It’s Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use! Yay, Paul! Yay, animals!

Remember HSUS’ investigation at a Wyoming pig factory supplying meat giant Tyson Foods that led to numerous criminal cruelty convictions? This week there was yet another conviction stemming from that case.

A pregnant coworker of mine has a good op-ed this week on the plight of pregnant pigs in gestation crates.

LiveNation (which owns Ticketmaster and dozens of the nation’s largest concert venues) announced this week that it’s partnering with HSUS to increase vegetarian options and mandate higher animal welfare standards for its supply chain.

Want to be a powerful man? Learn from these folks and maybe one day you’ll be on Business Insider’s list of “Nine Powerful Men Who Don’t Eat Meat”!

In that (unclogged) vein, wouldn’t it be cool if doctors prescribed fruits and veggies rather than drugs? Well, some are!

Te gusta el lunes sin carne? Then check out Meatless Monday Mexico!

P.S. Video of the week: A very smart raccoon innovates by walking upright!

P.P.S. What have you done to get Steve King’s anti-animal amendment out of the farm bill? Take action now!

Oakland City Council adopts citywide Meatless Mondays!  »

image

Looks like one Bay Area city is earning its MMU badge of honor! Just like the city of Los Angeles and the Oakland Unified School District, the city of Oakland has resolved that Mondays should be meatless.

What does that entail? Not the Meatless Monday police yanking the animal parts off omnivores’ plates, of course. “The resolution encourages residents to eat meat-free meals on Mondays and restaurants, businesses, and other local institutions to offer more plant-based foods at the start of every week to improve community health, environmental sustainability, and to reduce the number of animals factory farmed.”

What’s your favorite place to eat meatless in Oakland? Check out our Oakland tag for suggestions, and if we haven’t covered it, let us know! Then share the best meatless (read: animal-productless) spots with your omnivorous friends and neighbors. What if they don’t know about Timeless Coffee yet? Take them on a Monday!

It’s Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use!  »

imageIt’s Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use! Yay, Paul! Yay, Animals!

Huge news this week: The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education voted 4-1 to enact an exclusively vegetarian Meatless Monday policy at all K-8 schools in the district. Unsurprisingly, this was to the chagrin of the Animal Ag Alliance, which waged a losing campaign to defeat the measure.

If you liked that, you may also be impressed that Canada is poised to pass a national regulation curbing gestation crate use.

I’ve got a new piece on HuffPost about the increasing number of folks even within the ag industry who are starting to second-guess their ag-gag strategy. Feel free to leave a comment.

A number of papers, such as the Bakersfield Californian, are editorializing against Rep. Steve King’s (R-Iowa) nefarious attempt in the Farm Bill to erase numerous laws we’ve passed to protect farm animals. Meanwhile, King and his allies in the meat industry are also trying to kill federal legislation to ban barren battery cages for laying hens.

Finally, this week, a major story got a lot of media play announcing extensive new research showing that vegetarian diets are linked to longer lives. In that vein, influential UK members of Parliament are urging Britons to eat less meat as a way to increase food security.

P.S. Video of the week: HSUS’s future CEO?

P.P.S. Live in SoCal? Hope to see you at veg appetit next week!

Hey, it’s a special UC Berkeley edition of the Meatless Monday Unicorn! I made this a while back for their Meatless Monday initiative and found it recently. Thought I’d share! Because sharing is, etc! But it’s as relevant as ever because I think MMU is taking some summer classes and will hopefully pass on some of his new knowledge to us in the next months. We’ll see.
Speaking of which, you can share this MMU through flickr! Or right from this post. Whatever the kids are doing these days. Just make sure you remind your omni friends that it’s Meatless Monday once again!

It’s time once again to veganize BART!  »

Last year your votes helped place some great ads from the Factory Farming Awareness Coalition on BART. Now you can help FFAC get a new round of free BART advertising this year by voting again via the BART Blue Sky program Facebook poll.

Voting closes on Sunday, May 12, and the top three finishers will receive $50,000 worth of BART ads in stations and onboard trains. All voters can also enter to win a $500 Clipper card.

If you want to see more ads like this during your commute, get clicking! Help out FFAC and promote cruelty-free living.

LA Weekly celebrated Meatless Monday this week with vegan pâté from BLD in Los Angeles. And yes, they have the recipe! You know our Megan loves (LOVES) the Regal Vegan’s Faux Gras, and pâté is terribly chic to serve alongside your artisan vegan cheese, locally sourced and cultured pickled vegetables, and homemade antipasti. So let’s make it!

Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use!  »

It’s Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use! Yay, Paul! Yay, Animals!

I’m psyched to let you know that HSUS worked with L.A.’s school system to implement a Meatless Monday program for all L.A. public schools (K-12). Every Monday, all 650,000 meals they serve are now all-vegetarian. It’s my honor to be on CNN HLN tonight discussing this news with the always-wonderful Jane Velez-Mitchell. You can watch the segment here—please share it!

Colorado’s legislature held a hearing this week on a bill to ban the cruel tail-docking of dairy cows. Despite the practice being opposed by the American Veterinary Medical Association, dairy farmers still shamefully defended the practice at the hearing.

NPR’s “On the Media” had a very worthwhile interview about the meat industry’s efforts to silence whistleblowers by passing laws to ban undercover investigations by HSUS and fellow great animal protection groups. Check it out.

Finally, you may be interested in this op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer about the horsemeat scandal.

Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use!  »

It’s Paul Shapiro’s weekly dose of all things animals! Yes!

It’s almost Thanksgiving…Wondering how most turkeys are treated? Check out the newly-released Mercy For Animals investigation documenting appalling abuse of turkeys raised for Butterball.

(You may also want to take a look at this week’s NY Times’ major feature on vegetarian Thanksgvings.)

On that note, Los Angeles became the biggest city in the country to official start promoting Meatless Mondays. (Even the Today Show covered it!)

Finally, if you’ve got some time and want a fascinating read, here’s Washington Monthly’s new feature, “Obama’s Game of Chicken.” As they bill the story: “The untold story of how the administration tried to stand up to big agricultural companies on behalf of independent farmers, and lost.”

Video of the week: Not quite the lion and lamb laying down, but at least the dog and the fawn…

Los Angeles City Council passes Meatless Monday resolution!  »

Good job, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry and Councilman Ed Reyes! With the support of your colleagues, you made L.A. the largest U.S. city to lend its support to Meatless Mondays. Which is great! We are proud of your initiative.

Of course, we see this as ascending one more rung on the meatless ladder, eventually achieving such heights as Ghent’s civic Vegetarian Thursdays, and one day going full veg, once we become a totally socialist nation of bread lines and communes omg—but for now, it is a good step, a non-binding resolution, and we applaud it. As does our Meatless Monday spokesbeing, we’re sure.

We love you, Los Angeles! Congratulations!
