Save the wolves! Keep them protected!  »

This whole budget business is messy as my room. All these goddamn riders! One such rider is the de-listing of wolves as an endangered species in Idaho and Montana. This is utter bullshit and really sad. From Earthjustice via the LA Times: “For the first time in history, Congress is removing a species…from the Endangered Species Act based on political, rather than biological, judgments.” Like I explained last week, wolves are being attacked for eating livestock and competing for “game” with hunters.

I don’t really sympathize with livestock farmers but that’s a better reason than that of the hunters; at least it’s like about their livelihood (as animal abusers). It’s like I’m sorry the wolves are making it more difficult for you guys to hunt but isn’t that part of the point? If you want easy, go to the damn grocery store. De-listing an endangered species so you have an easier time hunting is just depraved thinking and sneaking it into the budget agreement is so slimy.

From Friends of Animals, here’s how you can help:

Listed below are the phone numbers and contact info for the Senate. Please call not only your own senators, but every Senate Democrat as many times as you can. Please also pass this information along to other animal advocates. Wolves need every voice possible.

Capital Switchboard Numbers: give the name of the senator and you will be transferred to their office. You will then either speak to a staff member, or to voice mail on the weekend.

When possible ask to speak to each senator’s environmental aide. This will give you a better chance to get your message across because you will be talking to someone who is familiar with the issue.

Another important thing to note is that this isn’t just about wolves: “as [Josh Mogerman, spokesman for the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington, D.C.] said the rider could mean threats to additional species in the future. ‘There’s a process in place for dealing with these issues in the courts. But by Congress acting, it’s just a completely different animal,’ he said. ‘You look down the [Endangered Species Act], you see critter after critter and plant after plant that are probably inconvenient to special interests all over the  country. And what [they] have done is opened the door to removing plants and animals from the ESA by whim, rather than science.’”

Bear killing exposed, thanks to Freedom of Information Act  »

[Can’t see the video? Watch it on vegansaurus.com]

This is disturbing. Some country music bro killed a tame and adorable bear named Cubby, making a big to-do about his “wildlife” hunt. There was a whole court case about it and Troy Gentry, the bro in question, was fined $15,000 for falsely registering the kill (got to righteously register those kills, bro!). What makes the case crazier, the organization Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) fought the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for THREE YEARS to get the footage of the “hunt” released. Gentry pleaded guilty in 2006 but SHARK’s video JUST came out last week. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the footage was eventually released because, as the lead attorney for SHARK said, “The judge ruled that the ‘privacy interests were quite minimal’ because portions of the video were ‘already shown on national television, and they had planned to use it for a country video.’” Privacy shmivacy d-bag.

God bless the Freedom of Information Act and WTF? Who kills a bear named CUBBY? Cubby (well, Cubbi) was the adorable young Gummi Bear in the best cartoon of all time! Before being murdered, this Cubby was a wildlife “model” that the owner would rent out for wildlife photography. It’s old news that wildlife photography is a total joke, but it’s still crazy. How lame is it to rent “wild” animals and fake pictures? A: SO LAME. Goddamn liars! Still, why did the owner retire Cubby and let Gentry murder him? Because the bear developed dental problems. Are you joking with me? This is what happens with “working” animals: they get exploited their whole lives and then once they need something, KA-POW! Arrow to the lung.

Hey everybody, I’m about to show you a super-sad video! However, it’s early and I don’t actually enjoy depressing everyone first thing in the morning, so before we get to the upsetting video, let’s watch the adorable harp seal in the video above! I’ll wait.

Jesus Christmas, so cute! Right? So cute.

Now that I’ve lifted your spirits a bit, time to get real. You know I try to keep you updated on vegan and animal-related advertising so here’s the latest: a Peta commercial about the Canadian seal hunt garnered second place for video advertising in July 2010 over at Ads of the World, a super-popular ad blog. It was second to the Old Spice guy video—that’s pretty high praise! People are bonkers for that Old Spice ad.

The Peta commercial is part of their “Explore Elsewhere” campaign, a rebuttal to the Canadian Tourism Commission’s “Come Explore Canada” campaign. I think “Explore Elsewhere” is a pretty funny tag but I’m not exactly sure why Ads of the World likes the video so much. It’s a pretty standard video by Peta. It’s not bad, it’s just nothing new. I think maybe the reason the ad blog likes the commercial is because Peta used Canada’s national anthem as the soundtrack. That’s a pretty big diss! I’m into it.

This ad is also important now because the European Union’s general court just put a suspension on the legislation that would ban the sale of seal products in Europe that passed last year. The suspension came about because an Inuit group is claiming that the ban will hurt the market for them, even though it does not include products from their seal hunt. I think that’s an unreasonable argument; I know I’m not an economist but I don’t think that argument is reason enough to maintain an entire industry that’s nothing short of despicable.

Luckily! The badasses of the EU decided to go along with the ban anyway! Yee-ha, cowboys! Still, any group that already filed court actions appealing the ban aren’t yet included in it. LAME. Oh, I have a question: who in Europe was buying all these seal products? People are saying the ban will be a huge blow to the seal-product market—that means there are a bunch of mofos in Europe that have been buying the hell out of seal products. Who are these freaks?

OK, without further ado, let’s watch the Peta commercial. Wait, there’s some ado left: WARNING! THIS VIDEO IS GRAPHIC, WATCH AT YOUR OWN RISK! Seriously, I won’t be mad if you can’t watch it, it’s very upsetting. If you think you can stomach it, here it is:

Jeez louise, I’m about to cry! But I have work to do today! Let’s all go listen to Cee-lo Green’s latest, greatest song and try to pull it together.
