Mint Chocolate Cookie at Arizmendi Bakery on Valencia! »
GET IT. NOW. It is seriously the best thing I’ve eaten in several weeks and I can eat. I mean, I’ve eaten a slice of pizza since I started this sentence. This is a different recipe than the vegan mint chocolate cookie at the Arizmendi on 9th Avenue and it’s SO MUCH FUCKING BETTER. It’s like the cookie evolved from an pre-oxygen anaerobic life form to Bill Murray (Truly Evolved). It’s been a hell of a ride, folks. Moving on! This cookie is basically a squished brownie with chunks of chocolate just melting out of it. It’s the size of your face and worth every penny of its $2 price tag. Here’s the crappy photo I took but I shoulda just taken a photo of my face afterward because it looked like I’d been making out with a post-binge Cookie Monster. WHICH I WOULD NEVER DO.
Arizmendi just opened on Valencia YESTERDAY so there’s no excuse for you to not be there all the time for their myriad of vegan bread, cookie, and scone options! And like 50 of these marvelous mint chocolate cookies from heaven. Get it, shawty!

» A Fire Inside, aspiring East Bay vegan bakery, needs our help!
If you all had the pleasure of trying the Weekend Ruiner cinnamon rolls at the last SF Vegan Bakesale, you know what a talent Davey Surcamp is. Those massive balls of sugary dough topped with an orangey cream cheese concoction were one of the absolute best things I’ve ever eaten. And I’ve eaten, folks. I’ve eaten.
Well, Davey has some ambitious new plans. He wants to open a vegan bakery in the East Bay, and he wants you to help fund it. Remember when we were all like OMG GIVE MONEY TO MISSION STREET FOOD and they were all OMG VEGAN MONEY EW and we were all FUCK A DINOSAUR DICK and they were all YOU DO THE SAME? Well, that’s like this but all the monies goes to a go-getting young vegan lad who wants to feed you with the finest breads and baked good treats that you’ll ever eat.
He wants to raise at least $35,000 and if he doesn’t, not a penny of your money goes to him. So really, it’s an investment in an investment. And the pay off could be huge, right? Come on, invest in a vegan’s dreams. Don’t buy your seventh scarf this holiday season at H&M, and instead choose vegan pastries. You know you want it, fatty.

We’ve heard from a Friend of Vegansaurus (Hi Karin!), that there are now three flavors of vegan cupcakes available at Cako in Union Square. The three flavors are red velvet, double chocolate, and mocha. HELLO! Karin tried the double chocolate and said it was pretty damn good. Has anyone else been there?! It seems like it might be a good stop after dinner at Golden Era or Lahore Karahi. It’s on O’Farrell at Powell (right off BART! Yes!) and open everyday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., so you Tenderloin-living fat-asses can get your vegan cupcakes pretty much all the time (except between 9 p.m. and 10 a.m., which is fine because those are good times to stay indoors in your neighborhood. That is funny because you live in a crack den lolz!).
UPDATE 10/11/10: Vegan cupcakes are only available special order through Cako now!

Sugar Plum Vegan Cafe + Bakery has opened its doors! This makes it the first all-vegan bakery in Northern California! Not only that, they’re already get great press from mainstream media. ROAD TRIP, Y’ALL!
You can regularly find their treats in San Francisco at Rainbow Grocery but I can’t wait to get at the actual bakery because they’re selling VEGAN NACHOS MADE WITH GARDEIN AND DAIYA. Oh and might I mention an ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT VEGAN BRUNCH that starts Easter Sunday?* I’m sorry, did I stutter?
Sacramento, I don’t care if you’re the crack capital of California and also the whack capital of California, I’m a-comin’ to get ‘cha!
*for all of you who don’t pay attention to Christian holidays, that’s THIS SUNDAY, APR. 4!)

La Victoria Bakery has Wholesome Bakery Treats! »
La Victoria is now selling daily deliciousness from Wholesome Bakery (which will open a retail location in Bernal Heights in April!! Vegan bakeries, MAKING IT HAPPEN!)! This includes stuff like CHOCOLATE TUXEDO CUPCAKES and CARROT CAKE CUPCAKES. Vegan cupcakes DO IT TO ME ONE MORE TIME.
I had this super-weird dream last night that I was sitting in the front room of my apartment eating a delicious cupcake from a new bakery in the Mission when a bullet flew through my front window and lodged in my shoulder. I did not stop eating. Anyway, point is, pretty sure I’m gonna get shot through the shoulder pretty soon because I’ll be eating those cupcakes on the regular. Or maybe I just have some unresolved food issues/should move out of the Mission. THERAPY! WHAT’S THAT! WHO’S HE!?

UPDATE: Cinnaholic now has a STORE FRONT in Berkeley! And It’s open! Go forth and conquer!!
Just look at those sons of bitches. JUST LOOK AT THEM. If you’re not turned on, you don’t have eyes or your eyes should be taken away from you (and given to me! I NEED MORE EYES!!!).
The purveyor of those insane looking things is new vegan bakery Cinnaholic. Its bakers specialize in cinnamon rolls and these things are pretty much everything you look for in a man. Sweet, doughy, and delectable. It also helps if your ideal man is the Pillsbury Dough Boy DON’T JUDGE I KNOW YOU HAVE SOME SHAMEFUL FANTASIES ABOUT DOING IT WITH A SANDWICH. Or is that just the people I hang around? Well, YOUR LOSS.
Cinnaholic plans to open up a storefront sometime soon (FASTER!), but until then you can order from a whole line of custom cinnamon rolls. DO IT. Also, if you want to win a dozen, come to SF Vegan Drinks on Thursday and make it happen. ALSO DO IT.
I’m sleepy. This review has been less than stellar but like, I’m trying to do 50 things at once here so lay the fuck off. I don’t come into your home and break your dishes, OK? OR MAYBE I WILL HAVE TO START. I know, it’s my charming insouciance that keeps you coming back for more. Bye!

Liguria Bakery! »
Liguria bakery in North Beach is one of those places in San Francisco that not a whole lot of San Franciscans seem to know about. Maybe it’s that so many San Franciscans sort of shun North Beach, leaving it to the tourists and the peep-show perverts; maybe it’s that it’s just out of the way. Whatever the reason, vegans in San Francisco would do well to remember its name, because Liguria makes the BEST focaccia bread ever, and it is awesome.

Before you hit up this mythical North Beach bread paradise, however, you should be aware of a couple things: 1) Liguria does pretty much ONE THING AND ONE THING ONLY (though it does it in about nine flavors), and that thing is big-ass pieces of focaccia bread. You can get a slice that’s about the size of a piece of standard copier paper for between four and five bucks depending on the kind you want. It will feed you for a day if all you want to eat is bread (and believe me, you DO). 2) They open early (8 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends), and they close when they sell out. This also tends to be early, so get there before 11 a.m. if you don’t want your trip to be for nothing! 3) The ladies who work here are mean as fuck. I’m sure they’re really nice in real life when they’re not serving the hordes of North Beach frat boy tourists or tourists looking for “The Real San Francisco,” but even if you’re really nice and say “could I please have a piece of the olive focaccia please” with about 80 extra “pleases” thrown in, they will look you up and down with a look of pure hatred and only reluctantly get you your order (which is totally fine with me—I like when service people are able to express their hatred of customers—but if you’re easily offended, you’d best steel yourself). 4) They only take cash, so don’t be that jerk who can’t read the sign and then creates a bunch of hassle for everyone!
When I was there, I had a piece of the olive focaccia and the garlic focaccia, and both were completely insane. I’d been told to try the pizza variety, but I panicked and couldn’t remember if it had cheese on it or not (and didn’t want to ask), so I missed out, but for future reference, I can assure you that the pizza focaccia IS VEGAN—it’s basically tomato sauce on bread. Anyway, the bread is fluffy and soft, but not so soft it falls apart. The edges are a little crunchy in the best possible way, and the toppings are flavorful and generously applied.
There’s not a whole lot else I can say except that it’s definitely worth the trip up to North Beach (grab some xox truffles while you’re at it) and the fat ass. Go get it, vegans!
