The Way Out Cafe in Bernal Heights is having a waffle party and DJ jam session so you know you’ve got to GET UP TO GET DOWN! When? This Sunday, Sept. 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.!
Actually, I think these Waffle Parties are an every-Sunday thing, so put that on your calendar and smoke it! Oh, and they have Earth Balance, fresh fruit, and syrup. Waffles, waffles, waffles WAFFLE PARTIES ALL RIGHT!
Jasmine Tea House has reopened! And they have Sesame Meatless Chicken! »
We love Jasmine Tea House very much, and when it closed, we were very sad. BUT NOW! We can be happy again because it’s reopened! Apparently it’s under new ownership and the mind-blowing Sesame Meatless Chicken isn’t on the actual menu, BUT the wonderful We Built This City let us know that you can order it off-menu! Do that because when you do shit like that, you look like a total boss. I DON’T NEED A FUCKING MENU, SON.
Also, if you are craving the original Jasmine Tea House tastiness, I BELIEVE the old owners currently operate Big Lantern on 16th Street in the Mission. They have some damn delicious vegan dim sum and all kinds of meatless chickens! Plus, they deliver all over San Francisco and honestly, that’s probably how you want to eat it because when you dine in, it’s just a sad flurry of to-go orders flying out around you.
However, if you want to have pretty much an entire restaurant to yourself when you eat, then head to Big Lantern! Actually, I’ve totally talked myself into going to lunch there, I love dining alone! You can gorge yourself AND you don’t have to look another person in the eye—my two favorite things!
Rock Candy Snack Shop in Bernal Heights! Hello, I love you. »
Rock Candy Snack Shop is really cute, and you need to go there! Tons of vegan candies and chocolates and Halloween treats and it’s really adorable and owned by a super nice lady who is specifically catering to vegans so hey, like I said, go there, get fat, get happy, and LIVE YOUR LIFE IN STYLE!
And GET THIS BRITTLE FOR SURE, it’s SO GOOD, G’DAMN:
Maggie Mudd closing: Last day is Sunday, Apr. 3 »
Our worst fears regarding Maggie Mudd’s closure have come true* BUT, owner Michael tells us:
[W]e’re not entirely closing MM but transitioning to an online-only cake service, as we have now. We just won’t be keeping the retail shop. We’ll be rolling out a new website in the next several days. All the old vegan options will still be available.
Since MM won’t be entirely going away, there’s a chance it’ll appear on the street again somewhere. The currently location is really not the best, since it’s so far away from one of its core audiences.
I’ve also had some discussions with one vegan restaurant owner in the area about keeping the product flowing to the vegan community.
So, all hope is not lost! There are still cakes! And still the chance they might open in a new location! Keep hope alive! It’s a major bummer that we won’t be able to hike up Cortland for a waffle cone sundae from a surly teenager, but that’s just one more reason to buy many cakes and support the crap out of them so they’ll set up shop in one of the empty storefronts on Valencia. Maybe even where American Apparel was supposed to go? OMG REMEMBER THAT? Fucking Mission.
Anyway, today we mourn. But tomorrow? TOMORROW WE FEAST! For there are many cakes to eat before we are done, and we are not quitters. I will not stop eating ice cream cakes until it fully funds a new location or I’m buried in a piano box.**
Maggie Mudd character cake (LOVE THOSE THINGS) from digiyesica! Hi digiyesica!
*Probably lots of our other worst fears have come true but this is just about ice cream.
**Preferably face-down on top of Bruce Vilanch! Oh the (mostly awful) jokes we’d tell!
Weekend events spectacular! »
You guys! There are so many events this weekend, we can’t even take it! If we included them with this week’s link-o-rama, the post would be about a mile long, which we cannot inflict on you, so here’s an extra-special events-only post. Have fun, everyone!
Friday, Sept. 24
Farm Film Night at Hayes Valley Farm! Jordan already gave you the details yesterday, but here are the quick details: Event starts at 6 p.m., film, Vanishing of the Bees, at sundown; raffles and snacks; $5 suggested donation. Hayes Valley Farm is located at 450 Laguna St. at Fell Street.
Saturday, Sept. 25
It’s International Rabbit Day! Come celebrate at the House Rabbit Society at 148 Broadway in Richmond! They have all kinds of amusements planned, like bunny-petting face-painting and a Hop Shop sale, and food including a bake sale, snow cones, and a cake walk! It is true, people still organize and participate in cake walks. Obviously, there will be many rabbits present in need of permanent and foster homes, so even if you hate face-painting and snow cones, you should still come out to HRS HQ to meet the buns. Fostering an animal is a wonderful way to see if you’re ready for animal-companionship on a permanent basis.
It’s also the first day of the Great Big Vegan Garage Sale at VegNews! Laura brought you the news yesterday, so here’s the rundown: It’s happening from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 3620 Wawona St. at 47th Avenue, and basically everything imaginable is on sale! Woo!
You can also train to be a Volunteer Animal Disaster Service Worker! This is a series of free classes organized by the SFDCPA, the same group who’s been giving “how to prepare yourself and your companion animal(s) for a disaster” seminars at different branches of the SFPL! The first class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 1550 Bryant Street; register online or by phone at 415/ 970 2024. [via SF Appeal!]
Sunday, Sept. 26
Rocket Dog Rescue is having a HUGE garage sale today at 1569 Custer Ave. from 10 a.m. till it’s over! Come by to support us and get rad stuff! They’ll have TONS and TONS of goodies, including EVERYTHING YOU NEED and more! All the money goes directly to the dogs so you can feel like the good person that you are.
It’s also the second and last day of the Great Big Vegan Garage Sale! Today it’ll run from noon to 5 p.m., again at 3620 Wawona St. at 47th Avenue, and whatever wasn’t sold on Saturday MUST GO TODAY, so get on over to see what deals are left!
Today Cranky Boots Pops will debut at 331 Cortland! The storefront isn’t ready yet, so look out for a “custom paleta cart” from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wunderground predicts perfect popsicle weather, and SFoodie says two of the flavors are vegan (strawberry-basil and peach lemonade!), so if you’re looking for an alternative to MaggieMudd, how about a fruity pop?
Future Events you should prepare for!
The 11th Annual World Veg Fest is just one week away! It’s happening Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2 and 3 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park at 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way. This year there will be a vegan fashion show, which includes designs by Vegansaurus favorite Vaute Couture (highly recommended!); and two rounds of speed-dating, segregated by age (your Vegansaurus feels uncomfortable about speed-dating), in addition to the many speakers, booksellers, food booths, and free samples. Entrance fee is $7, which is waived before 10:30 a.m.
Farm Sanctuary’s 2010 Walk for Animals, Berkeley edition is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 16; participants will meet at noon at the Berkeley Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Center (2151 Martin Luther King Jr Wy.) for registration and some “fun activities,” and the walk begins at 1 p.m. For more information, contact the local coordinators, Karine Brighten and Gina Grega, or register now!
Sticky Toffee Sandwich Cookies with cream filling at Wholesome Bakery.
Now you owe me your firstborn. I’ll name it Borg if it’s a girl, or Sheryl if it’s a boy. The primary rearing will be done by my dog, Hazel. No, it’s for the best.
La Victoria Bakery has Wholesome Bakery Treats! »
La Victoria is now selling daily deliciousness from Wholesome Bakery (which will open a retail location in Bernal Heights in April!! Vegan bakeries, MAKING IT HAPPEN!)! This includes stuff like CHOCOLATE TUXEDO CUPCAKES and CARROT CAKE CUPCAKES. Vegan cupcakes DO IT TO ME ONE MORE TIME.
I had this super-weird dream last night that I was sitting in the front room of my apartment eating a delicious cupcake from a new bakery in the Mission when a bullet flew through my front window and lodged in my shoulder. I did not stop eating. Anyway, point is, pretty sure I’m gonna get shot through the shoulder pretty soon because I’ll be eating those cupcakes on the regular. Or maybe I just have some unresolved food issues/should move out of the Mission. THERAPY! WHAT’S THAT! WHO’S HE!?
Wholesome Bakery to open in new Bernal Heights Marketplace! »
Big news. Wholesome Bakery is looking to go legit. Currently part of the Street Food Revolution, it’s an entirely vegan bakery (on wheels). BUT NOT FOR LONG. They will soon OPEN EVERY DAY FOR US TO BUY DELICIOUS VEGAN BAKED GOODS PRAISE BE in the new Bernal Heights Marketplace. They are shooting to open by the first of the year and we’re all very excited. With vegan bakeries on a race to set up a shop in SF, we all win.
BRING IT, CUPCAKES.
Maggie Mudd bring all the vegans to the yard and their sundaes are better than yours. <-see what I did just there, delightful play on song lyrics and it’s not all gross and blow-jobby like the original but still hella catchy. Delightful.
Those two sundaes are how the pros celebrated Faturday this past weekend. Bow down.
