Especially the week after Thanksgiving, it’s good to remind ourselves of the undeniable fact: demand for meat continues to fall in the US. Check out my friend Harish’s latest post on the topic.
In that vein, here’s a cool piece about the Hunts Point Alliance for Children (in NYC) working with HSUS to implement Meatless Mondays.
And in that vein, Temple Grandin has some advice for US pork producers still defending their immobilization of pigs in tiny cages. She argues in this interview: “For example, look at sow-gestation stalls. So many companies have stopped using them, and others are moving away from it, but you have those people out there who are still defending it. It’s going away, it needs to go away, let it go away.”

The Wall Street Journal had an important article about the progress we’re making against the inhumane practice of tail-docking in the dairy industry. And as far as progress is concerned, hot dog giant Wienerschnitzel and Jack in the Box are the latest major pork buyers to announce its plans to phase out gestation crates.
The Toledo Blade had a piece entitled “More black Americans are giving up meat and dairy,” and the San Jose Mercury News ran a good story about HSUS’s work with the Pleasanton school district to implement Meatless Mondays.
Finally, author James McWilliams has an interesting piece about HSUS today on Slate.

My BFF sent me a link to the Meat Eaters Guide to Climate Change and Health, from the Environmental Working Group. As she said, while we might not like this because it says eating meat is OK in the first place, it also finally addresses how bad cheese is for the environment! There you go, vegetarians: Cheese isn’t just about torturing cows, it’s also about killing the planet! A two-for-one!
The site is geared toward meat-eaters but it outright says to eat less meat and cheese, even suggesting Meatless Monday be Cheese-less Monday as well. Plus, it’s got hella posters and graphics!
They also have a quiz about the environmental impacts of meat—I do love a quiz! Embarrassingly, I only got a 50 percent. Hey, I know it’s bad for the environment, I don’t need to know the exact numbers! Actually, the staggering numbers seem to affect the omnis when you share them, so I should know them. Whatever, YOU take the quiz. Tell me what you get!
Big surprise: meat industry hates Meatless Mondays! »
Due in no small part to Megan Rascal’s marvelous cartoons, Meatless Monday is taking over, and those fuckers with big beef and pork are shitting their ugly, ill-fitting pants. GOOD. I wanna see you sweat, assholes. And look really, really stupid. Fortunately, that is something they do really well, as evidenced by this bit of gold:
The American Meat Institute, a trade group, unsuccessfully urged the Baltimore public schools not to join the Meatless Mondays campaign, arguing that poor kids needed the meat. “For proper nutrition there are a large number of lean cuts that you can eat and it doesn’t take a lot of it,” said Gregg Doud, an economist with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
LOLZ WHAT? That’s the best they’ve got? That’s how their ECONOMIST speaks? I mean, damn. With the addition of food service giant Sodexo to the Meatless Monday campaign, the movement is only going to get bigger and bigger. If the big animal ag wants to stay in the game, maybe they should get into broccoli-farming, or get the fuck out of the way. OK, I know that last bit is wishful thinking as there is STILL meat on the menu on Meatless Mondays and oh, yes, ON EVERY OTHER FREAKING DAY. Anyway, let’s keep this movement moving like a freight train and give these jerks something to really cry about.

Welcome to the very first Link-o-Rama of 2011! To celebrate, here’s a photo of our Megan Rascal’s perfect little princess Mitsy, featured last week on fuckyeahfelines, for obvious reasons.
And now, on to business! Let’s start with adorable animal stories to warm your heart on this chilly January day. Here is a very sweet video/memorial to recently deceased Taj, the elephant artist. Everything about it is beautiful, and here is a tissue, crybaby. This memorial to Paul the “psychic” octopus is a six-foot-high plastic statue and frankly, a mite garish, but “public demand from around the world” was so great, his aquarium had to do something, right? Totally.
Mind the whiplash as we move onto animal abuse! Out in Rancho Cordova (it’s like Sacramento), Calif., 50 bunnies were rescued from an illegal breeding operation run from “a recently condemned home,” which, sweet lord, those poor little rabbits. Our pals at Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary is now working to get them all adopted, which you can do through the Sacramento SPCA. Conveniently, Harvest Home is holding a Sanctuary Rabbit Spa Day tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. Go meet some buns, see how great they are, and help out a really good organization. Next let’s go to China and shut down this “farm” for swallows to make the nests that are eaten in bird’s nest soup; it looks like the missing link between an extra-horrendous Soviet-era apartment building and actual prison, and it is full of nesting birds. What happens to the “swiftlets,” a.k.a. the wee swallows for which the nests are ostensible homes? Mystery! Just like what happens inside those creepy cement walls. We know that Sweden is all about hunting wolves again this year—last year the government OKed the murder of 27, this year it’s 20. Wolves “are kept out” of the northern part of the country to prevent them eating up all the reindeer—whatever “ke[eping] out” entails—but this has led to pack isolation and inbreeding, the solution to which is clearly, obviously shooting some of them dead. Of course! Everyone is so smart.
Do they eat the wolves? We know love people love eating animals! Too bad a major report from the British government this week basically said, Meat production is totally unsustainable. Lions specifically got lucky this week, as another “let’s eat lion!” dude from Arizona (seriously what is it with that state?) bowed to public pressure and took the lion meat tacos off his menu. Now what will bored omnivores eat for thrills? GOD you’re a bunch of assholes. You’re also being completely fooled by food companies, whose claims of “health” and “structure/fuction” are poorly regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, because why wouldn’t they say anything to get you to buy their products? McDonald’s shows off its “all-natural ingredients” in its gross-ass “food” with realistic images of everything except the dead animals, which are presented as figurines. Maybe because no one who wants to eat chicken also wants to see what a dead fucking chicken looks like! On the positive side, Sodexo has chosen to participate in Meatless Mondays! Sodexo is a massive “food services provider,” this is kind of a huge and wonderful deal.
Now it’s been scientifically proven that eating more produce makes you objectively better-looking (Vegansaurus is staffed by very attractive geniuses, exclusively), maybe you non-vegans want to involve yourselves with us hot vegetable-eating bitches. If so, Laura wrote you a way better date-a-vegan guide than this nonsense from Grist, but we all know Laura is the cleverest, as evidenced by this week’s Three Vegan Dishes Worth (Temporarily) Ditching Meat and Dairy For, and The Week in Vegan. Like I said, very attractive geniuses.
Don’t forget to protest the dog show this weekend! Afterward—as in, beginning Monday and throughout the month of February—the SF SPCA is offering residents free spay/neutering services! Yeah, FREE. So you with the “intact” dog, do the world a favor and fix him/her, lest you burden the world with even more puppies it doesn’t need. WE HAVE ENOUGH PUPPIES.

Vancouver, we love you! Meatless Mardi at Provence Restaurants »
Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 19, a pair of Provençal restaurants in Vancouver, B.C. introduced Meatless Mardi, a three-course prix fixe menu for $25 CA ($25 US, our dollar loses worth by the minute). All the courses are vegetarian, with the option to be made vegan, but it looks like the last few menus have been fully vegan. Provence Restaurants, you are a dream come true.

The idea came from chef/owner Alessandra Quaglia, out of concern for the health of the planet and the people. Alessandra worked and studied in kitchens in the south of France. Inexpensive vegan food cooked à la provençal sounds AMAZING. Then again, what part of “three-course vegan dinner at a French restaurant” could anyone hate? Exactly.

Presumably the cost of living in Vancouver is significantly lower than in San Francisco, because a comparable menu at our finest vegan dining restaurant, Millennium, is $14 more. Can’t we have nice AND afforable things? At least for Meatless Mondays? Canada’s got that social safety net, and Kate Beaton, and gay marriage rights since 2005, and now reasonably priced vegan French food, too! It is NOT FAIR. Yes, yes, the seal hunt is horrific, but it’s not like we’re saints down here. Maybe we can perform a reverse-Jordan and find a nice Canadian fellow to take us away from all this. As long as we are taken directly to a Meatless Mardi menu at one of the Provence Restaurants in Vancouver. And then at the other location. Two dinners are better that one!

Killer news, you guys: a longterm study of nearly 130,000 people found that those participants eating lower-carbohydrate, higher-protein diets in which the protein and fats came from plant sources were overall healthier and lived longer. Moreover, the study “confirmed a ‘direct association’ between animal-based low-carbohydrate food intake in men and increased cancer deaths, particularly from colorectal and lung cancer. That association aligns with previous studies that have confirmed a link between red meat, processed meat, and those two types of cancers.” Whoops! Enjoy that bacon, hope you don’t mind dying at 50.
The National Institutes of Health funded the study, which began following 85,186 women in 1980 and 44,548 men in 1986. The vegetable-protein-eaters ate more whole grains and drank more alcohol—color your Vegansaurus surprised—while the animal-protein-eaters were more likely to smoke. And yes, the study took more “positive” lifestyle factors into account as well, like vitamins and exercise; our people still outlived the death-eaters.
This coincides nicely with what Nation’s Restaurant News reports as one of fall’s big trends: VEGETABLES! Everyone’s crazy about vegetables, and not just because they are so damn delicious! Did you know that “[p]rotein production uses many more resources and generates much more waste than vegetable production”? You guys, they’re learning and mending their ways! “John Fraser, the executive chef at Dovetail in New York City, introduced meatless Mondays earlier this year and has come to enjoy focusing on cooking vegetables so much that he said he is toying with the idea of opening an all-vegetarian restaurant.”
That brings a tear to my eye, it absolutely does. Science keeps supporting our choices, and chefs are backing us up with more cruelty-free dishes. Lucky us; when we do end up living to ridiculously old age, we’ll always be able to eat well.
