As you may have heard, the Factory Farming Awareness Coalition won free ad space on BART for the third year in a row! Congrats, you guys! In part thanks to many of our readers voting I’m sure. Well, the ads have launched! And they are already getting some nice coverage.
This year, I actually helped with the ad concepting and copy a bit. FFAC wanted to target dairy, including an ad taking aim at the role of dairy in the CA drought. They were inspired by this Mother Jones post showing just how much water goes into various dairy products. The shower idea came because, like us vegans continue to lament, it’s ridiculous how the water conservation agenda focuses so much attention on things like turning the water off when you brush your teeth or watering your lawn at dawn but they neglect to inform people about the impact of meat and dairy on the water supply. Meanwhile, avoiding those products would make a HUGE impact in water conservation. Not that the other suggestions aren’t good, but they are so minor compared to resource-suck that is animal agriculture.
Here’s the other ad, a gentle alert to the fact that dairy cows have to have babies to produce milk—and those babies aren’t hanging out with mom if people are drinking the milk. It doesn’t go all the way to the veal industry relationship but just connecting the dots for people about mammals…milk…babies…is important. I have conversations all the time with non-vegans who are completely unaware that dairy cows don’t just constantly produce milk without being impregnated. Actually, if we’re being honest, I didn’t really know that before I started looking into veganism. I mean if you think about it, it’s like duh, but we are just so distanced from food sources that people don’t even think about the logistics of it all.
However! It’s not all doom and gloom in this post! FFAC wanted me to inform you that they are holding a little Instagram contest for the ads and the prizes are SO EXCITING! Scooter the Neutered Cat promotes a gonad-free lifestyle to save kitties »
Megan Rascal here, on the Ad Beat again. Here’s a super silly commercial for GiveThemTen.org, a campaign to combat kitty overpopulation and euthanasia in shelters:I love Scooter! He will definitely catch some attention and that’s got to be good for spreading the message. I know from past posts that many of us disagree on cats in clothes, but I’m fine with it if the cat isn’t protesting. And Scooter seems super chill.
You can see some behind the scenes shots in this video below. Apparently, Scooter comes from a shelter himself. The shelter said he was unadoptable because he had a serious ‘tude. Look at the boy now!:
Totally chill. And he has a great message because hella cats are killed in shelters all the time. Besides simply raising awareness on the importance of spaying and neuturing, Scooter provides a lot of info about where to get low-cost spay/neuter surgery and will even give your cat a ride to get snipped! There’s also info on TNR and links to kitties up for adoption. So, lots of good stuff on the site.
You know who they need to do a campaign like this for? Bros with male dogs. Because, I swear, I have encountered way too many dudes who won’t neuter their male dogs because of some sort of testicle worship. Bonkers. Are people like that about male cats too? Or is it just a dog thing?
Of course it is to be noted that GiveThemTen.org specifies it wants a no-kill world for cats. And as we’ve recently discussed, most people feed their cats other animals. So, I guess those other animals don’t get a no-kill world. BUT less cats having babies means less cats around to eat other animals. We still win! Yay!
Note: Is “Give Them Ten” a play on 9 lives?? That’s what I’m thinking but not sure. I invite your insight.
Stop eating eggs! For Little Miss Sunshine’s sake! »
Animals Australia has a funny campaign, "That ain’t no way to treat a lady" about egg-laying hens. It’s a cute little play on gender roles. You can see the commercials on the link above but I like this sweet video about Little Miss Sunshine! Look at her looking in the mirror! So silly! I love her!

Fancy Pants, a digital agency my dear brother knows, made this cute holiday-themed game that actually helps animals! When you win the game (I didn’t get it at first, took me a 2nd try but then I won), they will donate $5 to the World Society for the Protection of Animals to help animals effected by Typhoon Haiyan!
Before some joker says it, yes, they could just directly donate the money without people having to play a game BUT doing something like this brings so much more awareness to the cause! And makes helping animals more fun. So play! Share! Play again! Share again! And so on and so forth etc.
Oh, there’s also a steak at some points. But it’s a cartoon steak. But I’m sorry anyway.

Several people suggested Vegansaurus might want to post that Chipotle scarecrow commercial. I was like…you’re cray. All my advertising friends were immediately taken with the vid and posting it all over fb and I was just like…you’re cray. How can anyone take this seriously? Sorry bros, Chipotle is not some caring, anti-big ag corporation. I like Chipotle, I won’t lie, but come on. Don’t be silly.
Then, finally, one of my ad peoples (Yay Pete Johnson! Speak the truth!) posted this Funny or Die parody. Please, let it knock some sense into the world.

I’m pretty sure this translates to Bordercocker fire tail. One of the many unique “breeds” you’ll find at the Territorio de Zaguates shelter in Costa Rica.
Territorio de Zaguates found that while interest in adopting was up, many people didn’t want “mutts.” Agency Garnier BBDO took a new approach to this by marketing these mutts as new one-of-a-kind breeds!

PETA continues its quest to be the weirdest pro-vegan organization on earth—not that there’s a lot of competition, but definitely it’s steep—with PETA Europe’s sexxxxy sexxxxxxxy animals-doin-it video promoting the “bigger sexual appetite” of us vegans.
Maybe it’s spring and all the pigeons out are strutting for each other, but I’m not in immediate hate with this thing. What do you guys think? Puerile and great, or just puerile?
Here I am, on the vegan ad beat again! This time, we have a wacky spot from Silk by agency EVB. I haven’t tried Silk Iced Latte yet, have you? Is it good? I’m not one for iced coffee but it’s about to be summertime. Hot weather makes people go all sorts of cray. Once I start sweating, who knows what I might do! Drink iced lattes! Take a cab five blocks! Hole up in my air-conditioned apartment watching DeadZone on Roku and going straight-up Todd Oldham on the walls with potato stencils and hot-pink paint!
