All-vegan Cupcake Wars episode this Sunday!  »

This Sunday, March 4, there’s an ALL VEGAN episode of Cupcake Wars!

They say, “In the first ever Cupcake Wars all-vegan showdown, four vegan bakers fight to have their cupcakes at the opening day celebration for the inaugural Los Angeles Green Festival.”

Woo! So exciting! Now give vegans a regular cooking show! Preferably starring Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Chloe Coscarelli living in a tree house together with a bear and a squirrel. Also, they’re always having a tea party and I’m in the background eating all the food and waving at my mom. PLENTY MORE IDEAS WHERE THAT CAME FROM. Call me!

[Perhaps someone will make Sarah’s Chocolate Raspberry Cupcakes and take home the gold? People with cable will find out this Sunday!]

Ellen Degeneres Talks Veganism with Katie Couric!  »

Ellen Degeneres is the shit. Watch this from 15:25 on. She’s so fucking right on. Love, love, love, love, love. My favorite is when she tells Katie Couric that Food, Inc is like a Disney movie compared to Earthlings. GET IT, GIRL!

Alicia Silverstone on Oprah today!  »

Set your VCRs, DVRs, and Bittorrent TV-stealy programs: Alicia Silverstone will be on Oprah today! She’ll be on with Michael Pollan (who I know most of you hate but I count anyone who goes around persuading Americans to eat more plants and less meat as an ally) with some footage from Food Inc. At this rate, the Oprahnator is going to need an entire show on her new TV network devoted to vegan cooking and food politics. (Hint, hint, and PS hire me to produce it, I’m not remotely qualified but I swear it’ll be good.)

Tune in today; check your local listings for times, or just watch the grainy version later on YouTube.

Art Smith’s vegan almond brittle  »

Art Smith might hate vegans since his big loss on Top Chef Masters this week; in his defense, he probably had no idea about the differences between vegan ice creams, and how assy a base rice milk generally is. Zooey Deschanel (where was super-awesome animal rights advocate Emily, by the way?) did really flip for his almond brittle, though, so here is the recipe for you. If someone manages to successfully recreate this candy, do let us know.

Art Smith’s vegan almond brittle
Ingredients
•    2-1/2 cups granulated sugar
•    1 cup water
•    1/4 cup Agave syrup
•    1 cup toasted almonds
•    1 Tbsp baking soda
•    Pinch of salt
•    2 Tbsps unsalted [non-dairy]* butter
•    1 Tbsp vanilla extract
•    Semi-sweet chocolate, melted, for garnish

Directions
Bring ingredients to a boil and cook to hard-boil state: until syrup makes a hard ball and is amber in color. Stir in toasted almonds and the remainder of the ingredients. Pour on well oiled sheet pan, and carefully, with forks, pull until thin, being VERY CAREFUL not to burn yourself. Cool, till crispy. Once cool break into pieces. Drizzle with melted semi-sweet chocolate and allow to dry.

*Oddly, the recipe as printed called for “butter,” which seems particularly stupid, but stupid and obvious mistakes are something Bravo’s known for.
