THIS PIGLET IS TOO CUTE! You can skip to :30, that’s the best part. It’s so adorable.
I can’t wait until I get a piglet! I’m going to love her or him sooooo much. But until we all get our own piglets, we can support the lil’ guys at Animal Place!
1,800 Hens Need Homes in Northern California! You Can Help! »
Animal Place is trying to save a whopping 1,800 hens! But they need homes ASAP! From Animal Place:
Animal Place is ready to spring into action and save 1,800 hens from an egg farm going out of business! We have until April 4th to find as many homes as possible. To do that we need YOUR help!
This rescue is different than others. Because of staff limitations, we can only rescue as many hens as we can place into pre-approved adoptive homes. We have three opportunities to save hens – Friday March 21st, Friday March 28th, and our last date Friday, April 4th. Over those weekends, we’ll host adoption events for approved adopters.
The hens are 8-12 mos-old red girls. Sassy, sweet, and inquisitive, they are great additions to anyone’s flock!
If you can adopt, that would be so awesome and you’d get a new chicken friend!!! If you can’t adopt, please share share share until all the hens have homes!
Last week, Animal Place rescued 3,000 hens from an egg-laying farm in California. Another victory for this amazing organization! Remember the massive rescue of the Turlock hens? Animal Place does really wonderful work.
Here’s how they explain this most recent operation:
The farm, which will remain confidential, reached out to us after receiving a packet of information on our Rescue Ranch program…which asks egg farmers to relinquish custody of hens instead of sending them to slaughter. To date, this is the largest farm that has agreed to release birds to our sanctuary.
If you want to help Animal Place out, they could certainly use it. Donate here!
Animal Place turns 24! Let’s party! »
To celebrate its 24th year of hard work as an animal rescue group and beautiful sanctuary, our beloved Animal Place is having a party, and we’re all invited!
Lucy cordially invites you to our 24th birthday party—our Pig-Out BBQ Birthday Bash. While you may celebrate all the animals, Lucy wants to celebrate food with you the most. Bring a watermelon or cantaloupe: At 2 p.m., we’ll let you give them to the big pigs! Be welcomed with some bluegrass music by local band the Fruit Jar Pickers, and enjoy vegan hot dogs from Field Roast and burgers from Amy’s kitchen. Cupcakes will be available as well—because what’s a birthday party without cake!
When: Saturday, July 6
Time: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (food served 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.)
Barns are open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Tickets are $15 per person, and include a vegan hot dog or burger!
You can arrive any time, but if you want to hear a birthday speech from Executive Director Kim Sturla and enjoy feeding the pigs some watermelons and cantaloupes, then be sure to stop by the pig barn at 2!
Pre-registration is required. Open to all ages—a great event for the family!

February marked the first anniversary of the Turlock rescue, “”the largest farmed animal rescue in California history.” Of 50,000 hens who were abandoned to starve for two weeks, 4,460 were saved, and Animal Place brought in 4,100.
This is Turlock the Documentary, and tells the story of the hens and their rescuers. Want to support the hens? Donate to Animal Place—they do truly wonderful work.
Two rescued calves meet, become BFF »
I mentioned cute rescue calf Stanley from Animal Place recently. At that time, he was sickly and couldn’t hang out with any other cows. BUT he just met his new BFF Theo and it’s the cutest! The two will be roomies until they are big enough to join the grown up cows. An illustrated diary of their meeting:
Animal Place is having a Cinnaholic giveaway! »
"Cinnamon Toast Crunch" Roll
I pretty much covered it in the headline but yes, Animal Place is giving away TWO Cinnaholic gift certificates! As it says, you don’t have to be in the Bay Area but it’s just for US residents. A couple years ago I ordered a bunch of their rolls to Philadelphia and I can confirm they travel well and are ridiculously good!
Vegan sweets-lovers, go enter!
Help Animal Place while you shop! »
The wonderful people at Animal Place have found a new way for you to support their work: The SHARES Card. SHARES stands for Supporting Humanities, Arts, Recreation, Education and Sports. They raise millions a year for various charities and now Animal Place is on board!
Get a card for FREE and every time you swipe it at Save Mart, S-Mart, FoodMaxx, or Lucky Supermarkets, a portion of your purchase goes to Animal Place. It’s available in California and northern Nevada (that’s where the stores are located). You can get a card by signing up here: http://animalplace.org/shares-card
In other news, meet Stanley! A recent Animal Place rescue and my new crush. Look, he’s trying to make an angry face! I know you ain’t angry, Stanley! Silly baby.
“Newest bovine rescue at Animal Place - Stanley! His likes include nomming on grass like he’s a big cow, chasing his shadow, bottle-time, and gentle chin skritches. He looks forward to meeting big brother Theo in the coming months!”
S.F. Bay Area (and nearby-ish!) events, starting tomorrow! Go do things! »
Events! We got ‘em! No time to dilly dally, let’s dive into the fray and get this party started and mix more metaphors and be grammatically insane forever!
Wednesday, Sept. 19 (that’s tomorrow! It might be too late for this one but you should try to get in anyway and then find out if they’ll be having more upcoming events and then email me about them and do my job for me thanks!)
A mind-blowing all-vegan three-course dinner prepared by the lovely and talented Ashley of Barefoot and in the Kitchen (the AWESOME new vegan cookbook!) and Fat Bottom Bakery fame. The meal will come from recipes in the cookbook so you can taste for yourself how delicious it is. And then buy several copies and give them as holiday gifts to me and others you care about less than me. It’s 6 to 8 p.m. at University Press Books (2430 Bancroft Way, Berkeley) and costs $25. It’s RSVP-only, seating is limited. For students and starving artists, there’s a discounted rate. Awww. For reservations and questions, email them!
A fundraiser for Farm Sanctuary’s Walk for Farm Animals at Saturn Cafe in Berkeley! Starts at 6pm, info and tickets here. Apparently a vegan feast is involved so if you can’t get into Ashley’s event, this could be a great second choice. Or a first choice. Do what you want, it’s your life!!
Saturday, Sept. 22
Music in the Meadow at Animal Place in Grass Valley! It’s a drive but it’s also beauuuutiful! And there will be pigs to play with! And OCD Sweets to consume! And John Robbins to harass! You can always stay in this awesome Airbnb house and enjoy not using your asthma inhaler because the air is too damn clean and gorge yourself on caramels and cuddle pigs until you just can’t take it anymore and you have to head home to the dirty, caramel-less, pig-less, terrible Bay Area. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., pre-order your tickets and get a goody bag filled with treats! Goody bags are where it’s at.
B12: Bomb Vegan Brunch. We went last time, it was hella good, definitely go eat everything. 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bissap Baobab (3372 19th St. between Capp and Mission, S.F.) Also on Sunday!
Sunday, Sept. 23
Millennium is having a nightshades and bloody mary cooking class! Girrrrrl, that sounds TASTY. If there are two things I love, it’s mushrooms and alcohol. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (with an option to join Eric Tucker at the Ferry Building Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 to 11 a.m.). Normally $150 but it’s $125 if you say you’re with Vegansaurus! The pink dino’s got the HOOK UP, Y’ALL. (Sometimes, mainly he just needs to borrow some cash.) (can I borrow some cash?) Call the lovely Alison at (415) 345-3900, ext. 13 to book. Learn how to cook from a true master and eat an amazing meal and drink bloody marys on Sunday, which was what god intended when he/she/it/them created the universe and everything in it. Also, I am probably going to this so come just to hang out with me because I’m a LAUGH A MINUTE (read: I will glare at you from a darkened corner) (sexily).
Farm Sanctuary’s Compassionate Communities campaign is leafletting and needs your help! The day starts with a light lunch (FREE FOOD!) and workshop on effective animal advocacy (very educational! We should all go to this and become better at doing what we do so the animal army doesn’t eventually rise up and eat us!) (We’ll have deserved it) before hitting the streets to leaflet at Market and Powell. Meet at 1 p.m. at 371 10th St. (the S.F. office of Beyond Eggs/Hampton Creek Foods).
B12: Bomb Vegan Brunch. We went last time, it was hella good, definitely go eat everything. 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Bissap Baobab (3372 19th St. between Capp and Mission, S.F.) Also on Saturday!
Monday, Sept. 24
More Farm Sanctuary veg leafletting, this time at U.C. Berkeley. Meet at Sather Gate (enter campus from Telegraph Avenue and Bancroft Street; walk north through campus along Sather Road, which is a pedestrian walkway, about one block until you reach Sather Gate) from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
And you can leaflet on Market Street (meet on the walkway between the corner of Market and Steuart street and the entrance to the Ferry Building Marketplace) from 4 to 6 p.m. Email firstname.lastname@example.org or call (484) 904-6004 if you have questions about any of the Farm Sanctuary events.
I think that’s it on the events front for this week—or maybe I’m missing something!? What am I missing?? Underwear! That’s it! You’re welcome!
Ruby from Animal Place just celebrated her 2nd birthday! Go Ruby! I love Ruby because we are both so into calypso. Though now that I think of it, she didn’t say a damn thing to me on my birthday this year. Whatevs, I’m not holding a grudge! You eat those cupcakes, girl!
