Sharecropping is alive and well in chicken country  »

Monica Potts has a terrific piece in the American Prospect about Tyson’s exploitation of immigrant farm workers. It’s powerful and informative, and everyone should take 10 minutes* to read it, and then pass it around.

The article highlights yet another great argument for veganism: the VAST majority of chickens are raised this way and the extremely small percentage that aren’t are crazy expensive, highly inaccessible, and still involve fucked-up murder. Tyson is a deplorable company and in so many ways, it never hurts to remind people that they don’t give a shit about anyone, animal or human. A must-read

And when you’re done with that, perhaps you’d like to read something that doesn’t make you want to fly to Arkansas and start busting lips. How about Donald’s story? He’s a rooster at Harvest Home Sanctuary! Please marvel at his cuteness and know that as a vegan, you can look at him in peace. I lifted that quote from some famous dead person (maybe Tolstoy?) but he’s long gone, so he’s probably okay with it. Anyway, I’m off to adopt a million chickens and move to a farm and never see or talk to another person again as long as I live. Except you, you’re great!

*or, OK, 20 minutes BACK OFF I READ SLOW BECAUSE WORDS MEAN MORE TO ME!
