Court rules to send abused elephant Sunder to sanctuary!  »

This is exciting! Sunder has been chained and abused for years while PETA India has campaigned for his release. Finally, the high court of Bombay ruled in favor of PETA! HUZZAH!

ONE PROBLEM. Sunder was supposed to be freed in 2012:

The Jyotiba temple came into possession of Sunder in 2007, but after constant chaining and beatings came to light, Maharashtra Minister of Forests Dr Patangrao Kadam and the Project Elephant division of the Ministry of Environment and Forests issued orders for Sunder’s release to a sanctuary on 21 August 2012 and 9 November 2012, respectively. However, those orders were never carried out, and Sunder was then spirited away at the behest of Kore and hidden in an old poultry shed, where he remained in chains. In December 2013, PETA obtained video footage showing that his mahout was violently beating him, and veterinarians and elephant experts who examined Sunder found him scarred, wounded and chained so tightly that he couldn’t lie down.

It wasn’t a ruling by the high court so maybe it’s different this time. Regardless, I’m happy that the government of India is on Sunder’s side! And let’s all hope to the highest hope that this time Sunder gets his sanctuary! My heart goes out to you, sweet ele!

I’m not sure if there’s an easy way to donate to the sanctuary Sunder is supposed to go to, but here is some info on that. You can donate to PETA India here

Della: vegan, socially responsible accessories and tech cases!  »

Della is a socially responsible fashion line that provides jobs, education and skills training to women and men of Hohoe, Ghana. So the company sounds pretty amazing, but the bags also look super cute! And I just so happen to need a little sleeve for my bitty work computer! AND 30% of all sales for THIS WEEK are being donated to PETA! It’s DESTINY. So I bought this cute vintage coral one. I’m in love.

No really, this is just what I was looking for. I have a giant bag with a big open interior. So far, I just shove my work macbook in when I need to bring it home but I’m always like, “this seems like the worst idea ever.” Well, never no more! I now have a perfect responsibly-made macbook sleeve to protect it.

And as I was saying, the company looks really awesome. It was started by an LA designer and an entrepreneur in Ghana as a way to help the women of the Hohoe community. The women who make the Della products not only make a fair wage, they also take classes in literacy and finance. You can read all about it on their site. Here’s a little peek inside the company:

If you are looking for a cute bag, laptop case, headband, or THIS FREAKING AWESOME POCKET SQUARE, check out Della! And if you want to support PETA, this is the week to shop!

Five Feel-Good Stories Prove That Everyday Heroes Are Everywhere  »

This feel-good message is brought to you by PETA blog writer, Chrissy Matthies

I’m the first to admit that even though PETA saves animals every day, I sometimes falter under the weight of knowing that I can’t end dog chaining, factory farming, and bullfighting right now. But then I hear that a firefighter saved a kitten’s life with a little oxygen—and, let’s face it, a whole lot of sexiness—and my faith that one person can make a difference is restored. Add a school that serves kids vegetarian lunches and a businessperson who leads a group of ducklings safely to a lake, and I feel like I’ve hit the faith-in-humanity jackpot.

Here are five other everyday heroes who made it their business to make a big difference in the lives of animals:

  • Andi Davis carried an injured 47-pound dog half a mile down a steep mountainside after spotting him during her morning hike. She rushed him to an animal hospital, where he was treated for gunshot-related injuries. Doggie Elijah has recovered nicely and now lives with Davis and her family.
  • After responding to a fire at a California apartment building, members of the Santa Monica Fire Department found an unconscious dog hidden behind a mattress in one of the units. The firefighters rushed the dog, named Stella, from the burning building and immediately began giving her oxygen using a mask specially designed for dogs and cats. Stella soon regained consciousness and was taken to an animal hospital to recover. I’m sure the firefighters got a few doggie smooches for their efforts!
  • After Cristina Fernandez spotted a Lobster Zone “game” at a restaurant, she persuaded the owner to get rid of the cruel tank, which allows customers to use a mechanical claw to terrorize and capture the lobsters they want the kitchen to boil alive. Lobster Zone tanks are hideous—the claw can injure lobsters who are already tormented by not being fed while awaiting their deaths. Christina proved that no animal is too small—or antennae-y—to fight for.
  • Ginger Frey contacted PETA after she spotted ducklings who were trapped in a storm drain in Lombard, Illinois. Although she had managed to get two of the birds out on her own, the others were too far down for her to reach, so PETA contacted the Lombard Fire Department, which came to the rescue. Firefighters were able to reach the remaining two ducklings, and all of them were taken to a wildlife rehabilitator.
  • TatorTot proves that animals can be everyday heroes, too! Christi Smith had just adopted the pit bull when he started whining and barking and running between her and her 4-year-old son, Peyton. When Smith checked on Peyton, she found that he was barely breathing, so she rushed him to the emergency room, where doctors determined that his blood sugar had dropped to dangerously low levels. Because of dogs’ keen sense of smell, TatorTot had probably detected the presence of ketones, which are associated with low blood sugar. He was rewarded with hugs from his mom and a thank-you goody basket from PETA.

TatorTot isn’t the only one to receive a PETA award! Although the aforementioned human heroes didn’t get dog biscuits, they received special recognition from PETA for donning their capes and helped animals in need.

PETA continues its quest to be the weirdest pro-vegan organization on earth—not that there’s a lot of competition, but definitely it’s steep—with PETA Europe’s sexxxxy sexxxxxxxy animals-doin-it video promoting the “bigger sexual appetite” of us vegans.

Maybe it’s spring and all the pigeons out are strutting for each other, but I’m not in immediate hate with this thing. What do you guys think? Puerile and great, or just puerile?

Hey, Davey Havok, how’ve you been? Looking much sharper than 15 years ago when my brother first started playing your EPs, I must say. Nice to see you’re still living the vegan lifestyle!

Usually we don’t post every one of the 80 billion celebrity Peta ads because most celebrity Peta ads are fameballs looking to build their brand by taking off their clothes (like they’d ever spend money on a fur that they could spend on new glamour shots at a pumpkin patch, ahem), but little Davey Havok here has been vegan (and straightedge) for a long time, and he’s got a vegan clothing line called Zu Boutique whose website redirects to the site for his new book, Pop Kids, which you could win a copy of through peta2. The point is, he lives his truth or whatever, and I feel like we’d be doing the Vegansaurus readership a disservice not posting video of a handsome vegan man with a cat, so, here you go. Vegans 4ever.

Silly animal-friendly April Fools Day jokes  »

I kind of hate April Fools Day. Some stuff is fun, like when Google or whatever plans something elaborate. But I hate when you are working on a deadline and you get “zany” “emergency” emails and it’s like, OK, can you just tell me if this is real or not so I can get back to work? Yes. I’m a ball of fun. But! I have to admit, some of these animal-centered April Fools are funny. Come on, admit it.

Up top is an ad from ASPCA about their new anti-puppymill campaign. It’s pretty dang cute. Corresponding video:

Don’t worry, cats can join in on the protest as well.

Ug, I hate stores that sell dogs! Monster Pets in Philly does and I hate them. Boycott them! But a lot of pet stores are hip to adoption and don’t sell pups and kitties. If only we could get them to stop selling hamsters and those other little guys! But pups and kitties is a start.

Vegan-friendly online store Ethical Ocean made a pretty funny site, Unethical Ocean. You get where it’s going but this basketball net offer is just really funny:

It’s all in the details! Like in the FAQ for Warby Parker’s new line Warby Barker

Can my dog ride in the car with his head out the window while wearing Warby Barker glasses?

Yes. Each pair is constructed from exceptionally durable materials.

Not an animal org, I know, but this silly page links to HSUS. And besides, DOG-OCLE

Other jokes: PETA said they’d release meat-allergy-inducing ticks, Sony had a cute thing, Grubhub’s Kibblehub is kind of hilar, and Care2 had a petition from a cow asking for more visibility on the site.

In crappy April Fools attemps, Whole Foods disappoints with a joke about a cam that promises to let you “watch what your meat eats,” because all animals are “your meat” and isn’t that funny. Um, fuck you. And it appears even the Army has a sense of humor? Too bad they do actually send dogs off to get PTSD or die (the Army may have a sense of humor, but I still don’t!). And wait, is this Ostrich pillow from Fab real? Ug, I hate April Fools Day.

PETA President Bound and ‘Force-Fed’ During Protest  »

Copyright PETA.

Hi everybody, did you hear about this recent PETA UK demo? I’m interested in what you think about it. Details:

PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk caused enough of a scene outside British retailer Fortnum & Mason to make Britons drop their brollies in a colourful protest for PETA UK.

Showing what geese on Fortnum & Mason’s foie gras farms endure, a man bound Ingrid with ropes and pretended to shove a pipe down her throat. The pipe was attached to a funnel packed with grain, and fake blood oozed down her face to represent the mouth and neck wounds that geese sustain when they are gouged by the pipes.

In order to fully replicate how foie gras is produced, Ingrid would have had to be force-fed several times a day for weeks, until her liver had swelled to up to 10 times its normal size, when it would then be sold as a “delicacy.”

Until Fortnum & Mason stops the goose abuse, PETA UK vows not to stop the grotesque protests.

I’m late getting this up but better late than etc. You know JP is my main squeeze so I support everything he does with his fine self. I don’t find this video that moving for some reason though. I don’t know why. Maybe just because I know he’s not really drowning or anything. Thoughts?

PETA has a new fur exposé video narrated by Olivia Munn. It gets the Graphic As Fuck rating. I couldn’t watch the whole thing. I can’t make it through any fur video actually since that Earthlings trailer. SHUDDER.

You can go to PETA for more info.

Maggie Q poses for PETA, talks serious veg business  »

imageQuoth Ms. Maggie Q in the Huffington Post:

There’s no way to look at the meat industry today and say, “There’s no environmental impact.” Animals grown for food pollute our air, our soil, our water, our streams, our oceans. And these are United Nations statistics; these are not statistics from PETA or animal rights groups. The United Nations four or five years ago put out a study that said the meat industry, meat-eating, growing meat for food is the No. 1 killer of our planet—not No. 2 or No. 3: No 1. You know what’s No. 2? Transportation. Everyone thinks that No. 1 is transportation, and goes out and buys a hybrid car. Screw the hybrid cars. Don’t eat hamburgers. If you don’t eat a hamburger, your carbon footprint is so much less than driving a hybrid car, I can’t even tell you.

She doesn’t call herself vegan, but she doesn’t talk like she consumes any animal products, and she loves VegNews (all the good people love VegNews, duh), and this interview she gave to HuffPo following her new PETA ad is pretty great. Vegansaurus doesn’t have a lot of love for PETA [Except Megan! -Megan], but we do appreciate a smart, ridiculously beautiful woman advocating a veg diet using feelings and dispassionate facts. You win this round, Maggie Q and your international torso.
