LA’s Pressed Juicery to open SF location in Noe Valley! »
Two weeks ago, on a recent trip in a paradise I like to call LA, I hit up one of my fave spots — Pressed Juicery in West Hollywood! While purchasing a mass amount of juice and trying to make small talk with the register dude, I was told two incredible things: that it was their one year anniversary, so I’d be getting 10% off my order and that they were planning on opening up an SF location. I was very excited upon hearing this, but while walking away I couldn’t help but think of the lip service and broken promises we in the Bay Area have been given about getting our own Babycakes and Native Foods, and so I promptly let it go.
However, it looks as though we actually are getting a Pressed Juicery and soon too! Eater SF says it’s going to be in Noe Vally; that the space is already available! I’m not going to hold my breath or anything, but I’m pretty stoked about this — I think my heart even skipped a beat. I’ll be here waiting for you, Pressed Juicery. I love you so!
You’ve got lunch plans: veggie burger power hour! »
Our own Laura has taken over the reigns of Eater SF’s Burger Week and she’s turned it veggie for the day! Enter the Veggie Burger Power Hour! At 11 a.m. Pacific/2 p.m. Eastern, get a veggie burger for lunch and tell the world! When you get your veggie burger, tweet about it with the hashtag #vegburgerarmy! Laura says, “If you can add a picture, that’s major bonus points! I’ll be posting or re-tweeting the most delicious, so your brilliant lunch will be admired by many.” OMG you could be Twitter-famous!

Homeroom, a new mac ‘n’ cheese restaurant in Oakland, serving up a VEGAN MAC ‘N’ CHEESE! »
Oh hellllll yeah. Finally some vegan mac and cheese action up in this joint! I know of only two other places serving vegan mac and cheese in the entire Bay Area: Souley Vegan (some people love it, some people leave it) and Herbivore (If you held a gun to my head and forced me to eat either Herbivore mac and cheese or Hazel’s dog shit, I’d think reallllllly hard. And then I’d eat the mac and cheese but GOOD GOD, it’s the funk). If you know of others, please let a fat vegan know. And further, THANKS FOR HOLDING OUT, BITCH.* Anyway, Homeroom (adorable name) is opening on 40th street in Oakland on Tuesday, Feb. 15 and HOLY SHIT:
I said goddamn, GODDAMN! My only regret in life is that I’m on a fucking CLEANSE FROM HELL** until Feb. 21 and so I can’t partake in this deliciousness on opening day. Oh well; I’ll be there on the 22 with a bib and a dump truck. Let’s do this, Homeroom.

Get busy this weekend! It’s the 10th Annual World Veg Fest, as always at the County Fair Building on 9th Avenue at Lincoln in Golden Gate Park. It runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday Oct. 3rd and 4th, with a $6 “suggested” (strongly encouraged) donation. Come for the free samples, stay for Howard Lyman and Colleen Patrick-Goudreau. Or vice-versa, whatever.
Popbitch directs our attention to Uncharismatic Minor-Fauna, a.k.a., endangered species that don’t get the love and aid that the big adorables do, “just because they look like frightful abominations of nature.” We can’t all be pandas and tigers and pygmy hippos, after all.
After three years, a 12-country, 16-institution team of scientists called the Potato Genome Sequencing Consortium succeeded in their big goal: mapping (or sequencing, if you will) the potato genome! The potato has 12 chromosomes with 840 base pairs (in comparison, the human genome has 23 chromosomal pairs, with 3 billion base pairs). Coincidentally, just two weeks earlier another scientific team announced it had sequenced the potato blight pathogen. Vegansaurus firmly believes that what we need more of is science (and potatoes)—congratulations, potato mappers!
Farm Fresh to You was featured on NPR’s “Morning Edition” this week! Turns out you may already be eating produce from the Capay Valley at your favorite restaurant, which we assume is not Nettie’s Crab Shack, because, ew. (thanks for the link, CSA Delivery!)

KPFA hates vegetarians! No, seriously: Listen to the ridiculous nonsense they aired last week about the “destructiveness” of a vegetarian diet. I KNOW. This is by Lierre Keith, an ex-vegan and author of The Vegetarian Myth, which is just the sort of book omnivores love because it allows them to eat animals and feel morally superior—they’re the ones who’re really saving the environment, not we selfish sissypants vegans and our foolish soft-hearted misguided ways. SHUT UP FOREVER, LIERRE KEITH. Everyone knows you’re wrong.

As usual, we end the week with a trip around the internets!
1. Via Eater SF, it looks like The Usual Suspects is opening up again. The menu looks like fairly boring veg cafe fare. If anyone gets there before us, could you report back? We’re not holding our breath or anything.
2. At Lifehacker, Jackson West tells us how, supposedly, to keep vegan guests coming back for more. As usual, the comments quickly take a turn for the vegan-negative worse. And the post includes a link to a three-year-old article on vegan recipes for your iPod. Surely the geeks at Lifehacker couldn’t have at least done a google search and found the PPK, the 8 billion vegan food groups on Flickr, the Vegan YumYum iPhone app or hell, even adorable us?
3. Speaking of the PPK, they have perfected their Earth-Balance-free chocolate chip cookie recipe. Did you know that all of the Vegansaurs have recently moved or will be moving? We will happily accept these as housewarming gifts. I’ll take 200.
4. Roger Ebert rhapsodizes on the joys of rice cookers. And on a related but weird note, here is a recipe (very easily veganizable) for using your rice cooker as a bread machine, via Comics Worth Reading.
5. Via Foodbuzz, I found a really cool recipe for one of our favorite things: creamy baked pasta with a cornucopia of vegan cheeses (or in this case, two kinds and some faux sour cream). Laura made a similar-looking vegan ziti for brunch last year that I still think about (and that I would like to eat again, please make it!)

New restaurant alert: Loving Hut! »
Via Eater SF, apparently a new vegan restaurant is opening up in Chinatown! It’s called Loving Hut. I took a look at the menu, and it appears to be a faux-meat bonanza, Chinese style, a favorite of the Vegansaurus gang! The dinner menu has a few nods to the “HK-style” Chinese cafe (a Chinese restaurant that also serves American dishes), so it has stuff like spagetti and a “tofu club sandwich” in addition to the standard variety of noodle and rice dishes.
Who are these people? They are the “fastest-growing International vegan fast food chain in the world.” This new Chinatown location appears to be their seventh. The copy on their website is already pretty great. They say: “At Loving Hut, all dishes are prepared free of animal ingredients (vegan) and served lovingly, in a graciously decorated, pure and peaceful environment, giving one a heavenly feeling.”
We will see how heavenly it makes us feel when they open up on Saturday, Oct. 11!
Update: True to form, an intrepid Yelper has already reviewed the place, even though they haven’t even opened! The reviews for their Milpitas location seem very promising, so I’m even more excited to have another venue for fake meat Chinese in the city!
