Important Vegan Discussions: Who should zombies eat? »
Vegansaurus Zombie by Toe Tag Riot artist Sean Von Gorman! AMAZING!
In his new comic series, Matt Miner, a vegan of 11 years, takes a look at ethics from a zombie perspective. Toe Tag Riot centers on an early 2000s streetpunk band that suffers from a serious curse—sometimes they become zombies and have to eat human flesh to stay alive! However, they are “ethical zombies” and decide to only eat racists, misogynists, and homophobes. But…
Finding that the transformation back into regular, filthy, punk rockers is taking longer and longer each time, the band goes on one last cross-country tour, chasing the cure to what ails ‘em and hilariously/brutally slaughtering the worst of humanity along the way to an explosive showdown with The Westboro Baptist Church.
Since Matt Miner is one of Vegansaurus’ favorite vegan comic book creators, I caught up with him to hear more about Toe Tag Riot. The series is still in the works and Matt is currently holding a Kickstarter to produce the comic. You can get a lot of awesome perks from the fundraiser, like an amazing commissioned watercolor by Sean Von Gorman! I just contributed so I can get one of Figaro and I’m drop dead ecstatic.
Toe Tag Riot standard cover by Tristan Jones, colors by Doug Garbark.
I asked Matt a few questions about the project (and other very important things like puppies and food trucks), here’s what he had to say:
Vegansaurus: What’s an “ethical zombie”? Is it the zombie equivalent to an ethical vegan?
Matt Miner: Hey Megan! I’m so glad you asked. Seeing as how I think zombies literally can’t survive on a plant based diet, the only “ethical” choice, once zombified, would be to eat bad guys like misogynists, racists, and homophobes.
Make the world a better place by slaughtering and devouring jerks and hate groups! Why not? Can’t see the video? Watch it on Vegansaurus.com!
How does your veganism influence your work?
There’s a bit of me in any project I do and a lot of my creator-owned work has a hidden message of compassion or tolerance in it. With my comic series Liberator, the whole premise was about young vigilantes who break the law to protect abused animals. With Toe Tag Riot, I started thinking about “what/who would I eat if I was a zombie? What’s the most-ethical choice of human to consume?” and it kinda snowballed from there.
What’s your favorite vegan/vegan-friendly eatery I’m NYC?
Do food trucks count as eateries? Because the Cinnamon Snail food truck is my favorite vegan food in NYC, possibly the world. Follow them on Twitter at @VeganLunchTruck and ask them to NEVER EVER AGAIN take the 5-spice seitan sandwich off their menu EVER again. :)
Are you fostering any cutie pie animals now? Pictures or I don’t believe you.
Aside from our personal “zoo” of rescues, we are indeed fostering a fantastic 7-year-old tiny little pit bull mix named Reeses! She kinda looks like a Corgi/Pit and she just beat breast cancer like a true champion. All she wants to do is cuddle and play, so NYC area, if you have room in your heart and your home, hit me up for more info on Reeses. Find me on Twitter at mattminerxvx or email MattMinerXVX@gmail.com.
Reeses. Oh em geeee.
Why are you Kickstarting this comic series? Why do you need to raise money to make the book?
We’re making the book to tell a super fun story of punk rock zombies but also to put an inclusive, and LGBT-positive message out into comic shops and into the hands of a fandom that can still be an intolerant, sexist and homophobic place at times.
The Kickstarter pays for the art team’s rates and for all the rewards and shipping—making comics isn’t a cheap undertaking, so that’s why we headed to Kickstarter. Kickstarter is all-or-nothing funding, so if we don’t raise the full amount then we won’t collect any of it and the book will be scrapped.
If we succeed on the funding, though, we’re going to put this amazing story into the hands of people worldwide who might not normally think twice about calling someone a “fag” or a “slut”.
So, please pledge—and share the project on your social networks. We have some incredible rewards for those people awesome enough to throw their support behind this great project.
Thanks, Matt! And thanks, Sean! I can’t wait for my Figgy picture!

Sweet Summer is still looking for a home, come on, world!! It’s not fair, she’s just a beautiful, wonderful, sweet bully spirit and she wants to go home with you. She’s been waiting for her forever home for over a year, and it’s starting to get ridiculous.
She was rescued from almost certain death at a high-kill shelter in California, and is ready to put that life behind her and be your princess. Please, please, pretty please — if you’re looking for a dog, SUMMER IS FOR YOU!!!
She’s got a sincere zest for life. She enjoys sprinting through green grass, bouncing around on her back legs and cuddling at bedtime. She can’t wait to find a mom, dad or family who will spoil her. Who could ask for anything more??
To set up an appointment to meet Summer, email email@example.com.
It’s a Fresh Prince parody about dog adoption. That’s it. All my dreams have been realized. I have nothing left to live for. Donuts, I think I’ll miss you most of all.
Dog travels 10 miles to find his shelter sweetheart »
This is Jade and Ben. They were surviving as strays in Indiana when Jade got preggers and the Humane Society brought the pair into the shelter. Jade had her puppies and they were soon adopted. But Jade and Ben spent several months in the shelter, even sharing the same pen. Then one day, a young family came in and adopted Ben. They had a three year old child and didn’t think they could handle more than one dog.
But Ben didn’t forget Jade! Three weeks into his new life, he escaped and ran into the night! Ben traveled 10 miles in the freezing cold, over busy streets and train-tracks, until he got back to the shelter! "He came out of nowhere and started licking her through the fence, like they were kissing," the news was told.
Well, what was Ben’s new family to do? Of course they adopted Jade and took them home together!
"They want to be together," said Debbie Floyd, president of the Humane Society board. "There hasn’t been a lot of human love in their lives. They found love with each other and that what’s make them happy. … Hopefully, they will live their lives happily ever after.”
Don’t cry. OK you can cry!
Emergency dog foster home needed in California! Please help! »
On Sunday, this dog was found on a lonely country road near Stockton. She was half-starved and covered in fleas; swimming in a muddy irrigation canal. She was rescued by the kind-hearted folks at Harvest Home Sanctuary, where they cleaned her up and named her Lydia. They’d keep her and adopt her out but the issue is, she’s not great with small animals, and they’ve got a lot of small animals. Plus, they are just overwhelmed and need our help. Lydia’s in need of training but she’s receptive and already knows how to sit. Smart girl!
They need a foster home or adoption miracle right now like never before! These are the people who step up to rescue animals ALL THE TIME, animals that society has neglected and thrown out, and they need our help! There has to be SOMEONE out there who can take Lydia in and show her some love?
If you think you’re up to task, please please please email firstname.lastname@example.org TODAY! She only has a couple days and they are desperate for a good home. Save Lydia!!!
And if you do foster her but can’t adopt, I can promise you that we will feature her on Vegansaurus EVERY WEEK until she has a new home. Seriously, we will get her forever home in no time! She just needs a safe house until then! Or maybe you are that forever home? LOOK AT THAT FACE LET”S GIVE HER ALL THE KISSES.

Another Bay Area kitty needs a home! Check out the details:
Super-affectionate kitty is looking for her forever home. “Junebug” is negative for feline leukemia and feline HIV. She’s spayed, has all shots and vaccines, microchipped and is ready to love you! Junebug is almost three years old and adores sitting on the sink while you wash your face and to be as near to you as possible. She’ll put up both paws to hold your hand close as you pet her. She’ll rub against your legs with her fluffy tail held high and sit on your foot because touching you is most important to little Junebug. A quiet home is best. Indoor home only, please. Small adoption fee.

Help this pit bull and chihuahua dream team, please! JUST LOOK AT THAT PHOTO. »
Reader Lis lives in the Pittsburgh area, and she has a friend who needs to home two dogs, a chihuahua and a pit bull! They are a bonded pair, so if you adopted them, you could get like an AWESOME family with NO work. It’s like you adopted a kid the day they before they left for Harvard on a full scholarship. Seriously, LIVING THE DREAM.
If you’re interested, or know anyone who might be, holler at Lis! Please note: You must be hella responsible and awesome and pay an adoption fee because these dogs are rad and you gotta want them. Plus, when they graduate, they’ll make you all sorts of money and keep you in the softest (faux) chinchilla fur. HERE’S THE INFO:
I am a vegan living in Pittsburgh area and have a friend who lives near me, currently in a predicament. She is in a financial crisis and must move, and cannot stay in an apartment with the number of animals she has, nor the pitbull she has. The issue is that there are two dogs, a pit and a chihuahua, who are a bonded female pair. They must go together, and are some characters! I fostered these two years back, and the problems always was, people either want one type of dog or the other, usually not both.
These two femme fatales are vegan. Nina was an abused pitbull who is scared of her own shadow, and Dutch is the chihuahua who came along and decided she would take Nina under her wing, and thus is fiercely protective of her pittie. The 8-pound gargoyle and the 55-pound helpless princess of the castle. They are darling. We will transport them for the right home ANYWHERE. I put a picture in here just so you can see their true love.
This video is eleven times cray! It’s pretty awesome but I can’t help but worry for the kitty. It’s all movie magic, right? Please? My Mitsy don’t like to be thrown around too much. But when I’m holding her and she wants to get down, I might toss her on the bed or something. The best part is the head-shots anyway though, right? Oh, George! I want to film Mitsy’s head and get to editing like yesterday.
I love the last line about “millions of viral videos waiting to be adopted,” genius.
