Animal News You Can Use: Another ag-gag bill bites the dust! »
Good news! This week marked the death of North Carolina’s ag-gag bill, which appears to be the final pending ag-gag bill in the country this year. You can also listen to a radio interview of mine this week on ag-gag and other animal protection topics.
It’s not all good news this week, however: alas, a ballot measure in Missouri aimed at protecting puppy mills and factory farms seems to have squeaked by voters with 50.1 percent of the vote (though the razor-thin margin means that a recount is likely). You can read Wayne Pacelle’s thoughts on it here.
In better news though, Congressman Tony Cardenas (D-Calif.) is promoting Meatless Monday. You can read about it my op-ed in the San Fernando Valley Sun. And the New York Times ran a compelling interview with the president-elect of the American College of Cardiology about his vegan diet.
Finally, in cool news: Did you know that fish remember events from a year ago?
P.S. Video of the week: Ever seen a cat taking care of a clutch of baby chicks?
Ben the Bear is FREE! Our pal Ian at the Animal Legal Defense Fund alerted us to this wonderful news. After six years of being confined in a concrete cage as part of a roadside zoo in North Carolina, Ben is now living it up at the Performing Animal Welfare Society sanctuary in San Andreas, Calif. Look at him splash in his new pool!
Read more about Ben at ALDF, and thanks so much to the concerned citizens of North Carolina who sued on Ben’s behalf, and to ALDF and PETA for fighting in court for Ben’s freedom, and PAWS for taking him in. May he live a healthy and happy life amid the California oaks!
Awesomeness from the SPCA in Wake County, N.C. Seriously, this had me cracking up and I’m not sure why. But that lady on the skateboard in the end? And who is their camera person? He’s totally great. That dog at the end is also hilarious. I felt a little bad for him, but he seems to be chilling.

North Carolina lab workers charged with animal cruelty! »
[Can’t see the video? Watch on Vegansaurus.com]
Did you ever see this horrible video? It’s a Peta video of lab workers at a research facility in North Carolina totally abusing poor animals. It’s horrible. But guess what! Four of the former employees have been charged with animal cruelty! Yay! This is a big deal because normally research facility workers never get in real trouble. I hope they get totally fucked by justice! See? Regardless of how you feel about them, you have to admit that Peta does some rad stuff.
That is a very pretty melon arrangement, Sarah! Anyone else eating raw vegan today? Happy Thanksgiving!
