Today is the first Flip for the Bill Tuesday at Nature’s Express! Every Tuesday in March after 4 p.m., you can flip a coin with the cashier, and if you win, Nature’s Express will pay your bill, up to $10! Once you’ve won, you can take that $10 you saved and buy a couple happy hour drinks. That is what we call “money management.”
Thanks to Molly at Nature’s Express for the heads-up (zing!).
Berkeley has a new vegan book club and you’re invited! The first meeting is this Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m.
Molly from Nature’s Express gives these additional details (thanks Molly!):
At the meeting we will eat yummy scones, crumb cake, and tea (no charge, of course!), and decide on the book that we will read in February.
The choices are:
Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer,
Tomato Land by Barry Estrabrook, or
Crazy Sexy Diet by Kris Carr
I’m so freaking jealous right now, because I love 1) vegans 2) book clubs 3) Berkeley 4) free food, but I live thousands of miles away so I can’t go! You ought to. Think of the starving vegans not in Berkeley.
And here’s my two cents on the book choice: If you haven’t read Eating Animals, you should vote for that one so you finally read it because it’s great. Otherwise, get three index cards, draw a picture representing one book on each of them, and then see which one your cat ignores the least.
Saturday: Berkeley Vegan Bakesale for Animal Place Sanctuary! »
Here are the details on Facebook, where you can also RSVP. If you’re not on Facebook, I get it, you’re better than me, but it’s in front of Nature’s Express in Berkeley (1823 Solano Avenue—get the Reuben and the vegan soft serve!) from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. All the proceeds will go to help Animal Place continue to be amazing and also, get even more amazing. So go! You know you want to! And you’ll be all happy and content like this little dude here:
Screening of Forks Over Knives in Berkeley! All monies go to charity! »
A FREE (with suggested donation of $15 to $25!) screening of the documentary Forks Over Knives* is happening Thursday, Oct. 28 in Berkeley. The money raised will go to The Cancer Project and Earthsave, and there’s a reception afterwards with snacks from Nature’s Express so don’t be too cheap even though you can be because it’s “suggested donation” and my natural inclination is to be all SUGGESTED DONATION THIS and grab my crotch because I’m a terrible person. Oooh…just had a thought! Perhaps there will be some delicious soft serve there? WHO CAN SAY?? Get your tickets TODAY!
*Oh, you want to know what the documentary is about? Yes, let’s see, it’s basically about how you can save your life through your diet so GO VEGAN! Which is true, just listen to the Big Dog. If you’re so nosy that you need to know more, check out the synopsis or the trailer below!
[can’t see the video? watch it at vegansaurus.com!]
Nature’s Express in Berkeley (we went to the opening, remember? And we’ve been back a couple times and it keeps getting better! Vegan Fast Food, marry us!) now has VEGAN SOFT SERVE. I wish I could make that an animated .gif with glitter around it and flashing lights pointing at it and have it light your screen on fire because this is some motherflipping N-E-W-S [Ed.: kind of like this?]. There are many places to get this in NYC, Chicago, and I’m sure in Portland because FUCKING PORTLAND WHY DO YOU RULE SO HARD I HATE YOU, but now we have it too HA HA. I haven’t tried it but apparently they serve it up on homemade waffle cones and its been on mega-sale the past two days and maybe this might continue? And by mega-sale we mean a huge waffle cone filled with it FOR ONE DOLLAR.
Our Berkeley hippie OTS (hehe) Katie says:
I’ve had two flavors now: apple cinnamon, which tasted just like my grandmother’s rice pudding, and Black Forest, which tasted like fresh cherries.
That sounds g-d tasty. Now, please excuse us while we go eat all of it. See you chumps there!
(Please note: that delicious photo isn’t from Nature’s Express, it’s from Sticky Fingers Bakery in DC—love them!—but it’s the best we got so heeeeey.)
Anyway, she said lots of nice stuff about the future of food heading in the vegan direction and it was lovely and inspiring. The had a limited menu at the grand opening but it’s all up now so check it out and then go support the vegans who are doing it to it!
Oh dude, they’re having a contest right now, win $1,000 worth of vegan food. Do it. To it.
Nature’s Express, a vegan fast food joint, comes to Berkeley! THANK YOU, HIPPIES! »
So how’s this for some bullshit? Solano Avenue in Berkeley/Albany, home to dozens of dining spots, HAS NO vegan establishments. What the hell is wrong with those supposedly granola-and-animal-loving Solano Ave. hippies? Well, the correct answer is A LOT. But lucky for us, things are about to change (at least in the realm of veg food…we don’t have a hopeful outlook on the crystal deodorant and wearing Birkenstocks-with-socks front).
Starting in early January 2010, the small vegan chain Nature’s Express is opening a branch at 1823 Solano Ave. in Berkeley. (Most people think of Solano as being in Albany, but the eastern part of the street is technically still Berkeley. The geography lessons are free, bitches!)
That’s right, soon you’ll be able to dine cheaply and cruelty-free among the hordes of aging hippie foodies. Great! But you ask: How cheap? How vegan? And is the food any good?
Well smarty pants, here’s the menu* from the Rancho Mirage location. Look, it’s cheap! And according to Molly Patrick, Nature’s Express General Manager for Northern Cali, everything is 100 percent vegan!
Yes, but is it nasty? Yelpers overwhelmingly like it. What? Those fools hate everything because they think that’s comedy?! Maybe that’s the case but they’re loving on Nature’s Express. And the ones who don’t probably shop directly from puppy mills. SO EVIL!
Anyway, Nature’s Express plans to open up shop in Berkeley around Jan. 6th or 7th. They will be celebrating their grand opening on Jan. 15, 2010. We will keep you posted about this event (free food!?) and the exact date they will open because that’s how we do!
*Of definite interest is the biblical burrito…wtf is that!? I’ll take it! Also, is this a cult? Not sure, don’t care. Oooh also, tempeh ruebens and chicken roll tacos and garden lasagna!? YES and YES and YES!
Thanks to Claude for this awesome insider info & fabulous post!!
