Hey, it’s a special UC Berkeley edition of the Meatless Monday Unicorn! I made this a while back for their Meatless Monday initiative and found it recently. Thought I’d share! Because sharing is, etc! But it’s as relevant as ever because I think MMU is taking some summer classes and will hopefully pass on some of his new knowledge to us in the next months. We’ll see.
Speaking of which, you can share this MMU through flickr! Or right from this post. Whatever the kids are doing these days. Just make sure you remind your omni friends that it’s Meatless Monday once again!
Bay Area vegans! Check out the Corporate Control of the Food System Symposium at UC Berkeley! It’s tonight, from 6:30 to 9* at 60 Evans on the Cal campus, and they’ll have speakers from the Rainforest Action Network, Food First, the Coalition to Fight Factory Farming, Pesticide Action Network North America, Take Back the Tap, the Sustainable Economies Law Center, and the Berkeley Student Food Collective.

Although I haven’t read Sistah Vegan yet, I have watched some of A. Breeze Harper’s videos here. I’m so excited to see her in person. Any Vegansaurus readers planning on going? Shocking revelation: your Vegansaurus is a media omnivore. It’s that pesky reading addiction; our eyes are probably ruined from all the reading we do, in print and online. The newest best thing to read on the internet is the Ration, “a project on food and health by the UC Berkeley along with students from University of Missouri, Harvard University and City University, London.” No, Michael “shut up” Pollan doesn’t seem to be involved with it, which is great, because man has that guy earned his nickname.
The Ration has only been up since last week, but its archives already look bountiful. They’ve got a story on prescription produce that’s informative without being (too) preachy, one on the health and well being of agricultural workers, one on a new aspect of the food industry’s stupidity, and an article on meat glue that is fascinatingly gross/grossly fascinating. The infographics are beautiful, like these interactive ones on the sources of calories in the U.S. and the changing nutritional density of our produce. Its videos are also quite compelling.
The Ration is gorgeous and interesting and I hope it fulfills its enormous potential. What we need more of is intelligent reporting on food.
World Week for Animals in Laboratories »
That’s right, it’s World Week for Animals In Labs (WWAIL)! There’s a listing of events by state on WWAIL.org. The events in California are all on Monday, Apr. 25 and there’s one at Berkeley—check out the facebook event page. From WWAIL:
In 2009 UC Berkeley had a total of 1,155 animals: 15 cats, 32 guinea pigs, 683 hamsters, 174 rabbits, 18 non-human primates, 26 hyenas, 29 moles, 7 squirrels, 80 tuco tucos, 51 voles, and 40 wild mice. Their labs are completely underground and go unnoticed by not only anyone just walking by but especially to their students. They are expanding their laboratories which means even more animals will be tortured and killed behind closed doors.
So you should go if you can! And you can contact firstname.lastname@example.org to help plan an event in your area. I didn’t see any in NYC, does anyone know anything about that? I know NYU does some screwed-up shit. And I’m not just talking about allowing Laura to graduate! Sorry, it’s hard to be funny when talking about such awful sad stuff but if we don’t laugh, we’ll jump off a bridge, ya know? And then no more Vegansaurus and how depressed would you be? The answer better be VERY DEPRESSED or I’ll jump off a bridge!

1) Vegan Happy Hour on Friday, Feb. 11! It’s got a romantical theme, too. And don’t forget, two awesome vegan cookbook authors are in town for events so maybe they’ll be there and you can woo them with your sweet words/tasty potluck additions?? Anything can happen, it’s Valentine’s Day weekend! Let that fat fucker shoot you through the heart with his terrifying arrow. Sweet love.
2) On Saturday, Feb. 12, there’s Lovers and Liberators: A benefit for the Red Vic. The lineup is a little complicated but definitely Bold Native will be screened and Cinnaholic is providing cinnamon rolls. WHAT COULD BE MORE ROMANTIC? RSVP (?) on Facebook, Romeo.
3) Also on Saturday, attend a Raw Divine Desserts class. Make vegan desserts and them eat them off your LOVA. Or eat them sobbing under your blankets. It’s delicious either way!
As far as super romantic VD dinners, It’s probably too late to get reservations anywhere good, so why don’t you cook your honey a fine meal at home? The nerds at KQED always advocate it—check out last year’s (vegan!) recipe for Heart’s Desire Beet Salad. Nothing like a beet to heat up the kitchen. That’s my advice to you for February 14. If you’re in Berkeley tomorrow, Tuesday Nov. 16 and wants some FREE VEGAN FOOD, look no further than Berkeley Organization for Animal Advocacy’s Thanksliving event! These kids have Got It Going On food-wise, with great companies like Gardein and Field Roast donating, so you know shiz is gonna be DELICIOUS.
The celebration takes place tomorrow at UC Berkeley’s Upper Sproul from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., but I bet to take full advantage of the free eats, you should probably get there on the earlier side? I know how people (read: me) get around free food, and the words “disgusting” and “insane” come to mind. Organizer Monica Chen says that it’s a particularly great event for omnis because they can try all sorts of amazing vegan options and see that a veg Thanksgiving isn’t just possible, it’s extra delicious! So, bring your grumpalump meat-mouth friends and family and show them the tasty-ass light!

JSF makes a modern Modest Proposal to omnivores: how about some delicious dog? One of your Vegansaurs’ first solid foods was dog soup. This was not a major factor in his/her decision to go vegan (GUESS WHOSE), as it only happened once, during toddlerhood; the point is, duh, all meat is equally reprehensible.
This one time, in August, Emperor David Chang of Saying Idiotic Things made a vegetarian meal, at the behest of the James Beard Foundation. Color Vegansaurus unimpressed; we’ve had at least as fancy at Brassica.

How revolting: a guy in Cleveland had very poorly hidden the bodies of six women—who had been raped and murdered—“in and around” his house, which is next door to a sausage factory, which some people blamed for the stench. Rotting carcasses stink, be they human or other animal.
In fucked-up and depressing animal news, there’s still one organization associated with the veal calf slaughterhouse exposé that apparently supports the obscene treatment of those baby cows. Unregulated free markets always arrive at the best solutions, right?
The SF Bay Guardian makes a giant effort and reviews Greens. Revelation: it still makes good food. Your omnivorous friends will not complain (too much) about being denied their meat for one meal. Like we were saying, a new restaurant critic with some imagination re: veg food, please.
Our pals at CSA Delivery blog have been killing it with their vegan recipes lately: dolmas with caramelized leek hummus; chard and chickpea burgers with quick pickled veggies; vegetable curry; soft chili tofu. UGH SO HUNGRY.
On Saturday, Nov. 21, friends-of-Vegansaurus Farm Sanctuary are hosting a Celebration for the Turkeys dinner, “designed” by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau! Tickets cost $75 for adults and $35 for children, and are on sale now. Unless you are also a famous vegan cookbook author, this is guaranteed to be a lot tastier than your Thanksgiving dinner, so you might as well go. Plus it supports farm animals, instead of crazy relatives who drink too much/not enough; a pig will never ask you when you’re going to give it grandchildren or if you’ve put on weight.
Free “Food, Inc.” screening in Berkeley! »
Berkeley, get going: tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 4, the Boalt Hall Animal Law Society will show Food, Inc. Be in room 100 in Boalt Hall on the UC Berkeley campus by 5:30 p.m. for the screening, which is free for everyone! Awesome! The film runs about 90 minutes, and is supposed to be very good. Or at least worth no money!
