Nice post in NYT: How to Go Vegan. Do you agree with the points? I think it’s pretty good. I mean, it’s not 11 Tips for New Vegans, but that’s a high bar.

» There's a new website to help us be vegan!

The nonprofit Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM) (see what they did there?) has a new website that’s chock-full of design elements circa 2006 but useful info that’s so 2012 on the whole vegan thing.
There are sections on getting started, what to eat, why to go vegan, how to stay healthy, and perhaps best of all: handling social situations. We’re all total misfits, just admit it, and we could use a sweet website to tell us how not to make our family think we’re assholes and how to deal with being that one vegan at work. True story: my boss once brought cookies I couldn’t eat to a celebration of my promotion. Sigh.
Anyway, check it out, send your newbie friends there, and scrawl livevegan.org on bathroom walls nationwide. Let the revolution begin!

» The Comment Section for Every Article Ever Written About PETA
Laura saw this great piece on the Hairpin (she totes hearts the Hairpin) and I have to say, it’s kind of perfect. People! Always saying the same stuff! Oh, you wacky same-stuff-saying people.
Here is my favorite string:
28. Read “Diet for a Small Planet” and “Eating Animals” and “Animal Liberation”!
29. Peter Singer is ableist and hates babies.
30. What about the fetuses? What’s the difference between infanticide and abortion?
31. SHUT UP, 28!
32. I prefer Michael Pollan. Clearly you have never heard “Eat food, not too much, mostly kale.”
33. Pollan is loaded with rich privilege and is a total jag. I live on top of one bodega and under a second bodega and can eat only Fritos.
34. All vegans are rich.
35. INDIA! And we can feed the world with not-eating meat!
36. Meat eaters are fat.
37. SO MANY FAT VEGANS.

Top 10 links of the week: a hopscotch game through the playground of veganism! »
Your cute pet video of the week! I just love how intense the kitty is. Like, so intense.
File under things that are actually a big deal—Livestock, antibiotics and superbugs: IT’S ALL TRUE! Original story in NPR but Grist has a great discussion of it.
Philly.com has a message for you: not all vegans are white! I really never got this stereotype, maybe because I’m from Philadelphia and the first vegans I ever knew were Black Panthers. Of course, it makes sense if there are more white vegans in the US than other ethnicities because there are more white people in the US than other ethnicities. Bonus: the piece features Vegan Mainstream’s mom!
New Yorkers, take the A/C to Nostrand Avenue and get ready for an affordable fake meat extravaganza! One of Vegansaurus’ very favorite sites, Broke-Ass Stuart, is here to guide you through this reasonably-priced TVP adventure!
You’ve probably heard, but in case you haven’t, Mary Kay and some other brands have started animal testing again. Good idea? People are more aware of the cruelty-free label then ever. I hope this tanks them.
From Scientific America, a dingo named Sterling used a table to steal name tags. He’s at some kind of “Centre” that I don’t know about but still, animals are supre cool.
From Treehugger: Global warming could give rise to miniature animals. I am trying SO HARD not to be excited. I’m not, I swear.
A New York Times blog writes about Blossom’s new bakery in Manhattan!
National Geographic presents the “Rhino Wars” in pictures. Pretty sad stuff. Poor rhinos.
Fit Sugar has the lowdown on the top vegan protein sources. It’s a very short list. But I like to see us in the mainstream!
Vanity Fair has an interview with one of my faves, Brigitte Bardot! She gets into her love and activism for animals.
“I am not playing political games,” she says. “I don’t care. I don’t bother with that. I belong to no party and I am militant for no one. All of my causes, including the most radical, are motivated by the defense of animals.”
I love you, BB!

Top 10 links of the week!: A harlem shuffle through the dance floor of veganism! »
Scary rooster Puff has it in for kitty Blacko! This is kind of sad.
Grist’s Protein Angst series is still killing it! My new favorite: Never mind the meat—worry about eating enough plants. This is what I’m always thinking! Like, dude, I get enough protein, do you get enough veggies?! There is so much concern over our nutrients but I’d bet meat-mouths are not hitting all the nutritional points!
A whole town in India relocated to make room for tigers! That’s nice.
McDonald’s thinks trying their food is less risky than petting stray pitbulls. People are not pleased. But I’m glad our standards are now risky and less risky. Obviously they are implying you may get bit by a dog; generally I want my food to be on an entirely different scale than getting bit by a dog—not just less “risky.”
From Ecouterre, fur trapping season ends with record high of non-target animal deaths. That means exactly what you think it means.
Choosing Raw has another great post on PCRM and fat-shaming (though we discourage the use of “overweight” as it maintains there is a specific weight you should be). Gena stresses the need to focus on using “honest language, honest facts, and honest statistics.” Here here!
Australia is up in arms over recent footage documenting inhumane conditions in a Sydney slaughterhouse. You can see the video on the linked page. It’s pretty rugged. The one good thing though is it seems like Australia actually does stuff when footage like this surfaces. The slaughterhouse in question was immediately closed (I don’t know if it was permanently closed but still, swift action).
An NYT editorial calls for humane national standards in egg production!
You know we’ve been discussion palm oil lately, well Grist is here to help you break free of the palm oil grasp!
From HuffPo, you may have already heard about this but if not: Westminster severed ties with Pedigree because they didn’t want to see images of puppies behind bars during commercial breaks. Stay classy, Westminster!
From Ecorazzi, Ian Somerhalder (see below) is getting an award from the Humane Society! I have an award for him too! IN MY PANTS. Sorry guys, I can’t help it, he’s the hotness times god damn.

Funny birdie wakes his kitty bff!
First up, our own Sarah M. Smart was interviewed by Grubwithme! I am late in reporting this because she forgot to tell me about it. I forgive her because she calls me a saint in the interview. My favorite part is the last question where she says she doesn’t want to give too much away about what’s to come—like we are a soap opera! We totally are. Stay tuned!
Um, the Canadian government is going to start poisoning wolves with strychnine and shooting them from planes. Read what Grist wrote about it because I could not have said it better. Ok I’ll add one point: WTF.
From Pawnation, the 5 best ways to keep your pets’ teeth clean. I just had to get poor Mitsy’s teeth cleaned, they put them under to do it! And Figaro has to go in soon and they even said he needs extractions! I’m so nervous for him!
If you want to be grossed out, and you know you do, here’s the 10 grossest pictures from a charity oyster slurping competition. Whenever people bring up the oyster thing, for one, I’m like, uh people used to say fish couldn’t feel pain either. So you never know. But even if oysters don’t feel pain, EW THEY ARE GRODY TO THE MAX! WHY would I WANT to eat them? They are like little shells of mucus! If I want to eat garlic butter, I do not have to put it on a loogie first. Put it on an artichoke or drink it straight, but I’ll pass on the loogie.
Rose Pedals, the source for everything vegan and wedding, has a super round-up of vegan Valentine’s Day gift guides, resources, and fun events. Check it out! My favorite part is when they say I’m funny. That part was great.
From SuperVegan, 10 questions with Sarah Peltier of the NYC Vegan Shop-Up! The Shop-Up is this Sunday, the 12th! Don’t forget!
From Vegan Mainstream, Real Men Eat Plants and are Kind to Animals. Do we agree? I mean, I’m sure we agree! But do you think we’ve made cultural strides in this direction? Discussion topic of the week!
Have you been following PETA’s lawsuit Tilikum v. SeaWorld? I guess it just wrapped up with the judge deciding that the 13th Amendment does not apply to non-humans. I thought it was a very interesting case. Should the 13th Amendment apply to non-human animals? I don’t know but it’s definitely an interesting idea. Second discussion topic of the week!
Check out what my pop found in the local Philly Latino news paper!: Ser vegano también puede ser delicioso! Yay! Somos los mejores!
Buzzfeed does it again!: The 15 most adorable bunny bathtime photos! [Update: We just learned from our awesome readers that bunnies shouldn’t be bathed! So don’t do that with your bunny, okay? For lots of reasons why, see our comments. OUR APOLOGIES to our readers and the bunnies!]

Top 10 links of the week! An edifying ramble through veganism! »
Per usual, I slipped up last week, so this spans a couple weeks. Leave me alone, I have a real job!
National Geographic has a nice infograph about the LEGAL wildlife trade in Asia. It’s ill. I would have posted it but it’s too big to post the whole thing so go check it out.

From One Green Planet, vegan wine pairings! I love my wine and you know this.
Grist wonders, is Idaho a safe haven for CAFOs (Confined Animal Feeding Operation)? Damn, Idaho, that’s whack.
Ke$ha is the Humane Society International’s new Global Ambassador. All right.
Wildlife officials in upstate New York “are squealing over ‘captive hunts’ upstate that have flooded three counties with out-of-control feral hogs.” Squealing.
This is kind of a big deal but I don’t have time to write a good post on it so maybe it can be our discussion topic: A new economics study confirms Namibian seal-watching is worth 300 percent more than seal hunting. I’ve heard of things like this before, where like safari-type tourist things could be worth more than elephant ivory and whale-watching could bring in more cash money than whale-killing. Have you guys? Seems pretty awesome. There should be an organization that JUST focuses on this. Money makes the world go round!
Our favorite guilt-ridden omni, Sami Grover from Treehugger, says all the meat eaters should eat less meat! It’s totes true.
Vegan Mainstream says our Laura is a vegan mover and shaker! That Laura, she’s so lovable. And foul-mouthed.
Gothamist taste-tested the Dun-Well faux-gras donut and the foie gras donut, and the dudes who made the actual dead-goose-liver pastry were all, The fake one is good, but we won’t be making a vegan version ourselves because vegans have “a FUBU mentality when it comes to vegan delights.” Which, buddy, do you know how much more business you would get if you offered novelty fancy vegan food? So much.
Refinery29, of which my favorite ex-boyfriend is a founding member, has a nice vegan shoe list: 12 Vegan Shoes That Aren’t Fugly. Some of the usual suspects, but several I hadn’t seen! And YOU KNOW I seen a lot of shoes. I like those first loafers, buy them for me.

First of all, SO FLATTERED: We’re on Carpe Vegan’s neat Vegan 100 list: vote us to the top! Also, the San Francisco Bay Guardian totally gave us a Best of the Bay 2011 award for “Best Righteous Vegan Sass” (WHAT?) and we’re extremely pleased and honored and in very fine company so WOO AWARD WINNERS WHAT?
Apparently in Bosnia, they make bulls fight each other and they used to beat them up first to get them angry. They aren’t going to do that anymore—the beating part at least. A win? Why do people like these crazy events?
Yo! The U.S. (where I keep all my stuff) may impose sanctions on Iceland for whaling! I HOPE THOSE ICELANDIC FUCKERS GET WHAT THEY DESERVE.
Good has a vegan guide to getting it on. Like, sex.
Downer about dead baby dolphins over at HuffPo.
Birds massage each other! Birds are so smart! And kinky!
Hey, New York! Yankee Stadium will soon have vegan SNAX provided by Babycakes! LUCKYYYY.
The emperor penguin Happy Feet (gag on the name, but whatevs) is recovering well, and here’s a video of him passing his penguin physical.
Guys? The Post-Punk Kitchen doesn’t update a lot, but when it does, OMFG. I would eat an entire loaf of bread’s worth of these sandwiches, in one sitting.
Whaling is a slowly dying form of murder, so we’re happy to see that Japan is hopping on the bandwagon. The country’s Fisheries Agency has released a report with its first-ever mention of discontinuing research whaling as a viable option.
The lovely Sarah M. Smart heavily contributed to these links! Thanks, Sarah!

[Funny idea and video from WWF. Can’t see the video? Watch it on Vegansaurus.com]
Guess what! Ecorazzi tells us that fewer dogs and cats are being euthanized in the United States! Holler! Go spay and neuter programs, get your progress on!
The Humane Society is having an event in D.C. next weekend! You should go!
Remember that awful pig farm video? It got Safeway and some others to stop buying pigs from that supplier! One down, a zillion to go.
On July 28, Animal Planet is going to show a Gulf Oil Spill special! Let’s watch it and get depressed. Stone cold bummer.
“Grizzly Bear In Yellowstone National Park Was Just Protecting Cubs, Say Park Rangers.” Yay park rangers! Huffpo has the story.
Fish are totally eating a shit-ton of plastic. What can we do? What do you do to reduce your plastic usage? I need help.
Over at Grist, read about “The Most Important Fish in the Sea” and how Virginia is a jerk.
Chick-Fil-A says it’s cow appreciation day? And that means we should eat chicken? Hardy har har!
The Telegraph has some super-funny animal pictures by photographer Joanne Williams! See monkey below.

The Fourth of July is upon us! Paw Nation has 10 Tips to Prevent Pet Firework Fears. BTW: This episode of Top 10 Links of the Week is brought to you by the number 10! And the letter AWESOME.
WTF. Teenage male dolphins totally beat up porpoises! For fun! Or because of sexual frustration, says one scientist. I know I should have more jokes about this but Grist pretty much hit them all. Hilarisad.
On the ad beat again! Fearless Revolution, blog of ad darling Alex Bogusky, is backing Meatless Monday! Now if only I could get my agency to do it. Or at least just my table! I brought them vegan donuts this past Monday and everything, what more do they want?!
Top 10 Things you Need to Know About the Farm Bill. Food subsidies are bullshit!
Check out Laura’s Week in Vegan! Leave her a comment! She loves attention!
Aspen goes Meatless! For Mondays, at least. Everything I know about Aspen comes from Aspen Extreme.
My discussion topic of the week!: This Dish is Veg has the story on a proposed Dutch ban on killing unstunned animals. Jewish and Muslim communities are saying this violates their religious freedoms. What do you think about navigating these religious waters when it comes to animals rights? I feel like it’s one of the hardest issues because it’s not like, oh, meat is yummy, it’s like a cultural sensitivity thing. Nobody wants to be ethnocentric but, at the same time, fuck you guys for hurting animals! Also, does stunned mean electrocuted? Because that sounds painful too.
Top 10 Smartest Animals! Number eight? Pigeons! My beloved!
Top Five Animals Going Extinct Because Some Guy Can’t Get it Up. Hilarious downer from Grist! But Grist, today’s episode was brought to you by the number 10, not five. Get it right next time.
Unhealthy Vegans have the story on LA Vegan Beerfest! Lots ‘o pictures! Including this super awesome one:

What do you think? Best vegan tattoo you’ve seen? Seen better?
