Loyal readers will remember both Laura and Jenny going apeshit over this stuff a couple years ago. It’s delicious. And now the gluten-haters in the crowd can enjoy it too.
According to a press release, the company is switching from using wheat flour to oat flour in their entire line because it just actually tastes better. That’s a refreshing development. 
Expect it in stores, with a new label, in November or so. Imma stock up on some corn chips and salsa and pig out, you’re invited.

Ever since Mark mentioned the Alicia Silverstone video in which she feeds her baby chewed-up food from her own mouth, I have been unable to contain my curiosity over it! I thought that today was the day I could finally muster up the courage to watch it.; BUT NO! I turned it off before I could get to the feeding. I just can’t. By the way, I would be so pissed if my name were Bear I found out my mom did this (my mom licking a finger or napkin to wipe my face as a kid was bad enough)!

Now the feeding is forever on the internet for Bear to be plagued with; why wasn’t Alicia thinking about the 12-plus years of schooling he’ll have to endure?! Maybe he’ll be home-schooled? OH NO, WHAT IS LUNCH GOING TO LOOK LIKE?

Anyway, I get Alicia’s Kind Life blog updates in my inbox, ever since I became a member when she named Food For Lover’s queso an awesome vegan snack! Over the weekend I got an update I though you crafty, hippies beautiful people would love: how to make your own laundry detergent! It’s kind of a process (though it doesn’t look difficult) so click here to see how to do it! All you need is washing soda, borax, three gallons of water, a bar of soap, a large bucket, and time! And because I know you like a second opinion on matters concerning your clothing, here’s another detergent recipe from Bonzai Aphrodiate.

The only time I’ve made my own household cleaner is when I used baking soda and vinegar to unclog a drain. It works! Maybe this will be my new thing — making all my cleaners, along with my dinners, from scratch. Then I’ll start sewing all my own clothes, sell all my possessions and move to a hippie commune! I did need some new life goals.

Look, everyone! It’s Jessica Simpson eating vegan onion rings on the Ellen show! And she’s about to burst! Were you on the edge of your seat wondering if she’d give birth on this segment? I was.

If you aren’t able to stomach the idea of watching this video in its entirety, you can skip to the 1:44 mark. Ellen unveils a bunch of vegan snacks for Jessica and then they discuss Gardein. Oh, Ellen! When are you and Portia opening your vegan restaurant in LA?

Here are a few things I took from this interview:

  1. Jessica Simpson knows what a vegan is. That surprised me.
  2. Ellen, if Jessica isn’t interested in your Gardein products, I am! I will enjoy them to the fullest (and probably all at once).
  3. What is a snoogle?! This is the first I’ve seen and I’m intrigued!
  4. Ugh, being so pregnant looks uncomfortable. Not interested! My sister will look like that in September and I shall ridicule her if she cannot pull off eight-inch heels (No I won’t! Neither of us could pull them off EVER, let alone when she’s 8.5 months pregnant!). I bought her some Food For Lovers queso, but she said the morning sickness makes Mexican food sound horrendous. No, sis: I know the baby wants it. Like all the vegan treats I will impose on him/her in the future! Being an aunt will be spectacular!

I just don’t feel like making snarky comments about Jessica Simpson. Maybe the idea of making fun of a massively pregnant woman seems too harsh. Plus, I think she’s kind of adorable and charming pregnant. Don’t worry! I kind of hate myself too.

Vegan Mofo: Chili cheese dogs!  »

It’s Wednesday night—what’s for dinner? Something quick and tasty, cause you are probably tired from work or school, or whatever it is you do on hump-day (I had the day off and I’m soo tired from lounging and watching Mad Men). Don’t worry, I got you covered. Vegan chili cheese dogs—yes please and thank you!

1 to 2 cans vegan chili
1 Tbsp. BBQ sauce
1 package of your favorite veggie dogs (I like Smart Dogs)
Cooking oil
Green onions
Vegan cheese (I used Daiya)
Fritos (optional)

I like to fry up my hot dogs (Health food? What’s that?). I heat up some veggie oil in a pan, slice my veggie dogs in half and cook them til they are bubbly and ever-so-slightly charred on all sides.

While that’s going on, heat up your chili. I like to add BBQ sauce to mine. If you haven’t tried this before, OMG IT’S AMAZING.

Once everything is heated through, put your dog and your chili together!

Next step: vegan cheese, of course! I used Daiya on mine, but Nacheez or Food For Lovers Vegan Queso would be perfect as well.

Chop up some green onions and sprinkle them on (you are so gourmet!) Do what you do with buns, toast them or whatever—I fear carbs (so mid-’00s, I know) so I stay away.

My bun-less dog. I probably should have let the cheese melt, but sometimes when you’re hungry you don’t make the best decisions.

My roommate Crystal’s dog. She does not fear carbs and therefore NOT ONLY used a bun, but loaded hers up with Fritos.

I was on a mission. A mission to gorge out elegantly eat every new vegan cheese on the market. For you! My most unselfish venture ever! To let you know, as the vegan consumer, where to spend your hard-earned dollars!

Here’s what I have to say. If you are looking for a fight, go watch Rocky. Or The Fighter — it’s totally streaming on Netflix right now—‘cause I only have great things to say about both products.

Here’s how the taste-off went down. Sarah M. Smart came over with a bag of chips. I had the cheese. We ate.

Food for Lovers

  • Spicy. I have a high tolerance, and didn’t notice until the roomie tried some and cried out “Whoo! That has some kick to it!”)
  • Made in small batches by Crystal and Chris Tate in Austin, Texas.
  • Every time I eat it, I think I belong in Austin. (SXSW!)
  • Would bring it to a Superbowl party. Or somewhere there are sports. I don’t know. It has that taste to it. The only bros I know watch Star Wars, so I’d bring it to a screening of that. Non vegan guys would scarf this down. And not know it’s vegan.
  • Has gluten. Sorry, celiac sufferers.
  • Has nutritional yeast in it. I’m a vegan who dislikes nutritional yeast. NOT ANYMORE! I love this product! Cheesy, spicy, plus the tomatoes and peppers within taste fresh.
  • No need to heat up. Can be eaten at room temperature.


  • Comes in spicy and mild flavors! Spicy is good for me, mild is good for a dish like, mac ‘n’ cheese. Or my mom, pepper is too spicy for her.
  • Doesn’t have gluten.
  • Made by Isla Hess in Sacramento, Calif.
  • Every time I eat it, I feel like maybe Sacramento isn’t a such a bad place after all. Maybe as a vegan, I could have a life out there.
  • With this product, I imagine my girlfriends coming over, talking about things we do, putting on avocado face masks and making chili cheese tofu dogs without FEELING GUILTY! Cause Nacheez has so few calories with mucho taste! Bikini body, here I come. (Not. I just drank a six pack)
  • OK, I love road trips. I miss gas station nachos. Nacheez brings me back.
  • Has to be reheated. Not room-temperature friendly. But you own a pot and have a stove top, right?

All in all, both are worth your hard earned dollars. Food for Lovers is definitely a queso in the most delicious form ever, whereas Nacheez fills the void of the nacho cheese you’ve been missing.

Cameron Diaz is getting a jar of Food for Lovers Vegan Queso for Earth Day and I’m not pleased. I’m super-jealz—WHY HER AND NOT ME?!  Life is so hard and unfair sometimes. I’m also mad because I was just in Austin last month—the city of its conception and the only place I’ve been recently that it’s available for purchase—and didn’t pick any up since somehow I’m so out of the loop I didn’t know it existed.  Maybe Cameron does deserve it more than me.

Distinctive Assets (a company that puts together gift bags for celebrities—I can’t wait till I’m famous) approached Chris and Crystal Tate, creators of the world’s first vegan queso, about using their product as swag for A-listers for Earth Day. Of course they said yes. Being able to use celebrities to promote your vegan product is an incredible opportunity to reach the masses (my mom has a subscription to US Weekly, I know what I’m talking about)!

Crystal and Chris are also featured in this month’s VegNews, as they just had a super hip vegan wedding. I imagine all vegan weddings are hip (NO GRILLED VEGETABLE PLATTERS) [Ed.: We’re totally putting that on a sticker! Don’t steal it, thieves!], though I have yet to attend one. No one knows yet if the images used for the article were real or stock photos. SNAP! Sorry, VegNews, you know I still love you.
Natalie Portman is also getting a jar. I thought the baby in her womb was forcing her to indulge in animal products?  She can send her jar to me. Thanks, Natalie!

MOST IMPORTANTLY, when is Rainbow getting this in? Until then, I’m ordering mine from Vegan Essentials! [Ed.: Rainbow is totally carrying it now!] I’m awesome and won a gift certificate, which allowed me to feel like a fantastic celebrity who gets free shit for no reason. Product review: Food for Lovers Vegan Queso!  »

Holy Guacamole*! Food for Lovers vegan cheese in a jar is fucking delicious! It tastes JUST like that bright yellow nacho cheese sauce you get at the movies** but it doesn’t make you throw up after you binge on it! It is a miracle of food science! We live in a truly blessed time, fellow vegans.

The creators of this marvelous product are from Texas (get a rope! sorry, it’s a reflexive reaction brought on by being raised by a television in the ’80s) and so you know they know what’s up when it comes to all things fatty and tasty. Except this shit isn’t really that fatty, but it tastes so rich and creamy! I would buy several jars so you can experiment with nachos, burritos, nachos, enchiladas, spicy mac ‘n’ cheese, and more nachos.

MAKE MEGA NACHOS. How you do this is: you get a cookie sheet, you dump one to two bags of tortilla chips on it, you cover that in a shit-ton of beans, vegan burger crumbles, jalapeños, chopped tomatoes, whatever. Then pour say, several jars of this queso on it and bake at 400 F for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from oven and dump on buckets of vegan sour cream and guacamole (or just slice entire avocados on it if you’re rich, you rich fucker!) and then eat it all and feel both proud and disgusted (the best combination of feelings). MEGA NACHOS!
Those are not my MEGA NACHOS but I want them very badly.

*I feel like this is something Megan Rascal would adorably say.

Promotional recipes that sound delicious: Sun-dried-tomato-encrusted Gardein with spinach puree and baby potatoes!  »

The Gardein people love recipes! They also love you to use Gardein in your recipes! That’s why they’ve created this pretty tasty-looking item, sun-dried-tomato-encrusted Gardein with spinach puree and baby potatoes!

They say it’s for “lovers” or whatever, I guess because it serves two and maybe also because it’s red, and “heart-healthy,” and cruelty-free? But don’t let anyone dictate your meals! If you want to make some Gardein-for-lovers, you make it, and you save that second portion to eat later on, because leftovers are delicious! And if you are someone’s “lover,” first, barf!, and second, making this dish basically ensures sexytimes later, because look at it! It’s beautiful. Just like you, lovers. Awww! puke.

Sun-dried-tomato-encrusted Gardein
1 pkg Gardein Chick’n Scallopini
1 cup fresh bread crumbs
1/2 cup oil-packed sun dried tomatoes, drained (reserve oil)
1 tbsp oil reserved from tomatoes
2 garlic cloves, large minced
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups soy milk

Spinach-basil-cashew puree
1 lb. fresh spinach leaves
6 Tbsp. basil leaves, fresh
6 Tbsp. cashew cream or soy milk
3 Tbsp. nutritional yeast
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 lb. baby potatoes
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper

Cover potatoes with cold water in a medium-sized thick-bottomed pot. Bring potatoes to a boil and cook until just fork tender. Drain and cool immediately.

Preheat oven to 400º F. Once potatoes are cooled, cut in half and toss in olive oil, salt and pepper. place potatoes cut-side down on a nonstick baking pan. Bake potatoes for 15 to 20 minutes, until golden brown and crispy. Remove from oven, then sprinkle with parsley.

Bring water to a boil in a large pot. Add spinach and cook until just tender, approximately 30 to 45 seconds. Drain and place spinach into ice water immediately. When spinach is cold, drain and squeeze out excess water. Transfer spinach, basil, cashew cream and nutritional yeast to food processor. Blend until smooth and refrigerate.

In a food processor, process the bread crumbs, sun-dried tomatoes, reserved oil and garlic cloves until well incorporated. Dredge each thawed Gardein cutlet in flour, then dip into the soy milk, and then into the sundried tomato breadcrumbs. Sauté each side until lightly caramelized and crisp.

Plate the hot roasted potatoes and reheated spinach puree on each of the serving plates and top with sun-dried tomato and sun-dried-tomato-crusted Gardein. Garnish with sun-dried tomato and microgreens.
