You know what’s awesome? Millennium, duh. What else? Learning to cook like the super-talents at Millennium. So how about taking the next Millennium cooking class?
On Sunday, June 24, Millennium hosts “Porcinis, Cherries, and Early Summer Produce.” Plus, Chef Eric Tucker will take you on a Ferry Building Farmers’ Market tour on Saturday, June 23, so you can “contribute to Sunday’s menu by picking out the most enticing and much awaited summer produce fresh from local farms.”
Sounds good, right? Produce-shopping happens on Saturday from 10 to (around) 11 a.m. at the Ferry Building, and the class itself is on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Millennium kitchen. Tickets are $160 per person—OR $145 for Vegansaurus readers, just mention us when you call!—and you can buy them by calling Allison at (415) 345.3900, ext. 13. Allison says that this would make a cool Father’s Day gift, which reminds us of that ever-applicable aphorism: Buy a father a dinner, feed him for a day; teach a father to cook gourmet vegan fare, feed all of you for a lifetime. You know!

OK bakers, let’s do this! Pie or Die!…Part Deux is coming to San Francisco, courtesy of SF Food Wars. It’s being held at the Ferry Building and they are looking for competitors! Pull out your aprons, your oven mitts, your rolling pins and get to work! Be creative, be classic, I don’t care, just make the best vegan pie of your life! (or, pies? You must make enough to sample out to at least 70 peeps.) Enter to compete here.

Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, Apr. 6, the Upper Haight Farmers’ Market is back in business! Time to get your seasonal produce on, my people! One of the lovely organizers, Meghan, says the following about available vegan selections:
We are going to have lots of vegan options again this year: Scream Sorbet, East and West Afghan Food (everything they have is vegan except their yogurt dip), Gorilla Pete’s Hot Dogs will have a vegan sausage,* Flour Chylde Bakery has vegan kalamata olive bread, Montclair Skincare—all their products are vegan! Sinbad Restaurant and Grill has wonderful vegan salads and meals, and finally all the wonderful produce
The market will run from Apr. 6 through Oct. 26 on Wednesdays from 4 to 8 p.m.

Non-weekend summertime super-fun activities! »
It’s summer! Time to play while it’s still light at 8 p.m.! Or so the kids who live next door and have no school think, as they are up and at ‘em 12 hours a day, running in the sprinkler, riding bikes, playing “let’s wash the car” (not my car, not my game, I am honest with children about work)—they make the most of every second of their summer. And even though statistically (one of us pays attention to these things) you are a boring adult who gets no extra time off for longer days or warmer weather, and maybe are even the person responsible for those giggling children who have to be occupied all those hours they’re not in school, in which case I extend my sympathies to you. But you’re still alive! You can still eat summer produce, and wear summer clothes, and drink summer drinks, oh yes you can.
You can also go to the movies. Specifically, movies about produce, which is almost pertinent, but who cares that is not the point. First, tonight at 7 at Hayes Valley Farm catch a free!! showing of The Botany of Desire, based on Michael Pollan’s eponymous book. This was the pre-food-evangelist Michael Pollan, so there’ll be no rapturous tales of hunting boar in the Berkeley hills or wherever. Rainbow Grocery will provide hot chocolate, Jugtown Pirates will play (if you are into bluegrass you are excited right now.), and there will also be a bake sale and raffle. Right, and they have a $5 suggested donation, so if you are nice you will pay, but if you’re broke, it’s all right not to. Hey check it out, there’s a free movie on Thursday, too! And this one is a preview AND it’s at the LIBRARY. YOU GUYS. You know your Vegansaurus loves the library like whoa, right? We love the library so much. Particularly the SFPL, it is a really lovely library system. So lovely, in fact, that they’re showing a documentary called Fresh three months before its official San Francisco debut, and because it’s the library it will cost you zero dollars—all you have to do is show up at the Koret Auditorium inside the Main Library, at 100 Larkin St. at Hyde and Market Streets. The movie will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Hang on, you’re saying, what is this Fresh about, why should I go anywhere on a damn Thursday when I’m exhausted anyway? Oh man, OK. From what I understand, it is “like Food, Inc. but inspirational, not so depressing”; plus, it costs no money; plus, you’ll just have time to get dinner at Ananda Fuara afterward. Hang on: Here is a review from reader vera! Now, no more arguments!
EXCEPT! you might say, except what about the inaugural Mission Community Market, which is also scheduled for Thursday, from 4 to 8 p.m.? Well that is a good point. You might could do both, really; two hours for the market, on Bartlett Street between 21st and 22nd Streets, and then, what, not even 10 minutes on BART to Civic Center and you get your free movie at the library, too! See, your Vegansaurus has your week all set for you already. We haven’t heard—nor can we find—any solid information on the food vendors at the MCM, but they say there will be a farmer’s market, which means more summer produce! Regardless, if you’re in the Mission (which like 30 percent of you are, we know), get over there and support your community. Be a good vegan citizen. Also leave the house, get some vitamin D, talk to humans with your voice, et cetera.
We are helpful because we love you! Go out, vegans; eat hay while the sun shines.

The geniuses at the Idaho Department of Fish and Game have decided that migratory pelicans are ruining everything—i.e., eating all the native and artificially stocked trout that people want to fish—and because the Feds won’t allow them to shoot the birds, they are going to release non-native badgers and skunks into the area to deal with the problem “naturally.” Not everyone agrees that it’s the pelicans causing the decline in the trout population, and letting non-native species out into the wild hasn’t always (ever?) gone well in the past, but fuck it, people want to fish for their motherfucking trout.
Whoops, pescatarians! Watch out for that ahi tuna from Hawaii, it’s full of salmonella! Better stick to a delicious lion and antelope burger from Sacramento. God knows what kind of “lion” it is or how the proprietors can say it’s from the U.S., but hey, this “article” is 50 percent cut-and-pasted quotes from Facebook, so who knows anything? And anyway exotic is the new cute-n-cuddly, right?

The Out of Place art show at SPACE Gallery (1141 Polk St. at Hemlock Street) tonight, Friday Mar. 12, features your Vegansaur Jonas! It costs $3 and runs from 8 to midnight, and will be catered by Black Orchid Bakery. Is there enough culture in your life? Probably not, you philistine, so get over there and appreciate some damn art.
On Saturday, Mar. 13, you can attend “The Nutrition Prescription” lecture by Donald Forrester, M.D., presented by the San Francisco Vegetarian Society, at the Institute of Aging at 3600 Geary Blvd. (between Arguello Boulevard and Palm Avenue). The lecture begins at 8 p.m. and costs $10, or participate in the veg potluck at 6:30 p.m. and pay just $2. Contact the SFVS for further information.

Did you know that East Asian people eat CATS and DOGS? How SAVAGE!! The Chinese government is at present “considering legislation” to ban eating these particular animals, which is probably good considering how awful their living conditions are prior to slaughter. It of course does NOTHING for the rest of the animals raised for consumption in China, but as long as our precious puppies and kitties are protected, we can all sleep at night, right?

Delightful Ruben Studdard went vegetarian 18 months ago, switched to a vegan diet six months ago, and lost 100 pounds! Man, when I went vegan for keeps I lost like zero pounds, WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME, AMERICA, WHY DO I STILL HAVE FLESH ON MY VEGAN BONES?? Product Review: East & West Gourmet Afghan Food and the Bolani! »
East & West Gourmet Afghan Food is a local company that makes these great bolanis. A bolani is a stuffed flatbread and it’s SUPER and VEGAN—yay! I happened upon this little meal when I was walking around Whole Foods one day and I walked by this guy who was set up with a little sampling table and whatnot. He was like, “want to try some blah blah blah?” And I was like “no.” He got all persistent so I was like, “No thanks, I’m vegan.” He’s like, “this is vegan!” That’s how they get you! But yes it was vegan so I had to try some and then the guy was totally all, “you should listen before you say no to something.” Megan Rascal: “I don’t know if that’s true.” What is true: I don’t like dudes I don’t know telling me what I should and shouldn’t do. Homeboy was lucky the bolani tasted good—otherwise, who knows (Pow! Right in the kisser!)!
They have four different kinds of bolani: spinach, potato, lentil and pumpkin. Thus far, I’ve only had the lentil because I was trying to be healthy-like. I would have gotten the spinach one but it’s never in stock! According to their website, spinach is the most popular bolani. However, the lentil one does have a bit of a spanakopita taste to it anyway which is great. I heat it up for 30 seconds in the microwave, but you could also toast it or whatever. It’s a free country.
The bolanis are a bit dry but have no fear! East and West Gourmet Afghan Food makes sauces too! How convenient! And seven of their eight sauces are vegan—more yay! I’ve been getting the bolanis at Whole Foods but they are also available at a bunch of farmers markets' throughout the area—

Island Earth Farmers’ Market shut down by Board of Health!? »
According to friend of Vegansaurus, Kim (Hi Kim!), The Island Earth Farmers’ Market at the Metreon had all their hot food vendors shut down by the Board of Health today. Those mothers don’t play. It’s apparently some kind of permitting/bureaucratic crackdown (and not a health code violation! Phew!).
One of the vendors told Kim that there’s some kind of appeal meeting tomorrow. Trying to find out where it is because I’ve been quite enjoying that market, 3rd World feel and all.

Farmers Market Thursdays can make a work-week. The Crocker is attached to the Hunter Dulin building, a.k.a 111 Sutter (one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, incidentally), which makes it ridiculously convenient for the suits on the West Coast Wall Street, and because it’s so small, the nice vendors don’t have to make much of an effort to get to know you. The people I used to buy my bread from whose name I cannot remember—they do French-style breads and pastries (god how I lust for those little croissants) (damn you real butter)—they would remember what I want, and we had silly running jokes, and it made me happier to buy from them.
I think that the produce selection is very good. Yes, it is smaller than other markets, which to me is a selling point. You can see everything and make good choices without feeling overwhelmed or rushed. Everyone I’ve spoken with has answered my questions, and helped explain plant items with which I was not at all familiar. For example: yam greens. I neither knew that yams had greens, nor that they were edible. According to the vendor, they are a little bit sweet, and indeed they were.
The blueberry sellers have excellent blueberries. The summer fruits look delectable, and I never had a bad one. Prices are cheaper than supermarkets, although how they compare to the bigger, more popular markets I cannot say, being a lazy person who preferred the convenience of taking an elevator and walking 50 steps to the market each week. This was before the days of my CSA, of course. Now I shop farmers markets to supplement what the farm doesn’t bring me.
The size of the produce isn’t frightening, either, which I think is a big selling point. When melons made their first appearance, the cantaloupes were exactly what I expected cantaloupes to look, feel, and smell like. The Crocker farmers market is smaller than Heart of the City, and it’s only once a week, but I think the quality of the the produce is higher, and nearly everything is organically grown as well. If you are anywhere near the Crocker Galleria on Thursdays between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., you must check it out. At least get an apple or a peach (depending on the season, of course).
Ultimately this place is great. I would like it better without the salmon guy always hassling you to eat his fish carcass, and some of those office ladies can be extremely pushy around a table of vegetables; those are personal irritations though, and don’t reflect at all on the high quality of produce and friendliness you get at this market. Buy a bunch of greens you’ve never tried before, and spend a little too much money on the homemade applesauce, because it is delicious and you won’t find it anywhere else.
