Spicy burgers and bulldog margaritas: Vegan Super Bowl eats from Jerry James Stone!  »

imageJerry James Stone just doesn’t quit! Do you read Cooking Stoned? It’s not all vegan, but his vegan recipes are out of control. Look at these bulldog margaritas! You can tell a quality party drink when it looks like a party all by itself.

imageIf you served them alongside his spicy butternut squash and black bean burgers (with quinoa and pepitas!), you would be the best Super/Puppy Bowl party host ever. Ooh, your friends would say, gourmet vegan food AND adorable animals playing sports? You are our favorite friend!

Alternatively, you could make them for your Oscars viewing party (Feb. 24). Bulldog margaritas and spicy burgers can improve almost any social gathering up to 43 percent!

Laura brings the most pertinent cuteness to Jezebel, and then we bring it to you, because that is the circle of blog life. The point is, itty bitty Bandit at Peace, Love, and Pit Bulls wants to go on the treadmill SO BAD! Look at him try!

For further puppy antics, give yourself the gift of the Puppy Bowl locker room live cam. Once last week I saw four little puppies all tugging on the same green stuffed toy. It was magical and soul-renewing. My whole internet life right now is puppies; what better way to start 2013!

Welcome the starting lineup for Puppy Bowl IX!  »

Puppy Bowl is back! We love Puppy Bowl, because puppies + adoption = television GOLD, and we are super-happy to alert you to this year’s starting lineup. The Puppy Bowl IX players are here! Let’s size them up!

My favorites this year are Daffodil, of Harley’s Haven Rescue in Souderton, Pa., because look at THAT FACE. She is like the platonic ideal of That Puppy in the Window and I just want to make her happy.
image

I am also pretty enamored of Sally, from North Smithfield, R.I.’s Furever Dachshund Rescue. She is long of ear and body, and short of leg, which are qualities I appreciate in a dog.
image

Finally, ol’ Lenny here, from Gimme Shelter in Sagaponack, N.Y., because he looks tough. It’s hard to look tough when you’re an itty-bitty puppy with tiny milk teeth and awkwardly oversized paws.

Who are your favorites? I’ve never picked an MVP, but that doesn’t matter when you’ve got a football field full of puppies. Puppy Bowl IX airs at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, on Animal Planet.

Update: Blitz is totally going to kick A because her name is Blitz and she’s wild-eyed! -Megan

Cats watching the Puppy Bowl from Buzzfeed! Oh Buzzfeed, you know me so well.
Did you guys watch it? I didn’t see the whole thing but I watched it for a while. It was kind of rough and tumble! I worry for the puppies. If you missed it, you can see clips on Animal Planet’s site. Apparently Fumble was the MVP. Congrats, champ!

This is Bubbles, a member of this year’s Puppy Bowl’s Piglet Pep Squad. HI BUBBLES! Buzzfeed got to visit the studio in Manhattan where Puppy Bowl was filmed and hang out with the puppies, kittens, and piglets participating in Puppy Bowl VIII.
I have several thoughts about this. First, why wasn’t Vegansaurus invited? Megan Rascal single-handedly runs our NYC HQ and that girl loves pigs. Yes, the likelihood of her putting a piglet in her purse and making a run for it would’ve been high, but can you blame her [Ed. note: I would do it. -Megan]? Look at those FACES.
Second, these piglets come from Ross Mill Farm, and that is unfortunate. Puppy Bowl puppies are all shelter dogs. Puppy Bowl kittens are all shelter kittens. Why not borrow piglets from a farm sanctuary? Or, you know, not include animals people can’t adopt? I am not complaining about pictures of adorable piglets! But I don’t like to put up photos of zoo animals, however devastatingly cute, because zoos are (mostly!) animal prisons, and I don’t like Animal Planet’s encouragement, however implicit, to buy piglets.
You guys, my enthusiasm for Puppy Bowl is dampened. This is depressing! Yes, Ross Mill Farm appears to keep excellent facilities; they seem to have a process in place to screen potential pig-owners, including a fostering program and an adoption program, which is awesome! But they also breed pigs for pets, while encouraging adoption. I’m torn. One thumb up? Man I hate having a conscience.

Gothamist has behind-the-scenes photos of Puppy Bowl VIII! You guys, this is like getting preview passes to the opera! Or is that just exciting to me? Whatever, PUPPIES! Look at my girl Brandy, all tuckered out from a big day of clobbering the competition! Brandy for MVP!
You’ve got to check out all the photos. Best news of all: This year, “a piggy pep squad will ‘ham’ it up on the sidelines and squeal with delight for their favorite pups.” The Puppy Bowl was made for me and Megan Rascal! And, fine, everyone else who loves puppies and kittens and pigs (a.k.a. everyone with a SOUL).
Double-bonus: This preview video features about three seconds of the pigs![Can’t see the video? Watch it at Vegansaurus.com!]

It’s time for Puppy Bowl VIII!  »

Let’s get ready to PUPPIES!

This year, Brandy of the Pennsylvania SPCA is my MVP!

With Aberdeen of the Sullivan County SPCA

and Friday of SRL, Inc. as close runners-up. I love a maltipoo!

Puppy Bowl wrap-up!  »

Animal Planet reported record highs in Puppy Bowl viewership! The premier drew in 1.7 million people and the total viewers for the entire day of re-airings was 9.2 million. Yowza! That’s kind of hilarious. I watched for a bit and it was mesmerizing. The kitty halftime show was a must-see! CB, Jonas’ pick, was declared MVP! Big deal—Calvin should have won. But whatevs.

I wanted to know if any of the players were adopted so I did a little detective work for you guys—because I’m the best—but despite being basically Sam Spade, I couldn’t find much about most of the puppies’ current adoption status. The main thing is that the Puppy Bowl was filmed in October! This is shocking! Scandal! I thought it was live. By now, over three months later, I think most of the puppies have already been adopted and have been taken off petfinder. Here are the ones I did find info for: Big Red's adoption is “pending application approval.” Jack was adopted. Mae was adopted. And then according to people on Facebook, CB was adopted. But I’m willing to bet all the Puppy Bowl stars have been adopted by now because, hello! They’re adorbs!

Protest the Golden Gate Kennel Club Dog Show!  »

Here’s some whack shit about dog shows: they glorify and encourage breeding, while millions of dogs die in the shelter system each year; the American Kennel Club is an incredibly powerful lobby that cuts off any legislation aimed at curbing breeding; these shows are sponsored by gross-ass dog food companies like Pedigree and Iams (you would think these fancy assholes would know better than to feed such crap); and most egregiously, they’re not Puppy Bowl.

Dog shows are some bullshit, so go protest the shit outta this one! The only dog show I want to watch is Best in Show and that’s mainly because Fred Willard is my future grandfather. I’m not sure how that works but I’ll make it happen.

The protests will happen from noon to 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 29 and 30, at the Cow Palace at 2600 Geneva Avenue in Daly City. All you have to bring is your own self, dressed in black. Please do not bring your animal pals!

From the organizers:

Our message will be that not only can you rescue pure bred dogs from shelters and rescue groups, but more importantly, it is not about what the dog looks like! People adopt animals because of the joy, love & complete loyalty they provide us, completing our lives & filling them with happiness. If people who buy dogs from breeders “love the breed” they would not contribute to the death and suffering of dogs in shelters of that same breed. Please come out and be a voice for these animals & let people know that breeders KILL shelter dogs’ chances at LIFE!

For details, please contact Shani Campbell of United For Animals at (925) 819/6752
[That’s Lightnin Hopkins, a bloodhound who was rescued from a shelter after a breeder dumped him (classy!) and Fred Willard at a screening of Best in Show at The Castro. It was a fundraiser for Rocket Dog Rescue!]

Puppy Bowl!!!!  »

Videogum introduces the 2010 Puppy Bowl starting lineup!! Needs more !!!!!!!!

Why should you care about the Puppy Bowl? It is sponsored by disgusting-ass Pedigree, which is The Worst, and it’s all HEY PUPPIES without any of the HEY RESPONSIBILITY parts, which is what leads to shit like spending $1,000 on a super-special puppy and abandoning it two weeks later when it pees on the floor and doesn’t stop barking when you yell at it.

HOWEVER: the majority of the puppy bowl players are mixed breeds. Further, you cannot be a human being with a heart and begrudge puppies their adorability. Look at Jersey Boy, he is basically a blonde otter. COME ON.

Even further, puppies are objectively more entertaining than dudes in shiny outfits knocking brain damage into each other. Professional football is no Friday Night Lights, and if you need to spend 10 hours with the television on while you bicker through a mouthful of seven-layer dip about who’s the better runner or whatever with your friends, I posit that puppies both make for superior background TV and subjects of debate.

Don’t argue with me, I am on the side of PUPPIES.
