Get your pet fixed for free at the SPCA this month!  »

That’s right, FREE! But only during February. You may recall we broached this subject earlier this month, as Chan Marshall (Cat Power), Katherine Heigl, Rachael Ray, and Vegansaurus are all advocates of getting your pet FIXED! There are too many unwanted animals that end up in shelters everyday. Listen to PETA Chan.

Jennifer Scarlett, D.V.M. and co-president of the SF SPCA, says, “We hope our efforts will encourage pet guardians across the city to make the responsible choice to have their pet spayed or neutered. If you want San Francisco to be a No-Kill city, the most important thing you can do is spay or neuter your pet.”

You can schedule an appointment at (415) 554.3030, and learn more online. We also got a tip that people cancel their appointments every day. So if you neglect to make one, or all the spaces are filled, you could still get in by calling the SPCA in the morning to see if any appointments have opened up. This means fasting your dog or cat the night before, but it will be worth it if you can get in there!

Stolen and abused dog Toto still needs funds for surgery!  »

I checked in with the SF SPCA to see how the money-raising was going for Toto, and they still have $730 more to go! And they need it before Feb. 10th! They also said, “Toto is doing well! Yvette, his owner, says he was pretty tired last week after the vet appointment, but seems a lot better now… ‘more pep in his step.’ She’s getting him a lot of new toys to encourage him to keep playing and be active.”

If you don’t remember what happened, here’s the story from Rachel’s previous post:

Toto the dog got kidnapped and tortured, ARG. Why are people such evil bastards?

But now the SF SPCA is taking care of him and they need your help to raise $5000 by February 10th to pay for his surgeries!

Here’s the story, according to the SPCA:

“Toto is a 12-year-old Yorkie who was stolen from his fenced-in yard. Eight months later he was returned to his owner’s doorstep, in a crate, with multiple injuries including missing front teeth and a missing left eye. His owner rushed him to a vet hospital but couldn’t afford the necessary medical procedures. Toto is now receiving care at the SF SPCA Veterinary Hospital.”

To help, click here, or make a $10 donation by texting “SPCA” to 27722.

If you don’t have the cash, you could help by spreading the word to the rich people who do, especially the 1%, they all love tiny dogs, right? Go Toto go!

So if you can, please help Toto! This is such a terrible thing to happen. Maybe we can offset it by being the best support community ever.

Hot guys and baby animals, HOLLER!  »

Dishes are done, man: this is what I want for Christmas! I present the 2011 Hot Guys and Baby Animals calendar. Now, “with even HOTTER guys and BABIER animals!” That rules. This whole thing rules. I’m walking on a cloud! Add free booze and you have all my favorite things. PLUS! A portion of the proceeds are donated to the SFSPCA and the Milo Foundation. PLUS! It’s printed with soy-based inks. PLUS! Many of the animals are rescues and some are still available for adoption (I doubt for long!). However, “the men are not up for adoption, but may be in need of rescuing.” Haaaaaa. Oh, men.

Check out their ecards too. I’m in love.

Make San Francisco a No-Kill City TUESDAY NIGHT!  »

We need people to show up to the Animal Welfare Commission meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 5:30 p.m. in room 408 of San Francisco City Hall. Find City Hall at 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, right off the Civic Center Bart/Muni station!

Adoptable animals are being killed in SF shelters, and if you’d like to express your opinion about making SF a no-kill city, PLEASE COME! The fact is thousands of adoptable animals are put down every year because they fail a ridiculously hard temperament test, or have minor health problems, or are too old, or are a breed considered “violent” and “dangerous.” You know, racism.

Here’s exactly what they’ll be discussing:

5. Unfinished Business
A) The Commission will discuss and take possible action to table indefinitely the issue of whether or not San Francisco should mandate that all city shelters not euthanize any adoptable animal or any animal that would be adoptable after behavioral or medical intervention. The Commission has discussed various aspects of this issue over the course of the past two years. In May 2010, the Commission said it would revisit the issue in three months, and this agenda item fulfills that commitment. [Discussion/Action Item] [Commissioner Brooks]

San Francisco does an admirable job of re-homing thousands of homeless animals each year, far better than most cities, but we do have the resources, the rescue groups, and the ability to make that number even higher. The more pressure we put on the city to make this happen, the more likely it will happen. It’ll take less than an hour of your time and has the potential to help thousands and thousands of animals. Plus, you get to see our government! at! work! And usually a fair amount of crazy people, too. You know you love it.

See you there!

SFACC and SFSPCA swamped with cats and kittens!  »

That's Chloe! Adopt her cute ass!If you’ve been contemplating a kitty companion, now is the time! Head to SFACC or SFSPCA (or both! They’re right next to each other!) and get your new feline best friend! The shelters are over flowing with cuddly cuteness because of the down economy. Stupid people. Stupid economy. Depression 2.0, it just got personal. Actually, it was personal about a year and a half ago, but you’ve just renewed my disgust.

If you’re not super-keen on adopting but want to help out, I bet you could foster through Give Me Shelter cat rescue. Be persistent if a rescue person doesn’t get back to you! Keep calling! They’re often overwhelmed trying to keep everything in order while receiving no pay and working other full time jobs so don’t be bummed/miffed [Ed.: heh] if they don’t get back to you right away. Just keep trying! It’ll happen! And you’ll save some lives in the process and that makes you a real life Super(Wo)Man. Awww…

SPCA kitty portraits!  »

Kira Stackhouse is an SF-based photographer who does super-great pet portraits! Yay pet portraits! She also volunteers her camera abilities to give weekly photo updates of the kitties available at the SF SPCA. If there’s one thing I love more than cute animal pictures, it’s cute adoptable-animal pictures!

How tough is Joseph? Hint: SO TOUGH. He’s like, “Oh, look at this wise guy wit the camera ovah here. Frickin’ hilarious.” And Cheddar needs to get in my purse like right now.

Kira also has a line of dog clothes that are made entirely from vintage people clothes. Figaro does not yet own one of these originals but if she ever makes a Yuengling one, holler at your girl!

The scary thing is that I’ve been singing nearly this exact song to Mika for the last month (with the “meow meow meow-meow-meow” chorus and everything) before San Francisco SPCA released theirs. Anyway, go watch Cat Romance now because it’s cute as hell. And adopt some cats!

And God Did Say, Let There be Kittens!  »

Sorry Jews and other non-Christian minorities, it’s Christmastime once again. You would know this if you’ve been to Union Square lately—the Christmas spirit is all up in that mofo! And while living by Union Square is a foot-traffic bonanza year-round, it just doesn’t bother me as much when there’s ice-skating to be done and roasted chestnuts to be had (which are GOOD. Jerks.). My favorite part of it all…the kittens and puppies!

Every year, the Macy’s windows on the corner of Stockton and O’Farrell here in San Francisco are taken over by the SPCA. They fill them with weird miniature woodland furniture and throw in a few puppies and kittens in each window and let the magic happen (NOOO! I just mean magic like people fall in love with them. Jeez, to neuter is cuter.). If you go by in the evening, you’ll see many “adopted” signs in the windows—most of them get adopted before the end of the day.

I love these damn puppies and kittens with their wacky elfin furniture! I take Figaro down to look at them about everyday until it’s over. He’s an SPCA alumnus so he’s basically the goodwill ambassador for shelter animals. Sometimes a puppy will come up to the window to look at Fig and it’s kind of the cute Olympics. Quite a crowd-pleaser!

But there is one thing that I can’t help but think about: isn’t impulse-shopping a big no-no when it comes to pets? I feel like not only do most animal-welfare organizations warn against getting pets on a whim, a lot of them are like, “Don’t buy pets for birthdays! Or Christmas! Or Easter! Or anytime fun!” So having cute-ass little puppies in the windows of a department store in the center of the shopping Mecca at Christmas seems like…well, a genius idea! But one that could end in buyer’s remorse and a lot of homeless slightly older pups. Fortunately, while adopters can submit applications and lay claim to the bitty pets, they have to wait a day or two before they can bring them home—so anyone being super-impulsive has a chance to abandon ship.

SPCA representatives are on-hand to answer your questions and collect donations. AND GUESS WHAT ELSE! There’s a WEBCAM! It’s totally SFW, btw.

[Ed.: Please welcome a new Vegansaurus regular, the fantastic Megan Rascal! Megan Rascal moved to San Francisco all the way from Philly to study copywriting. She also moonlights as DJ My Lil’ Pony, everyone’s favorite dancing DJ. She loves her adopted dog Figaro, peanut butter, and garage rock. Check out her blogs: You Talk Funny (cultural linguistics) and The Daily Rascal (awesome shit).]

World Wide Vegan Bakesale News!  »

Next weekend is the official World Wide Vegan Bakesale—come see Vegansaurus next Saturday and Sunday (June 27th & 28th!) at the sale we’re awesomelly participating in—but you don’t have to wait that long to buy delicious baked goods, for charity.

Valencia Street’s own Little Otsu is hosting a solo bakesale by Violet Sweet Shoppe on Sunday, 21 June, from 1 to 4 p.m.! Crystal Rice, proprietor of VSS, will donate half of the proceeds to Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue.

You can check them out for yourself on Saturday (20 June); Mickaboo is having a bird “meet and greet” as part of the SF SPCA’s Rescue, Recycle, Renew adoption fair, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Then head over to see Crystal at Little Otsu on Sunday to eat cookies and help out all those charming birds you met, and greeted.

You see, it is a perfect weekend.

(also: Adopt a cat! They will totally get along great with your companion bird! And how cute is a cat licking the frosting from your vegan cupcake? TOO CUTE, is the answer. Have a damn heart, save a kitty already.)
