Welcome the starting lineup for Puppy Bowl IX!  »

Puppy Bowl is back! We love Puppy Bowl, because puppies + adoption = television GOLD, and we are super-happy to alert you to this year’s starting lineup. The Puppy Bowl IX players are here! Let’s size them up!

My favorites this year are Daffodil, of Harley’s Haven Rescue in Souderton, Pa., because look at THAT FACE. She is like the platonic ideal of That Puppy in the Window and I just want to make her happy.

I am also pretty enamored of Sally, from North Smithfield, R.I.’s Furever Dachshund Rescue. She is long of ear and body, and short of leg, which are qualities I appreciate in a dog.

Finally, ol’ Lenny here, from Gimme Shelter in Sagaponack, N.Y., because he looks tough. It’s hard to look tough when you’re an itty-bitty puppy with tiny milk teeth and awkwardly oversized paws.

Who are your favorites? I’ve never picked an MVP, but that doesn’t matter when you’ve got a football field full of puppies. Puppy Bowl IX airs at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, on Animal Planet.

Update: Blitz is totally going to kick A because her name is Blitz and she’s wild-eyed! -Megan

Aw, Chips: “Too nice” bobcat kitten doesn’t fear humans enough to live in the wild  »

image
Remember little Chips, the bobcat kitten who was rescued after a fire in the Sierras in August? She was taken to Sierra Wildlife Resuce by firefighters whom she was following around, rubbing against their giant boots. Poor little orphan! Look at how tiny she was!

Now she’s a bigger girl, but she’s also entirely too desensitized to humans to live successfully in the wild. She has to learn how to feed and care for herself, and fear humans, because humans are collectively terrible jerks who will not be kind to a friendly bobcat.

image
She’s being desensitized with the help of two other rescued bobcats, Tuffy, who was hit by a car, and Sierra, who was abandoned by his mother. The Sacramento Bee reports the trio will be released in the spring. In the meantime, good luck turning into a proper wild animal, Chips! Get mean, you adorable, beautiful fluffball!

harvesthomeblog:

In honor of your sincere compassion, we created a new video just for you today. Meet the animals you personally helped this year!

Did you donate to Harvest Home in 2012? If yes, look at what you helped achieve! If not, start 2013 right by throwing some money at them. They’re such a wonderful group, and the sanctuary is close enough (to the SF Bay Area) you can visit the animals!

Or go one better and apply for Harvest Home’s winter 2013 internship! It runs from Jan. 14 to March 22, and the application deadline is Friday, Jan. 4, at 5 p.m. PST. Do it to it!

Have you adopted a rescued rabbit, guinea pig, or dog from Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary this year? If so, we would love for you to send us a photo of your beloved companion. Email us at rescue@harvesthomesanctuary.org with your cute photos. Thank you!

Is there anything better than your rescued pet all snuggled up and ready for a long winter’s nap?

SF SPCA’s holiday window display of adoptable animals debuts Friday at Macy’s!  »

Catch the unveiling of the SF SPCA’s annual holiday window display of adorable, adoptable animals at Macy’s Union Square on Friday! Beat back your case of Seasonal Affective Disorder with an eyeful of baby animals who want to be your best friend!

Last year this display led to more than 325 animals finding forever homes, and almost $80,000 for the SF SPCA! Awesome. Also of note:

The SF SPCA needs volunteers to help spread the holiday cheer at Windows by greeting the public, collecting donations, and directing visitors to the SF SPCA pop-up adoption center inside Macy’s. The 2-hour shifts do not require special training. Groups are welcome, and children are invited to volunteer alongside their parents. For details or to sign up, visit sfspca.org/holiday-volunteer or call (415) 554-3008.

Each holiday window will be equipped with a video camera that streams images to sfspca.org/holiday, so you can watch the kittens and puppies from your computer.

For those who can’t make it to Macy’s, the SF SPCA will be waiving the adoption fee on  adult animals adopted from the permanent SF SPCA Adoption Center at 250 Florida St. [from] Nov. 16 to Jan. 1, 2013.

Check out the window unveiling at 5 p.m. on Friday at Macy’s Union Square, at the corner of Stockton and O’Farrell streets in San Francisco. Yes, the darkness encroaches as the winter solstice draws nearer, but an animal companion warms your heart (and lap) even on the coldest nights.

It’s fall! Let’s all dig into some delicious gourds!

Is there anything cuter than a massive feline getting down with a pumpkin? Doubt it.

International political news: Tuxedo Stan for mayor of Halifax! For the kitties!  »

Meet Tuxedo Stan! Although he can’t actually run for mayor of Halifax, Nova Scotia, because of some speciesist Halifax law preventing cats from running for mayor, Stan can raise awareness of the importance of spaying or neutering cats. Also, he and his campaign manager, Hugh Chisolm, are impeccably dressed gentlemen, which we support on principle. I mean, just look at them:

[Can’t see the video? Watch it on Vegansaurus.com!]

You can throw your support to Tuxedo Stan on Facebook and Twitter, and find out all about him on his fine website. According to his bio, Stan and his three brothers were born three weeks after their pregnant mother was rescued from the streets of Nova Scotia. LOOK AT THIS FACE:

Binge on photos of the candidate here and here.

Halifax elections happen on Saturday, Oct. 20. While none of us can vote for Stan, we can vote for his pet cause: Spay Day HRM, which helps “students & low-income families to spay & neuter their cat.” I love political season.
