Escaped cow gets sanctuary! »
Aww, his poor ears! Effed.
This is Mike Jr. He escaped from a slaughterhouse in New Jersey on April 10. Eventually, he found his way to the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary! Here’s the story:
[Mike Jr.] eluded capture for hours and even waded into the Passaic River (yuck!). Police used vehicles to ram into the calf in an effort to bring him under control until a tranquilizer gun could be obtained. The story was picked up by local news and in the piece the slaughterhouse owner said he would release the calf to an unspecified farm.
Suspicious of the kind of farm that he might end up at, uber-volunteer Mike Stura, who lives not too far away, called us early the next morning. We agreed we could help and Mike dropped everything to go get the calf. He has a truck and a recently-acquired trailer for just this purpose. It turns out the calf had already been transported to another slaughterhouse (not the “farm” as promised on the news), but Mike pursued it and was able to convince the owner to release him. We named him “Mike Jr.” after his rescuer. We arranged for human Mike to take bovine Mike to a local vet to clear him to cross state lines and treat the wounds and abrasions. After some blood work, vaccinations, and cleaning the wounds, the Mikes were given the “go” to head upstate to WFAS.
Mike Jr. is enjoying his first days of freedom and roaming the pasture with other rescued cows and steer. Rest assured he will never end up at the end of a fork!
We’ve all heard stories about animals that escape from the clutches of the meat industry and find a home at one sanctuary or another. Does anyone else find this phenomenon as odd as I do? Specifically, the part about how the slaughterhouse owner decides the animal deserves freedom because it somehow escaped.
I’m always glad to see an animal get to sanctuary, but it’s so funny that when people see a runaway animal, they react like, “What will and determination! S/he deserves to be free!” I’m just like, “you know that this cow is just like all the other ones that are about to be slaughtered?” Right? I feel like it’s a weird American Spirit thing. Or that this cow has proved itself smarter or more sentient than the others, so it deserves freedom.
What do you think it is? Any ideas? It’s fascinating!
Mike Jr. and his new BFF Kayli! For more pictures of Mike Jr., check out the WFAS page.
A heartwarming update about the Turlock hen rescue! Turns out, the hens love the sun! And spreading their wings! And food and water! Who would have thought.
Goddang this baby goat is cute! And his name is Scribbles? Please. Ridiculous. I need a baby goat! Man! No one ever gives me a baby goat.
You can read all about Scribbles on Farm Sanctuary’s site. Apparently some children were roughhousing with him! Dang kids. Poor Scribbles. Now he’s safe and sound! I love you, Scribbles.
Adele is going to give vegetarianism a go! And we’re here to help! »
Oh-so-lovely songstress Adele is making an effort to go vegetarian! She says that for what’s on the agenda in the year ahead, she has to be “really healthy and stuff like that.” Plus, when she eats meat, she thinks of her dog and sees his little dog eyes. This is incredible news, though of course going vegan would be all the more fantastic. It can be a difficult transition to make, I understand. But, Adele, I’m here to help you. Anything you need, any time of day. Then when you visit San Francisco, I’ll give you the
drinking vegan tour of the city! Or you can hire me as your personal chef, whatever works.
1. I understand you don’t like the taste of tofu, that you go so far as to describe it as “rank.” Tofu is not chicken, this much is true. However, when seasoned well, tofu is delicious! I’ll let you borrow my Tofu Xpress and we can marinate blocks of protein together! You must also read Sarah’s guide to making the most out of a tofu scramble: It will change your life.
2. Faux meat and cheese are your friends during this transitional time. Every time I blink, new ones hit the market. Try them all out to find your faves. You don’t have to like them all, it’s OK. I stay as far as I can from Tofurky deli slices and cheddar-flavored Follow Your Heart cheese.
4. Check out Happy Cow so you know where to eat in every city on your tour. I really should have checked Happy Cow before I went to Reno (as opposed to the drive home), because I subsisted on a salad, a sandwich, and a Lara Bar for two days—not enough food for me. Learn from my mistakes.
5. Barnivore is your new best friend. Use it, download the app, and then go to your nearest pub.
6. Get yourself some vegan cookbooks! Because Vegan with a Vengeance was my first, I am biased in believing it should be every vegan beginner’s guide!
7. I have heard that it is safe and nutritious for doggie companions to go veg as well as humans! You and your pooch can go on this veg journey together, OMG that would be the cutest.
8. Read Vegansaurus! You’ll love us, we are sassy. Like you!
probably will not lose respect for you if you pose for a PETA ad, but personally, I think it’d be amazing if you did work with Farm Sanctuary or Mercy for Animals. Just don’t pull a Ginnifer Goodwin, in which you yell about your veganism only to turn around and bash it on Jimmy Kimmel Live, OK?
Now it’s time for a video, with everyone’s favorite kale-lover, Anderson Cooper! Just kidding; he openly hates kale because like my sister, he has the palate of a six-year-old!
Adele is just stunning in all these clips. Are you getting chills watching her sing? I am!

Smiling piggy in the snow! This is Andy, a Farm Sanctuary resident who seems to be having a gay old time this winter. Let’s all quit our jobs and go play in the snow with Andy! The economy’s already screwed so what’s a few vegans cuddling pigs gonna hurt? It might even help, did you think about THAT, government??!
Andy is Laura’s latest find in the OMFG Pigs are the Cutest category. We spotted this on Susie Coston’s Facebook page, Farm Sanctuary’s national shelter director. Keep them coming, Susie!
Love at Farm Sanctuary! I thought I was hearing things when she said those geese were 25 years old. I had no idea geese lived that long! And they get to spend all their days together. So sweet. I love the pigs best though—you know how I love pigs!
Happy Valentine’s Day to all my animal friends, and you guys too!
A Very Vegan Valentine Gift Round-Up! »
Valentine’s Day is approaching! I may have touched on this in previous years but I’ll say it again: Don’t listen to anyone who tries to tell you Valentine’s Day is some made-up Hallmark holiday! It’s as old as dirt! Look it up, bros.
Now, I don’t think Valentine’s Day has to be some crazy event, I think dinner and flowers is perfect! But if you want to step it up a little from flowers, here are some super gift ideas:
Here’s a sweet treat from Rescue Chocolates, “Wild at Heart” chocolate hearts filled with raspberry ganache! You can find some at Cosmo’s Vegan Shoppe! These are so simple and pretty and the proceeds go to great animal organizations so you’re sweetie will be all the more impressed!
Another sweet gift for a good cause, how much would your main squeeze love a heart full of chocolates from Farm Sanctuary?! SO MUCH! These special “milk” chocolates are fair trade, vegan and organic! Plus you are helping one of our favorite charities (it’s the one and only Eric the piglet’s home!)
This doesn’t need much commentary from me. You obviously need one. Get it from Chocolate Decadence!
Here’s a twist on the traditional candy gift, from Vegan Etsy Team member Feedyourface, Vegan Organic Valentine’s Day Caramels with raspberries, dark chocolate, vanilla balsamic, and white pepper! That sounds YUM with a capital DANG!
Another Etsy candy entry, cute vegan Valentine’s chocolates from MissVeganTreats! I’ve never tried these but they are adorable. I love the skulls! Because they are baddass AND romantic, just like me!
Ok, last Etsy treat gift! This is Iheartveg’s Vegan S’mores Kit: Valentine Edition! I like this because it’s sweets for your sweet but it’s also kind of an experiential gift! Because s’mores aren’t just a food, they are an activity! So you can give your sweetie the kit and then make them together! Ohhhhh, maybe over a campfire! Romantic! Jeez, you’ve outdone yourself.
Lingerie, whether you plan on wearing it for your lovey or giving it to your lovey to wear, is a crowd-pleaser! And this set comes from vegan lingerie shop Purrfect Pineapples and has little white hearts on it. So romantic!
Don’t forget the appeal of an old-fashion card! Only old people give out cards any more and old people are the best so you should give out cards and be like an old person. This cutie cute cute one comes from Vegan Etsy Team member MyZoetrope. You know what would be cute? If a BOY got this for someone! Boys never give cards. That would be adorbs. You guys should do that.
Experiential gifts are all the rage in the past few years, simply because a lot of us just have too much stuff! And really, isn’t it memories that build a romance? At least that’s what I hear. So here’s an idea: get tickets to Urban Food Crawl’s “Suds & Sweets: An evening of beer and dessert pairings” in LA! There will be mini vegan cupcakes and truffles paired with a beer flight! So fun! And nothing stimulates a romance like beer. If you don’t live in LA, you should still totally get tickets to this AND get plane tickets to LA! That would be awesome. I would totally marry you if you did that for me. Or not marry you; Whatever you were going for, I’d be down!
That’s all for now, pals! Have a happy Valentine’s Day and hug your lovey for me.

Our Hen House has a new Art of the Animal video! Check it out!
The Farm Sanctuary has two new babies! And they need your help! And they are cute!
This is the sweet rescued baby goat we read about yesterday. She saved her mom from slaughter and now they are both safe and sound at Farm Sanctuary! They gave her a green jacket! Dang, homegirl looks good in green. I love her expression here! She has a little joke in her head.
Heartwarming story time! This little baby goat saved her mama’s life! Now they are both living the sweet life at Farm Sanctuary in New York. Look at that cute lil’ pink nose! Who could hurt that baby? I hope they name her Jesus. Little Jesus, the baby goat. Actually, if this is what Jesus looked like, I’d be hella religious.
Now, let me tell you the story of this mama goat and baby goat so you can cry and then give Farm Sanctuary all your money. This mama goat was bought as a “spent” dairy goat and was sentenced to slaughter (because that’s what happens to animals used for dairy, after they’ve used them up, the dairy animals get killed just like any animal raised for meat). They had no idea she was preggers! Then, bam! Baby goat time! As Farm Sanctuary says, “after witnessing the birth and the tender devotion between the mother goat and her child” the owner decided to save them and find them a good home, at Farm Sanctuary!
Awww. But that is not the end of the story! When Farm Sanctuary got to the slaughterhouse to pick up the mom and kid, they found another goat had just given birth! Surprise! The slaughterhouse owner decided to let this pair go to live at Farm Sanctuary too. Unfortunately, that baby was premature and now the baby and mama are both sick. You can help! Make a donation today! Let the babies have a nice, warm holiday, at least these two. Look at you, so caring and compassionate, you’re basically one of the three wise men. Or whoever it was that let Mary have her bastard in their barn. You’re that person. Merry Christmas, baby!
