Sharecropping is alive and well in chicken country »
Monica Potts has a terrific piece in the American Prospect about Tyson’s exploitation of immigrant farm workers. It’s powerful and informative, and everyone should take 10 minutes* to read it, and then pass it around.
The article highlights yet another great argument for veganism: the VAST majority of chickens are raised this way and the extremely small percentage that aren’t are crazy expensive, highly inaccessible, and still involve fucked-up murder. Tyson is a deplorable company and in so many ways, it never hurts to remind people that they don’t give a shit about anyone, animal or human. A must-read.
And when you’re done with that, perhaps you’d like to read something that doesn’t make you want to fly to Arkansas and start busting lips. How about Donald’s story? He’s a rooster at Harvest Home Sanctuary! Please marvel at his cuteness and know that as a vegan, you can look at him in peace. I lifted that quote from some famous dead person (maybe Tolstoy?) but he’s long gone, so he’s probably okay with it. Anyway, I’m off to adopt a million chickens and move to a farm and never see or talk to another person again as long as I live. Except you, you’re great!
*or, OK, 20 minutes BACK OFF I READ SLOW BECAUSE WORDS MEAN MORE TO ME!
