Scooter the Neutered Cat promotes a gonad-free lifestyle to save kitties »
Megan Rascal here, on the Ad Beat again. Here’s a super silly commercial for GiveThemTen.org, a campaign to combat kitty overpopulation and euthanasia in shelters:I love Scooter! He will definitely catch some attention and that’s got to be good for spreading the message. I know from past posts that many of us disagree on cats in clothes, but I’m fine with it if the cat isn’t protesting. And Scooter seems super chill.
You can see some behind the scenes shots in this video below. Apparently, Scooter comes from a shelter himself. The shelter said he was unadoptable because he had a serious ‘tude. Look at the boy now!:
Totally chill. And he has a great message because hella cats are killed in shelters all the time. Besides simply raising awareness on the importance of spaying and neuturing, Scooter provides a lot of info about where to get low-cost spay/neuter surgery and will even give your cat a ride to get snipped! There’s also info on TNR and links to kitties up for adoption. So, lots of good stuff on the site.
You know who they need to do a campaign like this for? Bros with male dogs. Because, I swear, I have encountered way too many dudes who won’t neuter their male dogs because of some sort of testicle worship. Bonkers. Are people like that about male cats too? Or is it just a dog thing?
Of course it is to be noted that GiveThemTen.org specifies it wants a no-kill world for cats. And as we’ve recently discussed, most people feed their cats other animals. So, I guess those other animals don’t get a no-kill world. BUT less cats having babies means less cats around to eat other animals. We still win! Yay!
Note: Is “Give Them Ten” a play on 9 lives?? That’s what I’m thinking but not sure. I invite your insight.
Stop eating eggs! For Little Miss Sunshine’s sake! »
Animals Australia has a funny campaign, "That ain’t no way to treat a lady" about egg-laying hens. It’s a cute little play on gender roles. You can see the commercials on the link above but I like this sweet video about Little Miss Sunshine! Look at her looking in the mirror! So silly! I love her!
So what do you say, omnis and vegetarians? Maybe a living being is more important than breakfast?
"Honest Scarecrow" by Funny or Die.
Several people suggested Vegansaurus might want to post that Chipotle scarecrow commercial. I was like…you’re cray. All my advertising friends were immediately taken with the vid and posting it all over fb and I was just like…you’re cray. How can anyone take this seriously? Sorry bros, Chipotle is not some caring, anti-big ag corporation. I like Chipotle, I won’t lie, but come on. Don’t be silly.
Then, finally, one of my ad peoples (Yay Pete Johnson! Speak the truth!) posted this Funny or Die parody. Please, let it knock some sense into the world.
Here I am, on the vegan ad beat again! This time, we have a wacky spot from Silk by agency EVB. I haven’t tried Silk Iced Latte yet, have you? Is it good? I’m not one for iced coffee but it’s about to be summertime. Hot weather makes people go all sorts of cray. Once I start sweating, who knows what I might do! Drink iced lattes! Take a cab five blocks! Hole up in my air-conditioned apartment watching DeadZone on Roku and going straight-up Todd Oldham on the walls with potato stencils and hot-pink paint!
Say word? MTV, VH1, Bravo and HULU? That’s a big deal! What do you think? Is it good enough to represent us on the mainstream stage? Will it turn-off meat eaters or open some minds? Furthermore, do you think advertising in the mainstream media is a necessity or could it be bad for the veggie and AR movements? Or what? Discuss!
Is the world scared of veganism? »
Can’t see the video? Watch it on Vegansaurus.com!
Came upon this video from the Vegan Society recently and I got to say, I’m into it. I know lots of people get touchy when you compare animal suffering to human suffering, but it’s not really comparing the suffering, it’s juxtaposing radical ideas and societal movements people said were improbable or downright impossible. I know it’s also comparing injustices, but it’s not saying such and such is a greater injustice than something else. It’s just like, a faction of people opposed this and were actually able to change things.
People often can’t seem to understand that kind of thing though. It’s like my example* I’ve given in the past, about how it feels to be vegan in an omni world:
They get mad AT ME for being vocal about my veganism, and I’m like, OK, what’s something that actually upsets you? How about sex trafficking? What if sex trafficking was in your face every waking hour and everyone you know and love isn’t just compliant, they are standing in a line leading out of the brothel eagerly awaiting their turn.
I told this to a (very smart) omni friend and she was like, I don’t think that’s a good example to gain empathy from omnis because people will reject the idea that animal suffering is the same as human suffering. I’m like…? I didn’t say the SUFFERING was the same or even similar, I didn’t say anything about suffering at all. I was relating the experience of opposing animal suffering in a indifferent world to something I think most omnis actually do strongly oppose, i.e. sex trafficking. How does that message not make it through? It’s not like I’m calling factory farms the animal holocaust, I’m trying to relate two experiences to build understanding. Sigh.
*Self-quoting is the new reading.
Here’s a commercial from Animals Australia about factory farming. The video is 11+ minutes but the commercial is at the beginning in the very first two minutes (it’s for movie theaters, there’s a shorter version for TV). It’s kind of the craziest thing I’ve ever seen…but I’ll admit, it totally made me tear up. Nothing too graphic, just, like, bittersweetness. Though the rest of the video may be more upsetting.
They are trying to get this commercial to run on TV all over (the world?) tonight! You can help by donating on MakeItPossible.com. Now, tell the truth, did you cry?
Dude, this commercial is so great. Before everyone bitches about how Silk is wack and Dean Foods is the worst, I just want to say 1) I AGREE OKAY? and 2) Still, this shit is just good for veganism. It makes cow’s milk look gross, which it is, and makes almond milk look delicious, which it is. And I kinda want to get in a sexy sandwich with those two dudes, especially the one who looks like Weiner Dog. He’ll be both breads and I’ll be the ranch dip and marshmallow fluff. SANDWICHES DONE RIGHT.
Anyway, I’m not one for the ad beat, that’s all my girl Megan Rascal, but I’d say this is advertising done right, and so let us SPREAD ITS GOSPEL, MAD MEN-STYLE.*
*I think that means we sleep with it and don’t do our jobs and get drunk. I like!
You know me, always on the ad beat! We’ve been following BBDO San Francisco’s awesome anti-puppymill ads for the SF SPCA and here’s possibly the best one yet. It’s a great mix of funny, educational, and macabre. How great is the dog’s depression face? Only second to the depression face every dog in a cone collar makes.
One guy in the comments on SF Egoist is like, “yeah but it’s not the puppies’ fault they were born in a puppy mill! They should get homes too!” Yeah, dummy, after the SPCA raids that mofo and takes all the mommies out of there. But really, of course all dogs deserve a home, truth is though that millions of dogs aren’t going to get one. The dogs in shelters deserve homes too and getting one there happens to fund rescue efforts instead of more animal torture and overpopulation. So, there’s that.
This video is eleven times cray! It’s pretty awesome but I can’t help but worry for the kitty. It’s all movie magic, right? Please? My Mitsy don’t like to be thrown around too much. But when I’m holding her and she wants to get down, I might toss her on the bed or something. The best part is the head-shots anyway though, right? Oh, George! I want to film Mitsy’s head and get to editing like yesterday.
I love the last line about “millions of viral videos waiting to be adopted,” genius.
