We’ve heard from a Friend of Vegansaurus (Hi Karin!), that there are now three flavors of vegan cupcakes available at Cako in Union Square. The three flavors are red velvet, double chocolate, and mocha. HELLO! Karin tried the double chocolate and said it was pretty damn good. Has anyone else been there?! It seems like it might be a good stop after dinner at Golden Era or Lahore Karahi. It’s on O’Farrell at Powell (right off BART! Yes!) and open everyday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., so you Tenderloin-living fat-asses can get your vegan cupcakes pretty much all the time (except between 9 p.m. and 10 a.m., which is fine because those are good times to stay indoors in your neighborhood. That is funny because you live in a crack den lolz!).

Pepples Donuts are now open in the Ferry Building! They’re inside and all the way down at the end (um, the end that’s closest to the bay bridge). They have a small selection of cake and raised donuts and WOO! VEGAN DONUTS IN THE FERRY BUILDING WHAT WHAT!
I don’t know about you all but I’m about to set up shop until a donut asks me to date him and then we’ll get married and have half-human/half-donut babies and I’ll eat my young because that always made sense to me. DONUT BABIES WHAT WHAT!

Financial District foraging: Stone Korean Kitchen!

You’ve probably seen it on the Yelp or the Groupon, but Stone is a semi-new Korean place in Four Embarcadero (right on Justin Herman Plaza by the fountain, and with outside seating, too) with a young-ish, hip-ish vibe. At least as compared with the gross-ish Japanese place that used to occupy the space.

Anyway, I dig it. They have a great happy hour (two for one giant bottles of Korean beer!) and some delectable snacks. Including these, the Duk Kochi (crispy rice cakes with spicy sauce and sesame seeds): they are like little savory fried rice marshmallows with hot sauce on them. Leave your depressing-ass office RIGHT NOW!

YOU GUYS. I had lunch at The Plant Cafe at the Embarcadero today and per usual, it was the mickey fickey bomb. But that’s not the weird part. THE WEIRD PART IS THIS: I get home and look what Fancy Nancy sent me! A motherflipping recipe for THE PLANT BURGER.
SAY WHAT!?!??!??!?!!?
If you’ve never experienced the magic of The Plant Burger, you are a sad soul. Make this tonight because I will also be making it and we can be internet besties OMG YES. Also, seriously, this is the best thing in the universe and even my meat-eating dad who would kill a piglet with his bare teeth just to watch him die (hi dad!) loves this thing. For serious DO IT.

No, I didn’t trap Slimer and put him in a cup (asshole!), that’s the vegan Avocado Milkshake from Frog Hollow Cafe in the Ferry Building. It’s THE BOMB; it’s rich, creamy, sweet perfection in a cup. Filling and oh-so-delicious, you’re a damn fool not to pick one up for lunch and sit on the bay and watch seagulls shit on tourists OMG FUN.
In addition to the milkshake, they have a rotating menu of salads, sandwiches, and stir-frys, all of which are vegan or can be made vegan. Also, a tall-ass birdie told me that they are thinking about adding some vegan pastries to the mix too. MAKE IT SO, FROG HOLLOW.
If you’re stuck working for a living (sucka!), you might as well get some kicks while you can. I mean, we’ll all be in the ground soon, ya know? Cheers!

NEWSFLASH: Plant Cafe is open at 101 California!!

I know this is exciting news for nobody but me because our readers all have twee creative-class jobs like “writer” and “pop culture strategist” and work in airy Dogpatch lofts (or at home in their sweatpants and own filth), but for everyone who slogs to their depressing-ass desk job in the bizarro world that is the Financial District, PLANT CAFE IS NOW OPEN AT 101 CALIFORNIA! I reported on this previously and promised to follow up as soon as they opened, so here’s your follow-up. I owe back taxes and I’m living in piles of unpacked moving detritus, but I am bringing this information to you efficient-style, because it is clearly Very Important.

Some things to note about this location, vs. the Pier 3 location which was previously the closest to my office (though still too far to walk over, wait 45 minutes for food, and walk back in under an hour):

There’s a bit more of a focus on prepared to-go foods, which is probably the right call, since the prevailing culture down here in bizarro world is picking up your depressing processed foods wrapped in plastic and eating them alone at your desk. Except now, you can be enjoying delicious salads out of compostable plastic containers with this amazing creamy dressing (vegan! made out of macadamia nuts!), “sprouted” bagels with almond butter for breakfast, and the famous Wasabi Burger (GET IN MAH BELLY.) It looks a little more like an airport, maybe because of the to-go focus and the fridge cases, or maybe because the menu is projected on flat screens like departure times.

Yes, they do have the amazing Plant Burger on the menu at this location. I’ve only been once (this morning, for breakfast, where I ate the sprouted bagel and the salad), so I can’t comment on the lunch scene but I will definitely be back. Maybe not every day, because I’m trying to save money in 2K10 and DANG THIS PLACE IS HELLA EXPENSIVE.

But the value of good, whole, delicious foods and fresh juices in this location is priceless, so the portion of my budget that does go to prepared lunches will now be going only to this Plant Cafe.

Updated: Island Earth Farmers Market!

Hey you guys! There are big things happening inside the Metreon with Island Earth Farmers Market, and when you hear it, you will flip.

First, the market has expanded! They’ve got new vendors, including Kingdom Cake, a cupcakery whose menu lists five vegan flavors: vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, coconut, and basil lemon blueberry; All Star Tamales, with a “vegi-vegan” tamale; Vn’V Momo, with a veggie momo (yes please); Soleil’s African Kitchen, where it would appear a vegan could eat chef Soleil Banguid’s fried plantains (maybe the beignet de banane? That life should be so fair); and El Porteño, where the humita Argentinian empanada appears to be animal-free.

Secondly—and this sounds pretty terrific—Island Earth has introduced what they’re calling “Curb to Your” service, which is basically just what it sounds like: you shop at the farmers market, leave your purchases there, go about the rest of your day/errands/whatever, and call when you’re ready to pick up your stuff. Apparently “they” will bring all your purchases out to you, “without the shopper having to leave their car”! AMAZING! That is some convenience, there. Is the produce worth it? Are the new foods? Vegansaurus will find out for you, though probably not in a car. I don’t suppose “they” would bring your bags to a bus stop or Muni/BART station—yet.

From our lady about town, meganallison:
I am eating a delicious cupcake with peanut butter frosting! The new Plant Cafe is going to be a valuable addition to my downtown life!
The new Plant Cafe is located at Pier 3 in The Embarcadero. GOD, Plant Cafe, can’t you open in a neighborhood that isn’t the worst? The Marina and now the FiDi? This shit is evil.

Island Earth Farmers’ Market in the Metreon!

The Island Earth Farmers’ Market opened on May 15th in the Metreon (in the old Discovery Store space) and we hear that it has tons of vegan options, from vegan dim sum to vegan Afghan food to vegan pastries to an entirely veganfalafel stand! Has anyone been!? We’re gonna check it out tomorrow and want a heads-up on what to pig out on and what is funk nasty.

Expect a full report on the deliciousness or non-deliciousness of the Island Earth* Farmers’ Market after my stomach is pumped tomorrow. THE THINGS I DO.

*Island Earth? WTF? Sounds like a cult. Or a drum circle filled with dreaded (literally and follicularly) white dudes.

Update! So I’ve been twice now and these are my thoughts:

It has kinda has a third-world bazaar feel to it. This is both good and bad. Mainly just kinda weird. Now let’s get down to why we’re here, THE EATS! Vegan selections include juices, smoothies and other vegan snacks from Juicey Lucys, outstanding plantains from Soleil’s African Kitchen, many dim sum choices from the organic dim sum place (but pricey! ranging from $1.50-$2 a piece!), this flat, crepe-like bread from Bolani that’s stuffed with ingredients ranging from pumpkin to potato to spinach to lentils! Delicious and you can buy a container of dips, sauces and spreads too and most of those are vegan. Alive vegan raw foods has a stand with salads, sandwiches and more! Panorama Baking has a booth with lots of vegan loaves that were really inexpensive, I got a huge loaf of rosemary bread for $3! I didn’t see any vegan pastries but there is a chocolate place near the entrance to Yerba Buena Park called Vice and they had several vegan candy bars…I got the dark chocolate and sea salt and it was EXCELLENT! Oh and an all vegan falafel cart with very good falafel! They have two sizes, a large one for $7 and a smaller one for $4.50! I had the smaller one and it was plenty big, especially after sampling everything else! I am a glutton! Oh and a few fruit and vegetable vendors AND an outpost of our favorite San Francisco Herb Company! Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area. Limited seating but you can go into the park when it’s nice or I’m sure loiter inside the Metreon when it’s crappy.
