NYC: Young’s vegan pop-up is back this May!  »

imageHello, friends! I told you I was going to Young’s first pop-up restaurant a few weeks ago but I’ve yet to tell you how it was. It was fun! It was pretty hectic but I assume that will work itself out as there are more events. It was also pretty cramped, so I think when I go back I will bring 3 friends so we get our own table. Otherwise, you share. People were nice though, I just like my space. Oh and the staff was so nice and so amazing! Seriously, our server was so nice and very knowledgeable about the food. But, most importantly of all, the food was yummy! My pictures came out dark so Young’s sent me some of these lovely photos Kate Lewis of my favorite dishes. 

Our favorite dish was the carrot spaetzele (pictured up top)! It was a sweet and savory noodle dish. The roasted carrots on top were a perfect mix of sweet and charred!

Here’s the banana split of Neapolitan ice cream, black cherries and hot fudge. One hundred thumbs up! The chocolate ice cream was so chocolatey, I almost died.

We also loved the smoked hen of the woods mushroom dish but the hummus under it could have been more exciting. I like hummus but I’ve just had so much of it by now! But the mushroom was excellent. I loved the smoky flavor and the texture was perfect.

Get your tickets here! It’s $40 for dinner and then a little more for the beer or cocktail pairing (the beer and cocktail pairing have gone down a little, so I think I will def spring for the beer pairing). I hear tickets are selling out fast so if you want to go, get your ticket asap! The menu looks good! It’s 3 courses and stars fava beans (my favarite!), ramps, and beets. Quite the trifecta!

Los Angeles! You need to get in on this! It’s an event at Mohawk Bend where you get to eat all of Tal Ronnen’s food and then hang out with your stomach out and have the best night of your life. It’s gonna be the most delicious thing that’s ever happened to you or anyone you know, and it’s only $35 and will totally sell out, so you should probably get on it now.

Vegan Iron Chef in SF! Featuring NYC’s Jay Astafa and more!  »

Well you guys, this looks downright fantasmic! It’s a live, vegan version of the Iron Chef! And this time around, Vegansaurus fave Jay Astafa is competing! So if you’re in the bay area, you have to go! Exclamation point!

Here’s the set up:

Theme: Impromptu Sunday Dinner Party for 10!

Chefs will be presented with a 3 basket of ingredients and they will have to make 1 appetizer (in 20 minutes), 1 entree (in 45 minutes), and 1 dessert (in 20 minutes).

The chefs will have access to the same ingredients and equipment, and will have 2 sous-chefs helping them.

So exciting! And Colleen Patrick Goudreau is one of the judges! It’s $30-50 for tickets and word is it will definitely sell out. There is a nice-sounding reception after the winner is announced:

Reception with Miyoko Schinner’s cheeses, appetizers prepared by Well.Fed featuring Field Roast and rhizocali Tempeh, & scoops of gelato by Genuto.

LA: Jamie Kilstein at Upright Citizen’s Brigade THIS FRIDAY!   »

I had the pleasure of talking to Jamie Kilstein on the phone last week and not only is he hella hilarious (and vegan and tells vegan jokes), he’s like one of the most down-to-earth dudes EVER. He also fully admitted that he’s obsessed with Locali’s ”Bad Ass Breakfast Sandwich,” and eats them 3 at a time when he’s in town—we’re like besties already!

If you’re anywhere close to LA, come see him this Friday (March 14th) at UCB for his “No War, No God, No Nickelback” show!! It’s sure to be the best $5 you’ve ever spent, y’all. PLUS, I saw on The Oaks Gourmet sign (2 doors down from UCB) that they now carry vegan Van Leeuwan artisan ice cream! If this isn’t a recipe for a meet up, I don’t know what is!!!! 

Maybe you saw Megan Rascal’s post last summer with one of his vegan bits (wait, did that sound weird to you too?)? This dude is legit funny. His comedy is political, and he talks about  feminism, LBGT rights, veganism, atheism, hating Nickelback… all the good pinko, commie stuff. 

He co-hosts the podcast Citizen Radio with Allison Kilkenny and said he’s received thousands of emails from people saying they’ve gone vegan after hearing him talk about it on their show. Woot!! Clickity-click here to listen to some of the vegans they’ve interviewed. BONUS, he and Allison have a book coming out next fall with an entire chapter devoted to veganism! I will post more info when I get it. 

His favorite vegan spot in NYC (where he lives) is Blossom, where he likes to take his parents (um, how adorable is that!?). He also takes his omni friends there (and pays), as a sneak attack to show them how awesome vegan food is! 

When he told me he hangs out with more “fighters and journalists,” than comedians, I didn’t know what he meant by “fighters” (because, apparently, I fail at thoroughly researching a person before interviewing them). Jamie, um, “plays” jujutsu (what the heck do you call a person who does mixed martial arts?), and is pretty bad ass at it! This seriously influences what he eats (although he clearly makes exceptions for multiple Badass Breakfast Sandwiches when in LA), and he trains TWICE A DAY (which I cannot compute). 

For my hardest hitting vegan news question (tacos vs. burritos?) he said he appreciates how efficient a burrito is, but prefers tacos (which sealed the deal on us being BFFs).

Basically, this guy rules super hard and if you’re in LA it would be straight up silly to miss his show! Check his tour schedule to see when he’s doing a show near you (if you’re not in LA, which is also silly), and follow him on Twitter

San Jose: Bakesale for Pups is March 15th!   »

Yay San Jose! You get your own vegan bakesale to benefit the doggies! My new favorite blog Vegan Dollhouse is behind the event. They make CUTE VEGAN FOOD! Those are my three favorite words and they’re all in a row!

NYC: Young’s next pop-up dinner is almost here! Let’s get down with American vegan food!  »

Young’s, a cool NYC vegan catering company, is now hosting a pop-up series! And the next one is happening March 6th and 7th. That’s soon! 

I had the pleasure of meeting Jessica Young, a founder and the chef behind Young’s. I’m not going to say I’m in love, because you know my heart is made of ice cold stone, but it’s something close to that. 

The event is at Old Bowery Station and it sounds super awesome (because BOOZE):

Sticking to our roots, we will be offering vegetable based menus with an emphasis on American foods. All dishes consist of both a food component and a beer or cocktail component (or neither, if you’re not a drinker).

The beverages complete the dishes - foods are chosen with drinks in mind, and drinks are chosen with foods in mind. We are working with some of the best vegetable-minded chefs and mixologists in the city to create this truly unique experience.

You can get tickets here! It’s only $45 ($65 with cocktail or beer pairing), which is the cheapest pop-up price I’ve seen in this city. So basically, my dreams have come true. 

Also, let’s have a party and hire them to cater! They have an ENTIRE MENU of CANAPÉS for passed hors d’oeuvres. Why do I ever eat food that’s not canapés? I don’t know what I’ve been doing with my life.

NYC: Get a six course vegan dinner and support healthy school lunches for the kiddies!  »

Hi guys! Remember when Meave and I went to Suite ThreeOhSix and had the best time? Well now you can go to Suite ThreeOhSix and have the best time too! AND raise money for the Coalition for Healthy School Food so that the kiddies get veggies at school. I believe we refer to that as a “win-win.”

The six course dinner is taking place a week from today, aka February 25th, aka MY BIRTHDAY. Get your tickets here. Tickets are 100 bones…I know, but it’s a fundraiser and the food is sure to be hella fancy. There will also be a silent auction so you can spend more money. ALSO RAFFLES OMG MY FAVORITE. So go! Eat! Drink! Be merry!

Hella Vegan Eats (our favorite!) are inviting bakers and eaters to boycott the opening of the Sochi Winter Olympics with them on Friday, Feb. 7th at Black Spring Coffee Company (2930 Telegraph Ave, between 30th St & 29th St in Oakland) from 4pm-7pm! All proceeds benefit Queerussia LGBTQ Network outreach & activism! 
EVERYONE GO! Bake some stuff and drop it off! Or go visit and buy all the stuff! It’s for a very worthy cause and plus you know it’s gonna be the most delicious.
Let’s raise lots of $$$ and awareness! See you (and your friends! and family! and frenemies! and enemies! and that dude you picked up on the corner!) there!
