Virtual Reality for factory farm chickens, would they be better off?  »

image

Austin Stewart, an assistant professor in Iowa State University’s College of Design, is getting a lot of attention for his recent project Second Livestock. The project proposes fitting factory farmed hens with devices to give them a “virtual free range” experience. Apparently it’s a joke, or rather a “social experiment” as sites like TechCrunch are calling it. Stewart did an interview with the Ames Tribune on the project, stating, “The goal of the project is to raise that question of how do we know what’s best, or what is humane treatment, and also to look at how we treat ourselves. We’re living in these little boxes, just like chickens.”

I can’t tell if he’s trying to sound dumb or if they just aren’t going about quoting him very well. But the Second Lifestock site is very thought-out, so I wonder if he’s not just fucking with his interviewer to keep the whole thing vague. I suspect, or hope, that the project is actually a satire of the lengths people will go to to maintain industrial farming. However, at the moment, Stewart doesn’t shed much light on the realities of factory farming. Maybe that’s to come?

What are your thoughts?

1,800 Hens Need Homes in Northern California! You Can Help!  »

imageAnimal Place is trying to save a whopping 1,800 hens! But they need homes ASAP! From Animal Place:

Animal Place is ready to spring into action and save 1,800 hens from an egg farm going out of business! We have until April 4th to find as many homes as possible. To do that we need YOUR help!

This rescue is different than others. Because of staff limitations, we can only rescue as many hens as we can place into pre-approved adoptive homes. We have three opportunities to save hens – Friday March 21st, Friday March 28th, and our last date Friday, April 4th. Over those weekends, we’ll host adoption events for approved adopters.

The hens are 8-12 mos-old red girls. Sassy, sweet, and inquisitive, they are great additions to anyone’s flock!

If you can adopt, that would be so awesome and you’d get a new chicken friend!!! If you can’t adopt, please share share share until all the hens have homes!

Sunday: Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary Barn Bash! Help the Turlock hens!  »

We know how much you love the Turlock hens. That’s how we know you’ll be at Harvest Home on Sunday, June 3, for a barn dedication celebration! The Turlock hens got an entirely new barn to live in following their rescue this spring, where they cohabitate with other rescued birds.

Harvest Home wants to thank you for your support in the construction of the barn, as well as show it off, so they’re throwing a little party from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. You’ll eat and drink (vegan-ly, of course), and meet the birds as well as the amazing Harvest Home workers. All ticket sales directly benefit Harvest Home, and this event marks the beginning of the organization’s fundraising campaign for the future “Sanctuary Avian Medical Barn.” Awesome, right? Right!

Buy tickets here, and go party with the birds in their new, wonderful home on Sunday!

Remembering the Turlock chickens: Watch a video and sign a petition!   »

Remember the Turlock Hens? Silly question, of course you do. How could you forget feeling like your heart was literally being ripped out of your chest after reading the story of the 50,000 chickens left to starve in California’s Central Valley?

Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary has begun an online petition drive through Change.org. The petition is asking for the prosecution of Andy Keung Cheung, by the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s office, for willfully starving 50,000 hens for two weeks. The goal is 10,000 signatures, and as of publication of this post, there are almost 3,800. Read more about it and sign the petition here.

Harvest Home also made a short video of the hens before they were rescued. It’s sad stuff. The hens are hungry, and some are dead, and it is very upsetting to be part of a species that lets this kind of thing happen.

Update on the Turlock hens at Animal Place! This is them one month after being rescued from a factory farm where they were left to starve. Now that they aren’t at death’s door, they are happily enjoying life! These hens are ‘bout it for some dust baths. I don’t get dust baths; that’s how they keep clean? I don’t understand. I’d look it up but I gave up learning for lent.

Animal Place still needs donations! I mean, they took in like a gagillion hens. That’s a lot of beaks to feed!

A heartwarming update about the Turlock hen rescue! Turns out, the hens love the sun! And spreading their wings! And food and water! Who would have thought.

Don’t forget to donate Farm Sanctuary and Animal Place for continued care of the 4000+ rescue hens. And don’t buy eggs!

Sign the petition, volunteer, adopt, and donate to help the 50,000 chickens left to starve!  »

The fight to save the rescued hens from Stanislaus County continues. This is the largest ever farmed animal rescue in the United Sates. Conditions were terrible but people were able to help some of the birds!:

“When we arrived on the scene outside the abandoned egg farm, I was horrified at the suffering of the chickens happening in front of me, overwhelmed by the magnitude of the cruelty,” said Anne Martin, Harvest Home board member. “By the next morning, we had partnered with sanctuaries, volunteers from across Northern California, and thousands of supporters following the rescue of these chickens. Together, we were able to save 4,460 hens who will never again suffer the severe confinement of an egg farm, and from this time forward, will know only human kindness.”

The picture at the top is by Marji from Animal Place. This hen has never seen grass or felt the sun, she is about to take her first step outside! Marji says they are still in need of donations but also, they are in desperate need of volunteers. So if you are able, go volunteer with the rescue chickens!

If you want to volunteer, email marji@animalplace.org or call her at 530-798-5114. To donate, click here

The hens will be up for adoption within the next two weeks. If you want to adopt one, fill out the application at www.animalplace.org.

Finally—and I know you can all do this!—sign the petition started by Harvest Home, ”calling on the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office to prosecute A&L Poultry’s Andy Keung Cheung for willfully starving 50,000 chickens.” Do it!
