Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use!  »

It’s Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use! Yay, Paul! Yay, animals!

After working with HSUS, the Buffalo, New York public school district is the latest to announce that it’s now going entirely meat-free on Mondays! Buffalo joins Los Angeles, Detroit, and several other major school districts in serving its students more plant-based foods. In that vein, Fox News—yes, Fox News—ran a story yesterday entitled, “5 Reasons to Try a Vegetarian Diet.”

The Asbury Park Press became the seventh New Jersey newspaper to editorialize in favor of overriding the veto of our gestation crate ban bill.

Finally, promising news from down under: major Australian grocer Woolworths is ending all sales of eggs from caged hens.

Video of the week: Not a cute animal video this time, but an amazing 1935 Popeye original about preventing cruelty to animals, with an ending that’s a must-see!

Photo of the week: Found these two federally furloughed starving NASA engineers. Gave them food in exchange for coming to New Jersey to help ban gestation crates!

Fox News comes to the vegan side!  »

Am I in an alternate reality? Fox News totally jocks us! In a reasonable and complimentary way!: “Once mocked as a fringe diet for sandal-wearing health food store workers…. Today’s vegans are urban hipsters, suburban moms, college students, even professional athletes.” Now don’t get salty about the urban hipsters part, it’s alright in concert with the others.

The article talks about Skinny Bitch, Alicia Silverstone, and Michael Pollan, the health and environmental benefits of veganism, and the accompanying picture has a Post Punk Kitchen apron in the foreground. They even make a comment on the history: “Abstaining from animal products is an ancient practice found in cultures worldwide.” Yeah, bitches, I didn’t make it up!

The post was inspired by a recent study by the National Restaurant Association where 1,500 chefs put vegan entrees as number 71 on their list of 226 trends for 2011. That ain’t bad! WE ARE DOMINATING.

So, are you disturbed? Is your world collapsing? Should I start watching Fox News?

Tucker Carlson, demigod, can’t decide if Michael Vick should live or die  »

I don’t pay attention to many right-wing political commentators, but I fondly remember Tucker Carlson from the AMAZING Crossfire episode with Jon Stewart. Last week Carlson was back on TV, declaring on Fox News’ Great American Panel that Mike Vick should have been executed for his dog-fighting crimes:

Oh my jesus, I love this guy! He’s out of his mind. Where did they find him? I mean everyone knows I hate Mike Vick but really, the death penalty? I don’t believe in the death penalty, partially because it’s COMPLETELY RACIST, but mostly because I don’t think the government should go around killing people. Are there vegans that do believe in the death penalty? I’d be curious to hear about it. I do think Vick’s career as a public figure should be over. All sorts of scandals ruin peoples’ careers, but electrocuting defenseless dogs doesn’t? Go figure.

He does make one good point: why is the president weighing in on this? It is a bit weird. Like, this is the example of redemption Obama wants to publicize? It seems like there are better causes out there. It makes me think he’s like every Philly dude who just cares about football. Sports are such a joke! I mean, sports are fine, but it’s basically reality TV and the extent to which people get emotionally involved in them is ridic. Get a life. Or at least, get some morals.

Don’t worry guys, this nonsense has a happy ending: Carlson retracted his comment! “‘This is what happens when you get too emotional,’ Carlson said, ‘I’m a dog lover…I love them and I know a lot about what Michael Vick did…I overspoke.* I’m uncomfortable with the death penalty in any circumstance. Of course I don’t think he should be executed, but I do think that what he did is truly appalling.’”

OK, I love dogs and I understand that the brutal murder of a dog can make you emotional, but in the video where he’s making the execution statement, homeboy seems calm enough to contain himself. He’s just crazy.

*For extra credit, there’s a nice piece in the Language Log about "overspoke" and how it’s a real word.

Give Meat a Break, John Stossel  »

We don’t normally like linking to Fox News, but sometimes they’re begging to get mocked, and we can’t help but oblige. You see, Fox News’s John Stossel, author of Give Me a Break: How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media, has a really hard life. If it’s not the eco-fascists denying him his God-given right to eat endangered animals, it’s those lazy women mouthing off about how their easy jobs don’t “pay” enough.

This time he’s locked in epic battle against the Forces of Tyranny, in the urban hell-hole known as Cambridge, Mass., where "Vegan Mondays" have been proposed by the city as a way to fight climate change.

In dubbing it “tyranny,” Stossel comes to the startling revelation that Mayor Denise Simmons wasn’t legitimately elected by a democratic process, but in fact seized control of Cambridge by military coup, because that’s what actual tyranny is. After a decade of cheering on racial profiling, torture, secret prisons and other war crimes, Fox News wants us to believe that leaving meat off the menu one day a week is tantamount to jackbooted thugs marching through the streets.

Never mind how much meat production and animal experimentation remind us of the cold, mechanized efficiency of a certain World War II-era regime that will remain nameless, or how island nations like Tuvalu and the Maldives are faced with evacuating their entire populations. None of that matters if someone, somewhere feels guilty about eating a steak. No one is free when others are oppressed; that’s a bumper sticker we take to heart here at Fox, though we’ve exempted “confinement crates” and “watching your nation slowly drown to death” from “not free.”

Be sure to let John Stossel know what you think.

[Ed.: we’d like to take this moment to again commend the city of Ghent, Belgium, for instituting Thursday Veggie Days to near-total civic success. Europe wins again]
