The Spooky Vegan has an excellent round-up of all the vegan pumpkin shiz at Trader Joe’s right now, including VEGAN PUMPKIN ROLLS BRB EATING EVERYTHING.
Of course, I’ve already added this to the Trader Joe’s vegan eats Pinterest board, which is the best.

Vegan Yack Attack releases vegan pumpkin-themed e-cookbook!  »

image

For those of you who don’t follow Jackie Sobon’s amazing blog, Vegan Yack Attack (um, get on it!!), she released her first e-book, The Great Vegan Pumpkin eBook, along with a sneak peek recipe for a DOUBLE PUMPKIN BEER FLOAT! There’s plenty more where that came from in her book. 20 recipes based around this spectacular squash (who, besides zucchini-loving Jenny Bradley, doesn’t love pumpkin!?!) Remember that time you ate so much pumpkin you thought you’d never eat it again? NEITHER DO I BECAUSE THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN! Just in time for the holidays, all your pumpkin-loving, vegan dreams can come true.

I might be a little biased, since Jackie is a dear friend of mine (no accident that I surround myself with great vegan cooks, let’s get fat and happy!), but her recipes are always creative and really easy to follow. I had the (tasty) pleasure of trying one of the Biscoff Cream Cheese-Frosted Spiced Cupcakes, while she was testing recipes for her book, and HOLY BISCOFF, BATMAN, it was good.

So clickity-click through and buy her book today! It’s $7, but she’s offering a special $1-off coupon (coupon code at the bottom of her blog post). And happy pumpkin eating!

And, just because I can never pass up an opportunity for a bad pun, here goes it, “What’s the ratio of a pumpkin’s circumference to its diameter?”

Give up!? It’s, “Pumpkin Pi!!”

Baking with Blue Balls Bakery: gluten-free, pumpkin spice, chocolate chip cookies!   »

Well everyone, fall has officially descended upon us. To tell you the truth, I’m still in denial and I’m not ready to think about squash soups, Halloween OR pumpkin lattes (especially not pumpkin lattes). I’m not ready to lose the glow of my sun-kissed skin for the almost transparent color I get in winter! I WANT IT TO STOP!

Since I can’t stop the hands of time, denial it is. But wait, what’s this? A charming baking tutorial featuring gluten-free, pumpkin spice, chocolate chip cookies? Yep, and I love it! I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact it was created by my internet bestie and future vegan bakery co-owner (we love cats and mimosas, the building blocks to any solid friendship), Amber!

Amber, you’ve changed my mind about the arrival of pumpkin season! Okay fall, I’m in! San Francisco is pretty much fall year-round anyway, the sun just goes down at different times depending on the calendar month.

Not only is Amber an extremely talented vegan baker and decorator, she’s super funny and charismatic too! Watching this video, I feel like I’m in the kitchen with her, at least until I’m unable to try one of those delectable looking cookies. But that’s okay, because thanks to her guidance, I can now make my own cookies! Oh my gosh, don’t even get me started on the one-liners! (“Speaking of wet ingredients”, holds up a beer to drink.)

Fingers crossed that with popular demand (you) Amber will start making baking videos on the reg. I heard a rumor (received a text) that a mimosa cupcake tutorial may be in the works… I hope it’s true!

You can follow Amber on Twitter and Instagram at MonkandMao, and be sure to subscribe to her Youtube channel “Blue Balls Bakery”.

Thanksgiving Recipe AND Cookbook Review: Vegan A La Mode  »

image
Overall Rating: A
Creativity: A+
Level of Difficulty: Intermediate
Best for: Anyone who owns an ice cream maker. Bonus if you have adventurous taste in dessert.

Why review an ice cream cookbook in November?

  1. You should make the Easy As Pumpkin Pie recipe (below) for your Thanksgiving feast.
  2. We like to keep you guessing.

I know a thing or two about vegan ice cream recipes. For our wedding in summer 2011, my husband and I made 18 flavors in place of having a wedding cake. I sure wish Ms. Hannah had gotten around to publishing this gem of a book in time for our wedding guests to benefit.

This is hands-down the finest collection of vegan ice cream recipes ever made. Hannah Kaminsky is to vegan ice cream what Terry and Isa are to vegan cupcakes or Miyoko Schinner is to vegan cheese. Her creativity with flavors is unparalleled, but so are her solutions for richness and texture.

Making the Buttery Popcorn flavor. Seriously.

The book started as a blog, so you can check out some recipes there. At least a third of the flavors are what I’d call “highly experimental”: beet marmalade, wasabi-ginger-sesame-chocolate, buttered popcorn. Others are easy crowd-pleasers: peanut-butter Oreo, French vanilla, maple-pecan. Some are pretty ambitious (Birthday Cake requires that you cook cupcakes, then put them in the blender). Some are super-simple (see Easy As Pumpkin Pie, below). All that I’ve made have been delectable and worth the work.

Each recipe appears on its own spread, which makes the logistics of cooking easy, and most have a sexy glamour shot to make you drool. Some of the thickeners and texturizers might be unfamiliar (guar gum, anyone?), but Rainbow Grocery sells them in bulk, so buy a tablespoonful and experiment. The Banana Pudding ice cream, which includes a hit of guar, is the only vegan flavor I’ve ever made that scooped soft straight out of the freezer.

Final verdict:  If you have an ice cream maker, you owe it to yourself and that little machine to buy this book. (If you don’t have one, you should get one. They’re great. I’ve got this one by Cuisinart.)

AND AS PROMISED, A RECIPE!

Roasted pumpkin seeds three ways with our pal Jerry James Stone!
You guys aren’t afraid of roasting pumpkin seeds, right? My ma roasts hers plain to feed to her chinchilla, but we humans aren’t usually thrilled by such unembellished snacks. JJS has got three spice mixes for your pepitas: salted, maple and sea salt, and coffee and chili (ooh).
And a video, in case you’re better at watching than reading:
