I’m bummed they’re closing but stoked that they’ll be zooming around the bay area, offering vegan Filipino food to all who desire it! Ms. Unterman of the SF Examiner fell in love with Gracias Madre, and Jun Belen thought No Worries is doing a good job, so far. In the Sacramento Valley, a man shot a duck, and discovered she had eaten herself an extremely engorged liver—foie gras-style, in fact. Real live naturally occurring foie gras, in pintail ducks eating oodles of rice! Neat! Unfortunately it’s just not as delicious as “real” foie gras, so they’ll just have to keep gavaging those geese (until all of those selfish creeps die). Shucks.
Feeling blue? How about some vodka? Barnivore will help you choose the brand, and this magnificent guide will teach you how to drink it properly. Once it gets cold (ha ha global warming, it’ll never dip below 50, right?), let’s have vodka and spicy + salty hors d’œuvres parties. I am particularly looking forward to the part where you “[b]reathe out loudly through your mouth emitting an animal noise.” I mean. Perhaps someone could try this hummus recipe by Nick Kindelsperger of The Paupered Chef? He does make it sound amazing, and not too terribly difficult.
Peta strikes again! Ingrid Newkirk herself has offered to put $10,000 toward Lindsay Lohan’s rehab bill if LiLo will go vegan for the remainder of her rehab, and if she maintains her vegan diet for an entire year, Peta will give her another $10,000. Who feels good about donating to Peta? LiLo hasn’t taken Peta up on Ms. Newkirk’s offer yet, but YOU NEVER KNOW. But it’s not like Peta has any standards for their celebrity spokesmodels, so why not another wearer of fur and leather?

Have you dreamed of growing your own shiitake mushrooms? You are in luck, San Francisco: the Studio for Urban Projects in conjunction with 18 Reasons presents a one-day workshop on exactly that! Led by Maria Finn, the workshop will take place on Monday, Nov. 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Studio for Urban Projects at 3579 17th St. at Dolores. Good news, panda-lovers: All of 19 little pandas were born in captivity this year as of last week, the most since 18 in 2006. Chinese scientists credit their success in part to the panda porn program, which shows dumb young male pandas what they’re supposed to be doing with the female pandas—you have no time for adorable, chaste snuggling, pandas. Get to business or die trying, as it were.
Animals who maybe could use a little less human intervention: your cats and dogs, which are all as MORBIDLY OBESE as ALL ENGLISH-SPEAKING WHITE PEOPLE EVERYWHERE, and the Medicare won’t pay for canine-sized Hoverounds, so stop feeding them from your dang plates. Seriously. If you really can’t resist giving your little puppykins treats, toss ‘em some vegetables while you’re chopping them up for your dinner. The dogs I live with eat everything except raw garlic and leafy greens; they love raw onion and every other piece of produce they’ve tried. It’s a win-win! Winston loves bananas, and look how healthy and happy he is! Or at least healthy.

Those are potato chicharrones from Plum in Oakland. They’re very good and greasy, kinda like a thick cut potato chip, only hella more expensive. I dunno, they were good but the more I think about it, I won’t be craving them and I won’t be back for another hit. I like food that turns me into a junkie, and this isn’t it. I love clean food with complex flavors, it’s that the dish didn’t DELIVER. That’s kinda how I felt about everything at Plum. The only standout dish I tried—and I tried everything vegan on the menu, and everything that could be made vegan—was the mushroom dashi with yuba, greens, and tofu. As my dining companion pointed out, it’s very difficult to make something with a clear broth have intricate, nuanced* flavors, but this really did it. It was so damn good, however, it was the ONLY dish I tasted that justified its price.
Let’s talk money. This is Depression 2.0, people. Folks WITH JOBS are digging in trash cans for half-eaten sandwiches and selling their kidneys for a pizza and shiz. Money is precious and I can’t be dropping hundies on inadequate eats YOU FEEL ME?? Our check came to $46 each for a round of small plates and a wine and a beer, and we both left craving something more. OH YEAH, and they put a “standard 18 percent tip” in the check, no matter how big your party is. We were told this right before the check was served—it was really fucking annoying. That shiz should straight be on the menu. I always tip 20 percent, even if the service is terrible (I was a waitress, everyone has bad days, etc.) but I dunno, something about that rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe I am just a Grumpy Gus and should shut up AND STILL I RISE.
I think Plum would be a good choice if you’re going somewhere with self-described foodies,** ya know. Or, meat-mouths who think they’re fancy. You’ll totally have enough options to not feel screwed, and afterward you can head down the street to No Worries to GET STUFFED.

I don’t know what else to say but VEGAN FILIPINO CUISINE. And it’s good and it’s cheap and it’s close to 12th Street BART in Oakland and you want it. First of all, if you’re familiar with Filipino food, you know that it’s not exactly the most vegetarian-friendly, and by “not exactly the most vegetarian-friendly” I mean that the last time I had Filipino food, they put pork in the green beans YOU FEEL ME? I dated a Filipino guy and his penis was a giant pork-filled lumpia YOU DIG?* I went to a Filipino wedding and the officiant was a chicken wing OKAAAAAY??? I don’t know, ignore me. But please continue reading.
Well, no more! No Worries brings the classic Filipino food, veganized. They’ve got Lumpia, Pancit, Adobo, Mungo, Tocho, and more. My favorite thing was the Kare-Kare, which is vegan meat, eggplant, string beans, and cabbage in this delicious savory peanut sauce. Only $8.95 for a giant bowl of it and another buck for rice. A huge tasty meal for under $10—not bad. Not bad at all. The deals get even crazier at lunch, where you get two dishes for only $5.95. That’s some insane EVERYTHING MUST GO shit, right there. Buy it all. Also, the interior is absolutely adorable, with a good amount of seating and photography from local artists. You could totally bring your parents here and they would be all, “Ooooh, classy.” or you, know, not want to leave. I don’t know about you but I can’t say that about lots of the businesses that I patronize.
What’s best, No Worries started as a business proposal in high school and grew to a straight-up full-on restaurant in about 10 years. That’s called following your dreams and that’s fucking awesome. Let’s all take this as a sign to follow OUR dreams, whether that means becoming a space astronaut or simply getting out of bed in the morning. DREAMS DO COME TRUE!

No Worries is finna open and beforehand, they’re doing it up with tons of food and cooking demos! Hell yeah! For a suggested donation of ten bucks, you get a plate of vegan Filipino food AND a cooking demo with head chef Jay-Ar Isagani Pugao at their restaurant (1442 Franklin St. in Oakland).
There are four events this week: two on Wednesday, Aug. 25 (that’s tomorrow!) from noon to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and two on Friday, Aug. 27, from noon to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.! You can walk in but it’s prolly best to keep it classy and RSVP. BTW, when you RSVP, you’re emailing a dude named Charles Lovelace. He should marry me because I really really really want to be Laura Lovelace. Or have him be Charles Beck. Either works!

We tried No Worries last year at World Veg Fest and fell in love. I mean, in luuuuurve. We ate so much vegan Adobo that we had to be wheeled out of this event dedicated to healthy living. OOPS! Anyway, at Veg Fest, the No Worries team was talking about plans to open in the Jack London Square area of Oakland and now we find out it’s really happening and they’re hiring (GET A JOB, LAZY! Also, we assume that by “welcoming appearance” they mean that you should pop a few buttons at the top of the blouse, honey.) Vegansaurus HQ(ish) is within spitting distance (how uncouth!) of their new location and you best believe we’re gonna be hitting this place up on the regular. And by on the regular, I mean I am the bird lady currently standing in front of their building. Don’t be afraid to say hi, JUST NO EYE CONTACT.
UPDATE: Heard from Jay at No Worries and he says they’ll be opening at 1442 Franklin St in downtown Oakland in September. So not spitting distance but walking distance (even for me, the laziest of JLS residents) (oh! and close to 12 Street BART!)
