely try the (vegan) sweet-and-sour pork if you’re eating with die-hard meat-eaters and want to fool them. It’s so realistic we freaked out the first time and demanded proof that it was really fake (it is.) Or if faux meat isn’t your thing, they have a big selection of veggie-based main courses also.
Or how about Ike’s Place: Yes, I said Ike’s Place! Almost no one knows about their Redwood Shores location because it’s tucked in an office building and is phone-order only, but no problem–-just call from the parking lot then stroll in for the BEST VEGAN SANDWICHES EVER. (You may have to duck in to grab a copy of their huge menu first.) Just try not to hog all the soy cheese because they sometimes run out, OK? I want some too.
Or Amici’s: Yes, a Redwood Shores location! Their vegan pizza used to be kind of meh, and now is great because they switched to Daiya cheese. And their pizza sauce has no hidden meat–-only tomatoes, basil, garlic and salt–-so you can go ahead and order any pizza you want, just ask for the vegan cheese. Yum yum yum.

We haven’t checked out Chronicle restaurant reviews in a while. Michael Bauer went to Gather, where chef Sean Baker, formerly of Millennium, cooks terrifying vegetarian and vegan food and reassuringly meat-tastic dishes like soups of goat and duck. Thank god, we can all get along! Even if “the staff can be a little strident,” those fucking hippies.
The Healthy Food Financing Initiative has $400 million for grocery stores to open in “food deserts,” i.e., areas where you can only buy food at convenience stores. Hopefully this won’t all go to Wal-Mart. But, yay groceries! Everyone needs groceries, duh.
Hey so sea lions have returned to Pier 39 after a months-long absence. No, we don’t know where they were, why they left, or whether these sea lions are even the same ones who used to chill there. It’s all very mysterious. If only someone could speak sea-roar.
Koalas are catching a species-specific disease called koala retrovirus, which acts upon their systems like AIDS does on humans—i.e., it makes them more susceptible to other illnesses that then become lethal. Because what we need are fewer koalas.

We know he’s made it quite clear he was never a veg chef, and his exact role in this bloodbath is unknown, BUT STILL.

LATE EDIT, UGH: In Defense of Animals and the SF Vegetarian Society are co-hosting a vegan halloween party on Saturday, Oct. 31! Check out A.Muse Gallery at 614 Alabama St. tomorrow from 7 to 11 p.m. for comestibles (Sugar Beat Sweets!), a silent auction, a raffle, a costume contest, and MORE! The entry fee is a sliding scale starting at $7, and all proceeds “go to the animals.” Not sure what that means, exactly, but if you are into costumes and vegans, this sounds like the place to be.
A dude who owns a fish restaurant was caught hell of illegally fishing, and SF Gate commenters are up in ARMS about it. The way they are all “PUT HIM IN THE STOCKS” [sic] and PROSECUTE TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW and shit, it’s as though the fish were their own mothers (they are their murdered dinners).

Back to the terrible: An undercover investigation by the Humane Society resulted in the temporary shut-down of an especially fucked up slaughterhouse in Vermont. The best part is that the plant was for killing veal calves, who were horribly tortured before their painful deaths. AWESOME.
But what’s that you say, Ezra Klein, humane veal? No joke, you guys, especially you vegetarians: “If you consume dairy, you should eat veal.” Because otherwise what happens to the bouncing baby boy calves born of the must-give-birth-to-give-milk dairy cows? The onus is totally on YOU THE CONSUMER who already DOES NOT EAT VEAL, duh. The world is so fucking simple sometimes!! [thanks for the tip, Tessa!]
The International Bird Rescue Research Center needs your help! There’s been a big algal bloom in the Pacific off the Oregon and Washington coasts, and it’s covered thousands of seabirds with “an unusual sea slime.” The effect on the birds is similar to that of an oil spill—it’s really awful. What you can do is give the IBRRC your money, to fund its team and local rescue groups. Save the seabirds!
On Monday, Nov. 2 at noon, Go Vegan radio host Bob Linden and the San Francisco Green Party Animal Advocacy Working Group will lead a “peaceful protest” against KPFA for airing anti-veg propaganda, a.k.a. a bunch of dumb lies. The protest happens outside the KPFA studios at 1929 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Berkeley.
Let’s look at restaurant reviews in the Chronicle! Except, hang on, what’s Michael Bauer written about this week? The SFUSD’s gross-ass lunches! The school offers both milk and chocolate milk, which is federally mandated despite having “high fructose corn syrup listed as the second ingredient and corn syrup as the third.” Dang you guys, that is nasty. Help fix things with the Healthy School Lunches program, OK? Because ALL KIDS deserve good, cruelty-free food, and improving our free, mandatory public education institutions benefits all of us. For real.

News Item: The Inaugural SF Vegan Bakesale!!!
Sort of. There was already the Worldwide Vegan Bakesale last June, and it went so well (read: they made gangbusters money off the hungry people waiting in line at Ike’s) that a consortium of the city’s coolest vegans with the sickest dairy-free baking skillz want to make it a regular thing! Or at least, do it again and see how that goes. It will probably go really well because that’s what generally happens when you have a table full of delicious baked goods.
Of course it’s for a good cause, because vegans can’t just be looking out for number one. (That’s kind of the whole idea right?) So proceeds from the bakesale will go Gimme Shelter Cat Rescue, to save KITTENS ON DEATH ROW holy shit have you no heart??
Check it out Saturday October 17th, one month from today, in front of Ike’s Place (3506 16th Street at oh come on you know where Ike’s is fine it’s Sanchez can’t you go anywhere without Google Maps?), let’s say 11a-4p.
