Get gourmet Philly pretzels right here in Brooklyn! »
Pelzer’s Pretzels, located in Crown Heights, BK, was started by a Philly transplant, in the hopes of bringing the Philadelphia soft pretzel game to NYC. Because really, Philly soft pretzels should be as ubiquitous across the country as the prison industrial complex! If not more so!
I emailed with Pelzer’s to find out if they had any vegan options. They have some meaty and cheesy pretzels but their everything, original and cran-mary are totally vegan! I even double checked because the pretzels were so shiny I thought they must be an egg-wash—nope! Veegs! Pelzer’s sent me those three varieties for free to try and some of their spicy beer mustard too. I shared the pretzels with my coworkers because I’m so nice to them. They were a hit! The spicy beer mustard went like hotcakes.
You can see just by looking that they are not like regular Philly pretzels, these are on some gourmet steez. They remind me of this super delicious pretzel I had at the Zurich airport once (Megan Rascal: International Hassle). The outside/skin/whatever is so amazing! It’s flavorful and thick and awesome.
I liked the original of course, and I liked the everything. I thought the everything would be my favorite as I’m an everything-enthusiast, and while I really liked the everything, I’m head over heels for the cran-mary! It’s cranberry and rosemary, if you didn’t get the name. I’m not super into cranberries but they were SO GOOD in the pretzel. And the rosemary? HAVE MERCY.

Love it! Totally Philly style too. Without the massive chip on the shoulder part.
In conclusion, these are a can’t-miss for any pretzel-lover and a definite boon for the accidentally-vegan Brooklyn food scene! All thumbs up!
Glorious Day: Center City Soft Pretzel Co. makes vegan Philly pretzels! »
Yesterday I proclaimed my love for Philly pretzels and lamented the fact they aren’t vegan. Guess what! I was wrong! For the first time in history! Lovely reader Flocka Veli emailed me to let me know that Center City Soft Pretzel Co. does make entirely vegan pretzels—in fact the whole bakery is dairy-free! I swear to goodness like a million years ago when I was vegan and living in Philly I looked up every pretzel supplier and found nothing. Silly me! I wrote to the company to confirm and they said the only ingredients are flour, yeast and water—and salt of course if you get salted (you really should get salted). Can you believe it? I don’t think you understand how excited I am. I’m more excited than pretzel day in fourth grade! Not kidding.
Not only are Center City Soft Pretzel Co.’s pretzels great—they are THE place to go to get pretzels. The bakery opens at something like 4am I think? To supply all the vendors in the city. And you can roll up and buy a zillion FRESH BAKED pretzels for like a buck. It’s amazing. And while I always love Philly pretzels, right out of the oven is a whole other level of goodness. Yes, me and my sister spent many an early morning buying way more pretzels than would ever seem necessary (they were all necessary) while my dad played designated driver. Thanks dad!
Best news: It looks like you can order them online! BUT! I can’t tell if PretzelsDirect exclusively sends Center City Soft Pretzel Co. pretzels or if maybe they sell pretzels from multiple companies. If someone wants to call and ask and let me know, I would love you forever. I hate calling people. I hate anything you have to do in real life.
UPDATE!!! I emailed! They only send Center City Soft Pretzel Co. pretzels so we can totally order them and have them shipped! Yay!

I received a sweet email from Mina Azarnoush about her new blog eatrun-love. She’s a recent UC Berkeley graduate with a degree in Nutritional Science and she used to make the vegan/raw desserts for the Berkeley Student Food Collective. Interesting! What’s more interesting is these vegan jalapeño “cheese” pretzels! I love pretzels so much, I would eat pretzels constantly if I could. They’d be like, “hey! There’s Megan with those pretzels again! That girl and her pretzels.” Cheesy ones sound yum!
Dark Chocolate Almond Butter Covered Pretzels from Eat Drink Better! So simple, so genius. Dark chocolate. Almond butter. Pretzels. I want you! I especially love how they are made with pretzel rods because those are my jam. I’m all about nibs and rods! Ew, not like that, perv!
