Make Dr. Blossom’s vegan sufganiyot for your Hanukkah celebrations! »

Mayim Bialik shared her vegan sufganiyot recipe with PETA, because they’re pals, and it sounds delicious because when do jelly donuts not sound delicious? When you’re dead, I imagine. Unfortunately, PETA didn’t include a photo of these little treats, so we found a couple of other vegan sufganiyot recipes with gorgeous photos, because what’s a recipe without a picture?
The above is of Season of Karen’s baked vegan sufganiyot, a variation on a recipe from Vegan Yum Yum. Below, Inhabitat’s vegan and gluten-free version, adapted from a Babycakes recipe.
Which are you making? All three, right? Happy Hanukkah, let’s eat fried dough and potatoes until we pop!

Vegan Divas: New vegan bakery in NYC! »

If you recall, a few months ago I went to Vegan Divas dessert tasting and had a lovely time. Well guess what? They opened a bakery! Yes, the Upper East Side just got a vegan bakery. Yay richies! Get your vegan on.
They invited me to the opening, promising free desserts and champagne—do they understand me or what? Hint: they understand me. My absolute favorite thing was the baby chocolate cupcakes pictured above. Aren’t they darling (that’s Upper East Side talk!)? And very good. I actually would say their chocolate stuff is their best stuff. It’s always a nice, rich, semi-sweet chocolate that’s not too sugary. Love it. I also like the funny “sand cookies” that are pictured behind the cupcakes. They are funny and I’m not sure everyone would like them. I love them—they are a bit salty, that’s my favorite: salty+sweet.

These donuts are good as well. But all their donuts are baked, not fried, so we’re not talking Ronald’s. Good though. Of course I recommend the chocolate! It’s not surprising their donuts are the baked kind, the whole place is very health-conscious. For those calorie counters, you’ll be excited to find that all the items on the menu include the calorie count next to them—and everything is pretty low. All the ingredients are natural and everything is kosher too. So everybody can eat this stuff! And the prices aren’t bad in my opinion, especially considering the quality of the ingredients.

They don’t just have dessert, they will also be having quiche. I haven’t sampled it yet but I love quiche so I’m excited! And they have juices—see? Healthy stuff! I didn’t try the juice because I didn’t want it to interfere with my champagne intake, but I’m sure it’s good. If you like juice! And it came in cute little glasses. Baby glasses!
Oh the other thing I tried were the peanut butter chocolate chip cookies! They were party favors so I had them at home. I actually had two for breakfast this morning! Yeah, I’m all about health too. The cookies are nice and soft; I don’t like crunchy chocolate chip cookies so that’s perfect for me. They also had oatmeal raisin cookies but I’m allergic to cookies with raisins in them. Ok I’m not exactly allergic but still, raisins better stay away from my cookies.
All in all, a great bakery, especially for the health-conscious set. I’m glad we have another bakery in the city! For you non-NYCers, you can order lots of their products on their site. Bon Appétit! That’s more Upper East Side talk. I’m basically bilingual. Trilingual if you include Philadelphian.

All I want in this life is to try all the delicious fancy vegan donuts the world has to offer. So far, I’ve only ever had Pepple’s. I love Pepple’s! But I want more! These are donuts from Dun-Well, pictured here to make you really hungry and because The Awl has a lovely interview with Dun-Well founder Christopher Hollowell.
We love Dun-Well so much! And we fully support the start of a Dun-Well vegan donut empire. Just make sure you come to the Bay Area before hitting L.A., those guys get all the good stuff.

Hey NYC: Cinnamon Snail is a delicious vegan food truck! »

This is my art director Landen at the moment he realized he brought no cash. Silly Landen!
Yay! I finally got to go to Cinnamon Snail! This New Jersey-based food truck has been making the rounds in NYC and I finally got to check it out when they were in Flatiron last week. Bonus: they were being filmed by the Food Network, so I may be even more famous than I already am! Other bonus: It was raining like cray and kind of hell, but it was like a lil’ adventure!
Let’s get down to business: the food = delicious! I got the special of the day, the roasted tofu pesto sandwich. It was hella good. I forget what my partner Landen got but he was into it. He also got the Mexican chocolate donut. I didn’t get a picture but I got to try it and it was DAMN GOOD! Like, approaching Ronald’s-good. I love all vegan donuts but so often they are cakey instead of soft, tangy, old-school donuts. This donut was old-school and yum. And because I am the nicest ever, I got my other coworker the lemongrass five-spice seitan sandwich and he said it was awesome.

This is a terrible pic of my sandwich; I didn’t have my real camera and the lighting in my office is plain silly. But trust: it was good!
In conclusion: Cinnamon Snail rules! If you want to keep up on when and where Cinnamon snail will be in NYC, follow their twitter!

New York Daily News picks Dun-Well’s vegan donuts as best in the city! »

What up, suckers!!! Brooklyn’s vegan donut shop, Dun-Well, won New York Daily News‘ best donuts in New York!! WE ARE TAKING OVER, fools!
The Daily News also had this to say:
Vegan deserts have a tendency to overcompensate for their limited ingredients and often taste too sweet. Not so for the rich and sumptuous Dun-Well doughnuts, which are, in fact, done very well.
Yuck, yuck. But is that true? I have had some too-sweet vegan cakes but then again, I’ve had too-sweet non-vegan cakes in the past as well. Who can say?!

Vegan maple-frosted donut with homemade “bacon” from Sexy Vegan Mama! Dang, son! Hella cray. Yet, yummy-looking! I’m glad the Sexy Vegan Mama makes her own bacon because I haven’t found a vegan bacon I like. And maple is one of my favorite things. Maple sugar candy was my jam as a kid! Then one New Year’s Eve when I was 17 I drunkenly ate an entire box of maple sugar candy and haven’t been able to shake the bleh since.
Anyway, I NEED THIS IN MY MOUTH.
