Russell Simmons, who’s totally the man, was on the Martha Stewart Show last Tuesday and they made vegan kamut berry pilaf with butternut squash and cauliflower. Butternut squash and cauliflower sound hella good together! I will say it now: I love Martha Stewart. Always have. So I especially love when she does vegan stuff. I love Russell Simmons too, though isn’t he a bit strange? And he says he hates vinegar; who hates vinegar?! Vinegar rules. I was even on the Bragg apple cider vinegar diet once! Well I don’t know if it was a diet, I just drank the stuff, like, a lot. I guess by those standards, I’ve been on a beer diet for quite some time! I must say, it’s doing wonders!

Hey guys, remember that recipe for strawberry gazpacho we had in the link-o-rama a couple weeks ago? I made it! Around these parts we can buy strawberries from a stand RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE ACTUAL FIELD for $9 for a seven-poundish half-flat, and they are abundant, and we must take advantage of their abundance while we can.
It’s unbelievably easy—the most challenging parts were pouring it neatly, and dicing the veg for the garnish, because my knife skills are lacking.
REGARDLESS: make this. You will LOVE IT. And yes, they’re a set.

Haitian farmers are super-pissed at Monsanto for donating their evil hybrid seeds as some kind of helpful gesture—seriously that third paragraph is enough to make you sick. Meanwhile, subsidizing legal fishing plus tons of illegal fishing is "plundering" the oceans.

Have you read about Mercy For Animals’ investigation of Conklin Dairy Farms in Ohio? It’s unbelievably horrific—JUST BUSINESS AS USUAL. Are you people done drinking milk YET?

Wildcare would like the California state Assembly to make laws that protect our oceans from a BP-in-the-Gulf-style disaster—here is a petition to get that message across.

Mixed messages from the media aren’t surprising, right? The Chronicle says a vegan diet is acceptable (this week), despite totally ignoring us in its restaurants-and-food-news repository, Inside Scoop (no link because BOO); SFWeekly likes Pepple’s Donuts more than Whole Foods’ “Posh” knock-offs; and Martha Stewart had a recipe for strawberry gazpacho that sounded really amazing and is totally vegan though of course no one said anything because that word is only for theme days.

West Hollywood banned “sales of dogs and cats in retail stores.” South Lake Tahoe, Calif., and Albuquerque, N.M., also prohibit sales of companion animals. Pretty great, right? Because ANIMALS AREN’T INANIMATE OBJECTS! FOR FUCK’S SAKE. This year, the American Kennel Club will acccept mixed-breed dogs in the Agility, Rally, and Obedience competitions, for the first time in the club’s existence. And one day, dog-breeding for “beauty” or whatever-the-fuck will be seen as base, vile, and speciesist, and people will giggle at our earnestly angry essays about how fucking gross the whole idea of dog breeds was. Sorry guys I’m in a weird mood today.

Neal Harden used to be the chef of Pure Food and Wine! But now he is setting up a restaurant in Bali! I recommend subscribing to his quite interesting blog through a reader, as the font on the layout is fucking impossible to read.

From the vegetarian artislovely comes this recipe for Mexican Fiesta Soup, which looks delicious and seems totally appropriate for a blustery spring day.
Ingredients4 tomatillos, peeled and rinsed2/3 cup fresh cilantro leaves, packed, rinsed well2 garlic cloves minced2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice1 small white onion, diced1 jalapeno, diced, plus more sliced for garnish (optional)1 teaspoon ground cuminOne 28 1/2-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes (about 8 tomatoes), drained and crushed3 ears corn, quartered4 cups vegetable stock1/2 ripe avocado, pitted, cut into 1/4-inch-thick slicesNonstick cooking sprayFreshly ground pepper
Directions1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place tomatillos on a small rimmed baking sheet. Roast in oven, turning once midway through, until they are softened and slightly charred, about 25 minutes. Remove from oven, and let cool slightly. Transfer to the bowl of a food processor; add cilantro, one garlic clove, and lime juice. Process until smooth and combined; set aside.
2. Lightly coat bottom of a large nonstick saucepan with cooking spray. Add onion, remaining garlic clove, and diced jalapeno; cook, stirring occasionally, over medium heat until onion is softened, about 7 minutes. Add cumin, tomatoes, corn, and chicken vegetable stock. Bring liquid to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer until vegetables are tender, 12 to 15 minutes.
3. Remove from heat; stir in 3 tablespoons reserved tomatillo mixture, and season with pepper. Add sliced avocado. Ladle into serving bowls; garnish with jalapeno slices, if desired. Serve with remaining tomatillo pesto
Your Vegansaurus knows that some of you have issues with cilantro, so for you we recommend substituting some tarragon, a pinch of rosemary, maybe a pinch of thyme—all fresh!—and a couple extra garlic cloves. Try it and see!

Vegan-type fun-times events!
The SF Vegan Bakesale location has moved! It’s still happening tomorrow, Saturday May 8 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., but now it will be in front of Herbivore at 983 Valencia St. between 21st and 22nd Streets in the Mission. Be there or be an animal-hating, self-denying jerk!

After the Bakesale, you can protest Thomas Keller’s use of foie gras at the French Laundry in Yountville. The protest begins at 6:30 p.m. The groups will also protest at Keller’s restaurants Bouchon in Beverly Hills at 7 p.m., and at Per Se in NYC at 11:30 a.m. (EDT!). Burned out on Bakesales? Don’t want to cross the Bay Bridge? PETA blows it again! Definitely, spending donations to fly a weird, nasty message over Mobile, Ala., was a good use of money. You guys are SO EMBARRASSING, GOD. That said, oil-drilling and fishing are ruining the oceans. Stop eating fish, stop driving so goddamn much, and bring some hair to the bakesale tomorrow to help clean up the animal victims of the Deep Horizon disaster.

And speaking of whom: Popular Mechanics explains how trained volunteers clean these birds. The Audubon Magazine blog has regular, super-informative updates on the wildlife suffering from this tragedy as well.

Some lady—who isn’t a nutritionist, therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, or even someone with a certificate in “food studies” from a community college—would like parents to watch out for their "strict vegan" kids, who are probably suffering from "orthorexia." Ma’am, you are an idiot; kindly shut the fuck up. Also: would you like a cupcake?

Bryant Terry was on Martha Stewart on Monday! How did we miss this? He cooked citrus chard with raisins and spinach with garlic and chile, both of which sound simple and scrumptious. Yes, Alice Waters was there, too.

Save the Frogs got Gary Danko to stop serving Florida pig frogs, and earned a single, ultra-snide article about it. Good job, guys! Shut up, news.

Obviously we aren’t going because we’re all blogging for pennies/underemployed and -paid/unemployed losers/neither scientists nor medical researchers (if we were, we wouldn’t be here, suckers), but: PCRM is hosting a two-day educational conference in August on animal testing that sounds amazing—it advertises “a global panel of experts to discuss existing and promising alternatives to the use of animals in research”—and if you are involved in the sciences, perhaps you should attend! And send us a postcard about how great it is.

Mike Tyson is VEGAN? Say WHAT? That’s possibly weirder than these crazy-looking "gaze-averting" glasses that allow people to look at gorillas in zoos without causing the apes to feel threatened.

The only place I’ve seen the Shelter Pet Project commercials is on MSNBC during The Rachel Maddow Show, and they are CHRISTMAS-THEMED. Not enough, you guys. Help get the word out—an adopted pet is the best pet!

The ag industry is SO MAD at the Humane Society and its successes in showing consumers that they can change the industry’s cruelest practices. And though Cargill may not care, we’re happy that HSUS has won its federal case against Hudson Valley Foie Gras, which has been charged with multiple violations of the Clean Water Act.

Ike’s neighbors are SO MAD at Ike, his mom, and Ike’s customers, and are trying to get him evicted from the building. How can you guys complain about losing your yards when you don’t have any yards?

Mine is now available on DVD, iTunes and Netflix! Buy it for your mom, if you believe in celebrating corporate holidays! You could also buy her a falafel from a Michael Mina restaurant, because it’s (apparently) vegan and moms love it when you spend lots of money on them.

A Canadian guy shot a bear that turned out to be a grizzly-polar bear hybrid. A marine biologist says this is a result of climate change, and predicts there will be more interbreeding between marine mammals as the ice caps melt. Uh, neat?

Guns are the fucking worst. In Oakland last Saturday, some police officers shot a deer to death with their pistols, despite having tranquilizer guns on them. Back in February, on a tip, a SWAT team busted into a Missouri home, shot the family pit bull to death, and shot and injured the family corgi. There’s video, but it’s awful, especially around 3:14 when the guy being arrested realizes what the police have done. Right, and of course the guy and his wife were later charged with child endangerment.

But a Dresdner man “married” his cat of 10 years, Cecelia, because she is already 15 and does not have much longer to live and he loves her very much. An unnamed actor officiated the ceremony. So that’s—less depressing than the police shooting your dogs for NO GOOD REASON. On the other hand, the Florida state legislature refused to pass an anti-bestiality bill, because of stupidity.

Cupcake Blogger (I love/hate that such a category of blogger exists) Rite of Cake challenged a group of 50 women to try vegan and non-vegan cupcakes (A TRUE PEPSI CHALLENGE!) and report back on which one they preferred. Well, see above. BAM, BITCHES!

In even more awesome news, it was a Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World recipe vs. a Martha Stewart recipe. So what it comes down to is that a couple chicks from Brooklyn are better than the Queen of Clean, or whatever her ridiculous nickname is.
