East Bay vegans! Come out to the Berkeley Dish Crawl! »
Dishcrawl, the eating event for people who mean Serious Business about their food intake, is doing an all-vegan event in Berkeley next week! They’re keeping the restaurants secret, but tickets are $39, there are eight left, and do you have a better way to spend a weeknight than with a bunch of hungry East Bay vegans? Don’t even act like you’re popular; what you want to do is attend this Dishcrawl and make some friends on your side of the bay!
This Berkeley vegan Dishcrawl starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Contact the organizer, Sarah, with questions, and get ready to get down. Will it be all Ethiopian and Flacos and spicy legumes? Or maybe it’ll be a pizza-and-cinnamon-roll extravaganza! You know we love Berkeley and its many vegan options; the only question is how you will get home after devouring the neighborhood. Is there a special taxi for vegans too full of food to walk? Probably there should be.

Sicilian Chickpea Fritters, WELL HELLO. These remind me of Megan’s addictive chickpea frittata and I’m about to get down on a basket of these things. And not like a decorative basket that holds potpourri, I’m talking about a basket to carry towels around at beach resort. Or a clothes hamper, that would be good, too.
You can buy these Vegan Bacon Guinness Salted Caramels on Etsy! And before anyone freaks, it’s the vegan type of Guinness! That’s bacon and beer in a caramel. EAT IT, OMNIVORE BITCHES. No, I mean, really, eat it. It’s delicious.
Vegan cookie spread (it’s ground up cookies that you spread on EVERYTHING!) is currently available at Cost Plus. They eat this shit like peanut butter in Europe because they’re smarter and better than us. Seriously, once you go cookie spread, you can never go back. To fitting into your clothing. GET UP ON THIS!
I’m currently obsessed (and I mean SINGLE WHITE FEMALE OBSESSION) with Isa’s Mac & Shews recipe. It’s by far my favorite mac and cheese recipe on the planet and not only is it great as a mac and cheese, the sauce alone KILLS on a baked potato and broccoli.
You’ll make a big plate of that and then drive by Wendy’s and some sad sack will be sitting on the curb out front eating their crappy microwaved potato with radioactive death cheese sauce and you’ll roll down the window and say either:
1) Pardon me, but would you happen to have any Gray Poupon?
2) HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES?! (while waving your food out the window, that part is key)
Oh, the friends you will make!
When I put out a call last week for a vegan cherpumple, little did I know, Megan at Down Home Vegan had already made it! It looks like the most awesome pain-in-the-ass EVER and I want it. Megan, you are a mad genius and I want to give you so many high fives, you have no idea. CHERPUMPLE!
No Worries! Oakland’s bringing it with the vegan Filipino cuisine! »
I don’t know what else to say but VEGAN FILIPINO CUISINE. And it’s good and it’s cheap and it’s close to 12th Street BART in Oakland and you want it. First of all, if you’re familiar with Filipino food, you know that it’s not exactly the most vegetarian-friendly, and by “not exactly the most vegetarian-friendly” I mean that the last time I had Filipino food, they put pork in the green beans YOU FEEL ME? I dated a Filipino guy and his penis was a giant pork-filled lumpia YOU DIG?* I went to a Filipino wedding and the officiant was a chicken wing OKAAAAAY??? I don’t know, ignore me. But please continue reading.
Well, no more! No Worries brings the classic Filipino food, veganized. They’ve got Lumpia, Pancit, Adobo, Mungo, Tocho, and more. My favorite thing was the Kare-Kare, which is vegan meat, eggplant, string beans, and cabbage in this delicious savory peanut sauce. Only $8.95 for a giant bowl of it and another buck for rice. A huge tasty meal for under $10—not bad. Not bad at all. The deals get even crazier at lunch, where you get two dishes for only $5.95. That’s some insane EVERYTHING MUST GO shit, right there. Buy it all. Also, the interior is absolutely adorable, with a good amount of seating and photography from local artists. You could totally bring your parents here and they would be all, “Ooooh, classy.” or you, know, not want to leave. I don’t know about you but I can’t say that about lots of the businesses that I patronize.
What’s best, No Worries started as a business proposal in high school and grew to a straight-up full-on restaurant in about 10 years. That’s called following your dreams and that’s fucking awesome. Let’s all take this as a sign to follow OUR dreams, whether that means becoming a space astronaut or simply getting out of bed in the morning. DREAMS DO COME TRUE!
*Kinda like how I dated an Italian dude and his dong was a triangular slice of pepperoni pizza. Mamma Mia! Thas-a spicy meatball! OMG GO TO BED LAURA.
