I don’t like to use caps locks excessively, but learning about Vromage opening in WeHo in late September makes me want to TEXT SCREAM ABOUT HOW AWESOME THIS IS! VEGAN CHEEEEEEEEESE SHOP, PEOPLE!!!!

Okay, now the facts: 

  • Chef Youssef is the mysterious, magical man behind this new endeavor 
  • Cheeses will mostly be organic and many gluten free
  • There’s no social media links on their webpage, but Youssef put his cell phone number, so feel free to text him to say how much you love him
  • I will eat there all the freakin’ time
  • Vegan cheese, ZOMG

I’ll keep ya’ll updated (BECAUSE I’LL BE CAMPING OUTSIDE UNTIL THEY OPEN).

L.A. bans painful tools used to train elephants!  »

Infuriating still from Peta’s "Elephants in Circuses: Training & Tragedy"

On Wednesday, Los Angeles sided with the elephants when the city council banned the use of “bullhooks, pitchforks, baseball bats and other goads that circus trainers use to control elephants and other exotic animals.”*

First of all, “pitchforks and baseball bats”?!

Secondly, thank you, L.A. The city council’s vote was unanimous (faith in humanity momentarily restored), and the ban takes effect in January 2017, a delay “meant to give circuses time to change how they handle elephants or remove them from the shows.” (You know which choice I’m rooting for.)

Naturally Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey spokesman Stephen Payne (insert snide remark about how much pain elephants are caused by this abuse), was pissed, and said the law was “completely unnecessary.” He went on to say that this new ban “would force the cancellation of Los Angeles circus events” (excellent!) and City News Service quoted him as saying that the circus may move to a venue outside the city limits. (I see a PETA protest happening.)

City Councillor Paul Koretz said using bullhooks is “inhumane and unhealthy,” and that “the circus is welcome in Los Angeles, just without the bullhooks. … We’re hoping that they follow the model of other circuses that don’t use exotic animals.” 

Happy day for the elephants and other “exotic animals!”

This weekend: Artisanal LA Spring show with Courtesan Cupcakes!  »

Plans this weekend? Why not hit up this artisanal spring show in downtown Los Angeles? It looks like Etsy in action. I LOVE ETSY! I wish I could go, but I’m moving. You know how that is: lifting heavy boxes and waiting for the electric/internet/gas company to show up and set things up. Exciting! Exhausting! Maybe I’ll go on Sunday, we’ll see! My heart wants what it wants, and that just so happens to be sweets by Jessika Lauren’s Courtesan Cupcakes, and she’ll be there! I’m dying to try her stuff—it’s all so beautiful and 100% vegan. Plus, our LA vegan queen (via London now, I know), Quarrygirl, says those cupcakes are some of THE BEST

Vegan meat substitutes are officially taking over the world right now, at least according to The New York Times, Fast Company, and my tummy

I recently visited LA, and while I was in town posting pics of enormous gluten-free vegan pretzels from Sage, Beyond Meat messaged me on Instagram notifying me that I was selected as the “fan of the month,” and invited me to visit their office in El Segundo! What an honor! Of course I accepted their invitation!

The Beyond Meat staff was so incredibly welcoming and friendly! I love it when vegan companies are as epic towards their fellow human beings as they are towards non-human animals. Let’s just say the warmth and idealism was brimming over throughout the sunny, El Segundo open-floor plan office. I love that Beyond Meat is doing a campaign to reduce meat consumption by 25% in the next 20 years!

Other office highlights: I got a Beyond Meat t-shirt, I met an adorable puppy named Winnie, and got to see the talented Beyond Meat chef cooking up some new products that are too top secret to mention here!

Beyond Meat Beef-free crumbles are so delicious in pasta sauce!

After Beyond Meat showed me their great office and gave me and my brother a bunch of beef-free crumbles and chicken-free strips, I served Beyond Meat beef-free crumbles to a bunch of omnivores in the form of pasta sauce. Everyone thought the product was delicious! Beyond Meat’s team also told me some top secret details about new products coming out, and while I’m not allowed to spill the beans, OMG, you guys, this is a very good time to be a plant eater!

LA Vegan Crepe is closing March 31st  »

RIP awesome croissants and crepes (and many other things). LA Vegan Crepe is shutting their doors on Monday, March 31st, but don’t think this is the last we’ll see of them. The location and lack of weekday business is the reason behind their closing, although they had consistent weekend traffic. Their Facebook page suggests that they’re already looking to reopen somewhere, and their owner confirmed that they’re searching for investors. 

PLEASE SOMEONE GIVE THEM A TON OF MONEY SO THEY CAN REOPEN!! (Trust me, the chocolate croissants, alone, are worth the investment!)
