Last week, with everyone on vacation and news slow, NPR’s Morning Edition deigned to do a two-part series about veganism. Coverage is coverage!
“It isn’t all brown rice and steamed vegetables,” says Renee Montagne. I’m just going to assume she’s pretending to be ignorant for the benefit of her ignorant listeners.
Best part of the interview: two recipes from Bryant’s most recent book, The Inspired Vegan! His black-eyed peas in garlic-ginger-braised mustard greens, and molasses, miso, and maple candied sweet potatoes sound perfect for chilly winter nights. Check them out on the NPR website, or maybe just buy his book, because you know it’s full of good food, and suggestions for excellent literature and music accompaniments.

Adrienne of Crack the Plates is the best, right? Evidence: She runs a vegan meal delivery service out of Atlanta, and this is a photo of one-third of a week’s meals. Look at it! Those smothered seitan medallions are Vegansaurus favorite Bryant Terry’s recipe, and Adrienne reports that all of you must make them immediately, as they are “possibly one of the best things I’ve made all year.” Thanksgiving is coming, you guys! So is the weekend, a.k.a. Eating Days. Let’s make some delicious fall comfort food and wish we lived in Atlanta and could get Crack the Plates meal delivery to our faces on the reg. Vegan-type fun-times events!
The SF Vegan Bakesale location has moved! It’s still happening tomorrow, Saturday May 8 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., but now it will be in front of Herbivore at 983 Valencia St. between 21st and 22nd Streets in the Mission. Be there or be an animal-hating, self-denying jerk!
After the Bakesale, you can protest Thomas Keller’s use of foie gras at the French Laundry in Yountville. The protest begins at 6:30 p.m. The groups will also protest at Keller’s restaurants Bouchon in Beverly Hills at 7 p.m., and at Per Se in NYC at 11:30 a.m. (EDT!). Burned out on Bakesales? Don’t want to cross the Bay Bridge? Maybe check out this mysterious “A Taste For You—Spring Flavor Vegan-Style” with chefs Wanda Crudas and HuNia at the North Oakland Senior Center on Saturday at 1 p.m. instead. The event features cooking demos and snacks (including Souley Vegan and Cafe Gratitude), local entertainment, activities for kids, and costs $15 in advance, $20 at the door. PETA blows it again! Definitely, spending donations to fly a weird, nasty message over Mobile, Ala., was a good use of money. You guys are SO EMBARRASSING, GOD. That said, oil-drilling and fishing are ruining the oceans. Stop eating fish, stop driving so goddamn much, and bring some hair to the bakesale tomorrow to help clean up the animal victims of the Deep Horizon disaster.
And speaking of whom: Popular Mechanics explains how trained volunteers clean these birds. The Audubon Magazine blog has regular, super-informative updates on the wildlife suffering from this tragedy as well.
Some lady—who isn’t a nutritionist, therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, or even someone with a certificate in “food studies” from a community college—would like parents to watch out for their “strict vegan” kids, who are probably suffering from “orthorexia.” Ma’am, you are an idiot; kindly shut the fuck up. Also: would you like a cupcake?
Bryant Terry was on Martha Stewart on Monday! How did we miss this? He cooked citrus chard with raisins and spinach with garlic and chile, both of which sound simple and scrumptious. Yes, Alice Waters was there, too.

Obviously we aren’t going because we’re all blogging for pennies/underemployed and -paid/unemployed losers/neither scientists nor medical researchers (if we were, we wouldn’t be here, suckers), but: PCRM is hosting a two-day educational conference in August on animal testing that sounds amazing—it advertises “a global panel of experts to discuss existing and promising alternatives to the use of animals in research”—and if you are involved in the sciences, perhaps you should attend! And send us a postcard about how great it is.
The only place I’ve seen the Shelter Pet Project commercials is on MSNBC during The Rachel Maddow Show, and they are CHRISTMAS-THEMED. Not enough, you guys. Help get the word out—an adopted pet is the best pet!
The ag industry is SO MAD at the Humane Society and its successes in showing consumers that they can change the industry’s cruelest practices. And though Cargill may not care, we’re happy that HSUS has won its federal case against Hudson Valley Foie Gras, which has been charged with multiple violations of the Clean Water Act.
Mine is now available on DVD, iTunes and Netflix! Buy it for your mom, if you believe in celebrating corporate holidays! You could also buy her a falafel from a Michael Mina restaurant, because it’s (apparently) vegan and moms love it when you spend lots of money on them.
A Canadian guy shot a bear that turned out to be a grizzly-polar bear hybrid. A marine biologist says this is a result of climate change, and predicts there will be more interbreeding between marine mammals as the ice caps melt. Uh, neat?
Guns are the fucking worst. In Oakland last Saturday, some police officers shot a deer to death with their pistols, despite having tranquilizer guns on them. Back in February, on a tip, a SWAT team busted into a Missouri home, shot the family pit bull to death, and shot and injured the family corgi. There’s video, but it’s awful, especially around 3:14 when the guy being arrested realizes what the police have done. Right, and of course the guy and his wife were later charged with child endangerment.
But a Dresdner man “married” his cat of 10 years, Cecelia, because she is already 15 and does not have much longer to live and he loves her very much. An unnamed actor officiated the ceremony. So that’s—less depressing than the police shooting your dogs for NO GOOD REASON. On the other hand, the Florida state legislature refused to pass an anti-bestiality bill, because of stupidity.

Veg Dr. Steve Blake is in the Bay Area, right now! On Saturday, Feb. 13 he’ll give a lecture on Choosing Supplements Wisely at the Institute on Aging in SF. There’ll be a veg potluck for $2 at 6:30 p.m., and the free (!) lecture will begin at 8 p.m. On Thursday, Feb. 18 he’ll speak on Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease at the Smart Life Forum in Palo Alto; he’ll lecture about Healing Medicine on Saturday, Feb. 20 in Pleasanton; and on Making the Journey to a Healthier Diet on Sunday, Feb. 21 in San Mateo. Meet the angriest vegan in the world! Ingrid Newkirk will make an in-store appearance at the Westfield Centre Aveda on Monday, Feb. 22 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. She will read from The PETA Practical Guide to Animal Rights, which you’ll be able to buy from Aveda right there!
The 2010 sf|noir Wine & Food Event begins Wednesday, Feb. 24 and continues through Sunday, Feb. 28. Participating chefs including Bryant Terry (author of Vegan Soul Kitchen), Michele Wilson of Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles, and Michael Law of the Front Porch. There will be vegan food!

Good news: the Humane Society is making vegetarian dog food! Now if your dog has trouble with V-Dog, you have another choice. This food isn’t vegan, because it seems that three micronutrients “may come from animal-based sources,” according to our friends at Pawesome, but it seems like a responsible choice for people for don’t want to feed their dogs murdered, diseased horse. Hazel’s a vegan and she’s the happiest, healthiest dog in the city!
Moby and Miyun Park (of Global Animal Partnership) edited a collection of essays called Gristle! It is about “America’s industrial food system” and it sounds pretty interesting. Granted, contributors include Lauren “I’m a model AND related to those two presidents” Bush, and John “no fat chicks” Mackey, but also Wayne Pacelle, president of HSUS, and we love the hell out of him! We’ll have more on the speaking tour for this book as it develops.
Friend of Vegansaurus’ Paul Shapiro wrote a tidy little article about how the most shocking, obscenely fucked-up practices of the dairy industry aren’t unique incidents but total industry standards. Lay off the dairy, you are contributing to so much suffering.
On the Whole Foods beat, Wal-Mart’s organic, local (because of cost, SHUT UP CAPITALISTS) foods beat all of WF’s organic, local foods in a blind taste-test, except for the chicken, milk, and pomegranates. No problem for vegans! Unaddressed in this article: how Wal-Mart remains The Devil because of its sexism, racism, and exploitation of workers both domestically and internationally. Go fuck yourselves, all of you.

It is really hard to have animal companions in your apartment in Japan, so for the deprived, there are cat cafés! You can have tea and hang out with a bunch of non-fancy-breed, totally awesome cats and feel better about life for as long as you like (approximately $9 US per hour).
Ooh fancy! Emily Gould makes Alicia Silverstone’s vegan cupcakes with Marissa Meltzer. Also they talk about feminism and Riot Grrrl history, which is extra-awesome.
Remember those dudes on the Australian I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here who were sued by the Australian RSPCA after they killed and ate a rat on the show? Well! The Aussie RSPCA dropped the suit against the rat-killers, and instead sued ITV, the show’s producers, who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and paid a fine of $3,000 AU on Monday. See, the rat really suffered before it finally died, and the producers didn’t even know if letting the show’s participants murder it was legal.
Oh, PETA. The organization sent a get-well-soon basket to the premier of Newfoundland (abbreviated “N.L.” in the Canadian press, which is very confusing) after his heart surgery on Wednesday, Feb. 10. Apparently he takes Omega-3 supplements made from SEAL OIL, which officially makes him a disgusting human who doesn’t deserve the fancy vegan caviar PETA sent him.
Dear poachers, you are terrible. A baby gorilla caught in one of your traps died this week, despite having been treated by doctors, on a hillside, in the pouring rain.
Supreme Master is opening another Loving Hut in San Francisco! This one will apparently be in Union Square. You know we have mixed feelings about the particularly wacky branch of the Supreme Master tree that is Loving Hut, but as long as they serve the fried “seafood” plate I’ll be happy.

One of Vegansaurus’ founding editors returned to her hippie college for hippies this week! We’re so proud of her! We also hope she gets lots of use out of PETA’s Vegan College Cookbook, which apparently makes copious use of the microwave. One of my worst cooking-related college memories involves tacos and a grease fire; one of my best involves a vegan pineapple upside-down cake. Tell us your college cooking stories, please! If you are not yet in college, Vegansaurus does not advocate your reading so many swears. KIDDING! Swears are the best.

The European Union is looking to list bluefin tuna on the endangered species Appendix 1, which includes “pandas and some whales;” this would “effectively ban international trade in the fish,” because there are so few of them. Nice job, sushi-lovers. Though should we say, nice job fish-eaters the world over: there is no such thing as sustainable fish at all! Yeah, a total lie.

Adult Dungeness crabs are few and far between for the second consecutive year, but that won’t stop most fishermen from going out to catch as many as they (legally) can. Fishing in a “down” season makes perfect sense, hooray people.

Yobie Benjamin analyzes the most recent reviews of and data on San Francisco’s public school lunches, and determines that, duh, it can be done better, for cheaper. The notable part here is that he includes veg options in his price breakdowns. It’s not more expensive to eat vegan! OK?!!
How revolting: a guy in Cleveland had very poorly hidden the bodies of six women—who had been raped and murdered—“in and around” his house, which is next door to a sausage factory, which some people blamed for the stench. Rotting carcasses stink, be they human or other animal.
In fucked-up and depressing animal news, there’s still one organization associated with the veal calf slaughterhouse exposé that apparently supports the obscene treatment of those baby cows. Unregulated free markets always arrive at the best solutions, right?
The SF Bay Guardian makes a giant effort and reviews Greens. Revelation: it still makes good food. Your omnivorous friends will not complain (too much) about being denied their meat for one meal. Like we were saying, a new restaurant critic with some imagination re: veg food, please.
Our pals at CSA Delivery blog have been killing it with their vegan recipes lately: dolmas with caramelized leek hummus; chard and chickpea burgers with quick pickled veggies; vegetable curry; soft chili tofu. UGH SO HUNGRY.
On Saturday, Nov. 21, friends-of-Vegansaurus Farm Sanctuary are hosting a Celebration for the Turkeys dinner, “designed” by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau! Tickets cost $75 for adults and $35 for children, and are on sale now. Unless you are also a famous vegan cookbook author, this is guaranteed to be a lot tastier than your Thanksgiving dinner, so you might as well go. Plus it supports farm animals, instead of crazy relatives who drink too much/not enough; a pig will never ask you when you’re going to give it grandchildren or if you’ve put on weight.

Compassionate Cooks founder Colleen Patrick-Goudreau is celebrating the release of her new cookbook, The Vegan Table. I just got this book and I LOVES it already! It’s organized in sections to make entertaining easy, whether it’s for two people or 200! I hate how I sounded just there but it’s TRUE. Damn Colleen for bringing out my deeply hidden kindness with her relentless adorability! She’ll be joined by Kellogg Food and Society Policy Fellow Bryant Terry, who is also celebrating the release of his cookbook Vegan Soul Kitchen. The evening will feature a book signing, analysis and discussion of current food justice issues, and samples of their new recipes that demonstrate how deliciousness need not be lost for food to be ethical. This takes place TOMORROW, Tuesday, June 16th at 7 pm at Modern Times Bookstore! See you there, party vegans! Woo!
