13-year-old boy comes to the rescue for neglected pit bull Princess  »

OK guys, I have a tearjerker for you! Like, I’m tearing up as I write. But first, do we have any readers in or near Atlanta? Or even readers who just know people in that area? Help find a home for this dog! I can’t believe her story hasn’t been picked up by the media (unless I missed it), it’s got TV news written all over it. And I’ve seen Broadcast News 11 times, so I know.

On to the story. My ECD (a.k.a. big boss) is from Atlanta and he’s a serious dog advocate. So when FB was kind enough to inform me that he recently “liked” a video of this dog Princess sitting on command for the first time, I watched the video. I was immediately smitten! I looked into it and found her page. Princess has a sad history but hopefully she has a bright future! She’s only a year or so; I like to think neglected dogs totally forget their early years once they’re in a nice home (I mean I don’t even remember what three-year-old Megan’s favorite cereal was! And I’m so serious about cereal! So maybe it’s like that). Do you think it’s true? Well that’s what I hope, and I hope that’s true for Princess.

Princess was purchased with the intention of using her to breed (that sentence is so infuriating. Like, who the eff BUYS pit bulls? There are a gazillion in shelters! Plus, who the eff BREEDS pit bulls? There are a gazillion in shelters!). For some reason or another, the guy who bought her didn’t have a place to house her (way to plan, dickhead). So Princess “ended up in the backyard of a family.” Not clear about that but I think it means she wandered into a family’s backyard and set up shop. She was skinny and too scared to let anyone touch her, so she hid in the bushes. That’s just such a sad image. All these people out there are running around scared of the powerhouses that are pit bulls and this one is cowering in the bushes.

Lucky for Princess, a kind young boy named Patrick took it upon himself to help her:

A 13-year-old boy, Patrick, would be her caretaker. A neighbor would help him gain her trust. Princess was finally coaxed, caught, spayed and vetted.

There were victories along the way, but after healing from her surgery, Princess would be an outdoor dog. Princess reverted to her old ways of hiding in the bushes and running from the family. It was decided she needs a home where she can be an indoor dog and receive the consistency and training she needs. Patrick & his sister have gotten Princess this far. Now we need someone to take her the rest of the way.

Is there anyone who can help her? Foster or adopt her? If you can, email the Atlanta Bully Rescue. I can’t foster her and I’m feeling a bit powerless, but that’s when I take to the internets! If you can’t foster Princess either but still want to help, there are two other things you can do! 1. Make a donation to the Atlanta Bully Rescue; 2. Share share share this story until we find her a foster! Or better yet, a forever home! I mean, really, look at this face:

UPDATE on Princess!:

Thank you for this spotlight on Princess. She is a wonderful dog who is making leaps and bounds and is still currently in the Atlanta area. Princess is in a boarding scenario where she is getting some time with a trainer in a sort of “sanctuary” environment but she is looking for an experienced foster or forever home. It will be healthier for her to continue her progress and rehabilitation if she can go ahead and get settled into a home soon. If you are in the Atlanta area and end up fostering or adopting Princess, you will have access to some training by the people who have been assisting her. If interested in applying to be a foster or forever home for Princess, please email AnimalRescueAssistance@gmail.com

Guys! I met a celebrity dog over the weekend! At my favorite local bar, I met this pit bull you see on the cover of the Itty Pitties 2012 calendar. I met a cover model! I forget the dog’s name* as I was a bit tipsy but she was super sweet and licked my hand and I love her. Look how cute she is! She’s all grown up now but still adorbs as all get up.
I know it’s already the end of February but that just means the calendar is on sale for $6! Then you too can enjoy 10 more months of adopted pit bull puppies.
*Update: Her name is Chompsky! Because she’s so good at linguistics and social analysis! Smartypants.

Abandoned pit bull near Sacramento   »

Sorry to break your hearts but I had to cross-post this. This poor dog was abandoned in Citrus Heights, CA (near Sacramento):

Male Pit Bull left behind in a 10x10 kennel after foreclosure. Not only pent up but on a chain, too! NOT AGGRESSIVE. He’s a bit shy when the kennel is opened for food and water, goes to the back of the kennel but once closed, jumps up and wags his tail. Vetting unknown, not sure if neutered. No Paws will pay $250 to a bona fide rescue that comes forward. Thanks so much.

If you can help, email cheryl@nopawsleftbehind.org. They also asked that you not post this on craigslist.

Chako Pit Bull Rescue has the absolute fucking best thing ever. Well, besides actual pit bulls, because they have them, too. It’s a calendar starring adorable pit bulls and sexy, sexy men! It’s so great because you can love it ironically or unironically and stuff like that is the best stuff. Kinda like anything R. Kelly does, and any show on the CW.
We got an email from reader Lindsey, the events coordinator for Chako, and an awesome vegan, and she says this about these SUPER SEXY and ADORABLE calendars:
We aim to alleviate persecution of pit bulls by finding homes for pit bulls in need, promoting responsible ownership, holding educational classes and workshops and last but certainly not least, standing up against breed specific legislation. We have a calendar available, Guys and Pit Bulls 2012 (hubba hubba!) and are trying to spread the word to help us raise much needed funds as we depend on money from things like this to stay up and running. More money=more pitties saved from euthanasia!
Girl, I’m SOLD! If there’s two things I love, it’s oily bohunks and pit bulls. If the calendars had cake in them, I would’ve already thrown my computer out the window because it can’t contain so much AMAZING. Here’s the direct link to purchase on PayPal (If that doesn’t work, you can just get it via the link on their homepage). Might I suggest giving it in conjunction with this bunny calendar? You can never have too many decorative calendars!
Oh and fan them on Facebook because pit bulls <3

Rescue Chocolate: greatest company ever, order everything!  »

You guys all know about Rescue Chocolate, right?! If you don’t it’s probably because you’re less charitable and compassionate than I but it’s okay. I will illuminate you and in return, you owe me your first born. Now, don’t EVER EVER had a kid and we’re even stevens!

Rescue Chocolate is an all vegan chocolate company that donates 100% of their proceeds to animal rescue. HOW RAD IS THAT? And the actual chocolate? I tried it this weekend when I was in Portland (JEALOUS?) and it was SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD. I had the Peanut Butter Pit Bull, which I bought strictly because it has a cute-ass pit bull on it, and I was expecting to LIKE it but I LOVED it! Usually dark chocolate is just too bitter for me because I’m a delicate flower but this was SO good — peanut butter mixed with rice krispies (SO SMART) and then coated with creamy dark chocolate. It tasted like a high-class Butterfinger and you know what they say about those things: If you lay a finger on my Butterfinger, I’ll murder your whole family.

Order everything (or buy at a local store if you live somewhere great) because they really are the absolute greatest and all vegan and all delicious and about to be all mine, so HURRY!

Inside pic of a PBPB, GIVE IT TO ME:

UPDATE 9/2/11: I am bummed to find out that Rescue Chocolate isn’t on the Food Empowerment Project’s list of places that don’t use slave labor to get their chocolate. I am sorry I didn’t check the list first, because it’s such a good guide and I really do want to support places that are guaranteed happy for everyone. Rescue Chocolate, please use the good stuff so I can go back to ordering massive quantities on the reg!

San Francisco Bay Area! Meet Gus! He’s pretty adorable, right? RIGHT. Well, he needs a home today and we wanted to help spread the word. Here’s what the woman who found him, has to say:

This stray little guy found us on your nightly walk yesterday. He’s really friendly and played well with our dog; and while he was a little apprehensive of us at first (for like a split second), he warmed up quickly. I would guess he’s a Blue Nose Pit, about 3-6 months old. He has fleas, but that’s easily remedied. I gave him a quick bath last night, so he’s cleaner than when we found him. We’ve taken to calling him Gus. If I cannot find him a home today, he’s going to the Berkeley shelter as I can’t keep him (one night is all I can manage). Someone please give this sweet little guy a forever home.

So really, this is a last minute effort to get Gus into a great home without having to go via the shelters. The woman who found him already knows about rescue groups but speaking from my own extensive experience with them, rescues are able to take in dogs when they have foster homes, and those foster homes go to dogs who are lined up in the shelters. So anyway, going through a rescue group isn’t gonna work in this situation! But if you’re looking for a terrific little bully boy, Gus is your man! I can also tell you from experience (I’m very experienced in many things. SLUT!), that pit bulls are the BEST — this guy just needs a quick de-nadding (er, neutering), a structured home with lots of exercise, discipline, and love, and many kisses. AND LOOK AT THAT FACE! If you think you have what it takes to provide a truly great, stable home for this rad little dude, please email Miles! Thanks!

Rosie the pit bull made me cry  »

Last Sunday July 24, New York Animal Rights Alliance America (NY-ARAA) held a demonstration outside the Brooklyn Animal Care and Control exposing the horrific mass euthanasia occurring in their New York shelter locations. Joining protesters at their local shelters across the country, the NY-ARAA dressed in red as a reminder of the unnecessary death that occurs daily at these kill shelters.

[Can’t see the video? Watch it on Vegansaurus.com]
The demonstration came to a screeching halt, however, when a badly injured pit bull named Rosie arrived at the shelter. Bearing tire tracks on her hind legs and backside, Rosie was clearly in pain and was seen dripping with blood, including form her muzzle, indicating internal damage. The protesters observed that she was likely hit by a car, and quickly came to her aid. Rosie had a stroke of luck arriving at the shelter on that particular day: the NY-ARAA removed her from the kill shelter and has arranged veterinary treatment for her while embarking on a search for a new family for the recovering pup. They’ve graciously set up a Facebook page for Rosie HERE—click the link and find out how you can help this beautiful girl!

Adorable deaf pit bull needs a (SF Bay Area) foster home (or forever home!) by MONDAY  »

Her name is Jane and she is so fucking cute and sweet and awesome and if I wasn’t headed out of the country for a couple weeks, I’d totally foster her!! HOWEVER, you can save her! Details copied and pasted below because I got a plane to catch, fools!

Can you help this little girl? Here’s the scoop on this dog, who needs to be out of SF Animal Care & Control by Monday—or she will not get out alive.

Perhaps you can foster, or you know someone who can foster, or if not, please forward this as widely as possible to anyone who might be
interested in rescuing Betty/Jane. Fostering is easy, fun, and best part: no commitment! You just take care of this sweet girl like she’s your own until she’s adopted. EASY PEASY.

Pali Boucher of Rocket Dog Rescue has a CIP/hold on Betty/Jane but the hold is only good until Monday. Though Pali has posted on Facebook (see below for more details), so far no one has come forward to foster Betty.

This wonderful sweet pit bull was “declined” because she failed part of her test because the tester didn’t know she was partly deaf. She needs a miracle to get her out of ACC alive by Monday. For more info please contact SF/ACC or text Pali at (415) 756.8188. If you can’t reach Pali, you can always contact SFACC directly about her at (415) 554.6364. Ask for information about animal ID number A302563, a.k.a. Jane.

Thanks so much for anything you can do.
