Who wants a cookbook? You do! You especially want Joni Marie Newman’s and Celine Steen’s Hearty Vegan Meals for Monster Appetites, because it’s fantastic! Every recipe is crazy-delicious-looking, and adorable and filled with cuteness and personality, à la Celine and Joni! We love love love these two ladies, and we know you’ll love their enormous, amazing cookbook.

Update: Contest is closed! Congratulations to Susan! Thanks for entering, everyone, your comments made me super-hungry!
Design the next Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale shirt! »
The very first WWVBS shirt, designed by Herbivore, sold out ages ago (because they’re so so cute), and the organizers want to print a new one. Of course they do, shirts are the best.
This time, they’re holding a contest for the new design, and you should enter! We know you’re all right-brained, left-handed creative geniuses, so put those brains to work! The contest ends on Feb. 19, giving you a little over five weeks to come up with a brilliant shirt encompassing the ideals of the WWVBS and veganism and also being super-adorable and wearable and you know what, get the details on the site. They have specific guidelines, including the design needing to look good on the organic cotton tees, which look like this:
Good luck, geniuses! I am 100 percent positive you can do better than this!
Enter Tofurky’s design contest! Win cash, prizes, and donations! »
Hello fancy artists, regular artists, and artistic types! Tofurky wants to make a new t-shirt, and they want you to design their new t-shirt. Which is good, because have you seen their current shirts? Not as hot as ours, golly. They need help!
If you win, you’ll get fabulous prizes, including $200 cash, a $100 donation in your name to the animal/environmental nonprofit of your choice, “two merchandise items (style to be determined) featuring your design,” and a total of 42 “VIP coupons” for Tofurky products. Plus fame!
Now get cracking! You’ve only got a little over three weeks to thrill Tofurky with your genius!
Here’s Laura’s stab at it. Double genius!
Hmm… perhaps the Tofurky should be further down? And spelled correctly? Actually, the whole thing is terrible, you can do much better. Fly, little tofurkies, fly!

Vegansaurus! Let’s win the Denver Avocado Takedown* together! I JUST heard about this amateur cook-off and I’m so psyched to win, and I know with your help I can do it! Let’s win one for the vegans!
SEND ME YOUR BEST [NON-GUAC] AVOCADO RECIPE ASAP! I made a whole email address so you can tell I’m SERIOUS.
Here’s what’s up: On Sunday, Nov. 6, Denver-area cooks will be fighting to the death for the best non-guacamole avocado recipe. Each cook gets a free case of avocados to make a massive batch of awesome sauce, and then people who buy tickets sample the stuff and help judge, and then the winner gets some kind of prize (who even cares, I dig glory and bragging rights for shizzo).
I’m a good cook! I can even do quantity! But I need a killer avo recipe—that’s where you come in! Send me your best and tell me why it’s awesome. I will give you and the whole Vegansaurus community major props in all that I do. And if we win, it will be a victory for vegan food everywhere!
Let’s do this, Vegansaurs!!!
*”America’s Most Important Food Competition,” meaning, this matters!!
CONTEST CLOSED: Win tickets to a Bay Area screening of Vegucated! »
Thanks for participating, everyone! And congratulations to the winners!
I keep thinking I have a short attention span, but I love to read, so maybe it’s a problem with audio-visual stimuli: I have a really hard time watching an entire movie. I pause it so often it takes me three days to finish, or I’ll keep it on and do a bunch of educational quizzes on Sporcle (Always Be Self-Improving), or I’ll put it on as background while I cook or clean—I am bad at watching movies.
A movie that did keep my attention for its entire run was Vegucated, the documentary about three omnivores who adopt a vegan diet for six weeks. It’s only about 90 minutes, but it’s well made and totally compelling. Despite not being its target audience—I don’t need like 10 minutes of animal-abuse footage and slaughterhouse stats to convince me my lifestyle choices are morally correct—I watched the entire thing without getting wiggly or checking my phone-clock once.
Vegucated documents an interesting experiment in an entertaining way, the director/editor/writer/narrator, Marisa Miller Wolfson, is smart and funny, and she chose her subjects well. They’re totally sympathetic: You cheer when they succeed; you feel bad when they cry. I absolutely recommend Vegucated. Go see it! With your friends! And family! And everyone you know who isn’t vegan, because duh they should be and Vegucated can help get them there!
Specifically, you in the Bay Area have two chances to see it, on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at the David Brower Center in Berkeley, and on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at the Victoria Theater in San Francisco. Buy tickets for the Berkeley screening here, and for the S.F. screening here. Best part: You can win tickets for either event, thanks to our pal and event producer Karine Brighten! Isn’t she great? Thanks, Karine!
We are giving away one pair and two single tickets to the SF event, and two single tickets to the Berkeley event. To win, leave a comment with two pieces of information: 1. Which screening you’d like to attend (“Berkeley” or “San Francisco”); and 2. Recommend me a movie that isn’t totally boring! I will pick winners by Friday, Oct. 14. This should give all you non-winners plenty of time to buy your way in.
You want to see this movie! So come on and enter the contest, already.

Holy cannoli, try not to die! How anyone buys a bunny from a pet store when there are guys like this up for adoption, I’ll never know. Ridiculous.
