SF SPCA’s holiday window display of adoptable animals debuts Friday at Macy’s!  »

Catch the unveiling of the SF SPCA’s annual holiday window display of adorable, adoptable animals at Macy’s Union Square on Friday! Beat back your case of Seasonal Affective Disorder with an eyeful of baby animals who want to be your best friend! 

Last year this display led to more than 325 animals finding forever homes, and almost $80,000 for the SF SPCA! Awesome. Also of note:

The SF SPCA needs volunteers to help spread the holiday cheer at Windows by greeting the public, collecting donations, and directing visitors to the SF SPCA pop-up adoption center inside Macy’s. The 2-hour shifts do not require special training. Groups are welcome, and children are invited to volunteer alongside their parents. Each holiday window will be equipped with a video camera that streams images to sfspca.org/holiday, so you can watch the kittens and puppies from your computer.

For those who can’t make it to Macy’s, the SF SPCA will be waiving the adoption fee on  adult animals adopted from the permanent SF SPCA Adoption Center at 250 Florida St. [from] Nov. 16 to Jan. 1, 2013.

Check out the window unveiling at 5 p.m. on Friday at Macy’s Union Square, at the corner of Stockton and O’Farrell streets in San Francisco. Yes, the darkness encroaches as the winter solstice draws nearer, but an animal companion warms your heart (and lap) even on the coldest nights.

We love the SF SPCA and we love adopted animals,* which makes this weekend’s Homecoming Adoptathon an ideal even for those of us—you, me, everyone else—without a companion animal to find one, already, and fill that hole our hearts we are currently stuffing artisan vegan cheese into with a furry creature who really will love us back. Fuck a human friend, what you want is an animal. Dogs don’t think you drink too much! Cats maybe are a little concerned with your “professional” wardrobe but they would never say so. And bunnies are never too tired to greet after another endless workday with a full minute of I-love-you hops.

The SF SPCA is ready to help you remedy that forever alone situation this weekend, with two days of adoptathon fun. On Friday, Sept. 14, get down with free booze and free adoptions, plus food from Voodoo Van, which appears to have one vegan option (though you’ll be in the Mission, legit snacks won’t be far off); adoptions are on from 1 to 8 p.m., reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Then on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., continue wooing the animal companion of your dreams with free adoptions, plus a foster care bake sale, and Q&A with a trainer. You know you have to train your dog if you adopt one, right? An untrained dog is an unhappy dog! Plus you can’t take it to the park to play with the other dogs if s/he never learned to socialize. The adoptathon continues on Sunday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with more free adoptions and more bake sale.

Are you ready for a furry best friend of your very own? Maybe a dog small enough to put in a large bag, who loves to catch (soft!) frisbees and curl up behind your knees for an afternoon nap? Or someone with big paws and jaws to wrestle with? Someone to call your “four-legged child” because you and your partner aren’t into human kids? The SF SPCA wants to make those dreams come true this weekend. So get over there and make yourself and a lonely animal happy.

This Sunday! It’s Dogs Day on the Bay!  »

This Sunday July 22 Hornblower Cruises is hosting a fundraiser for the SF SPCA from 11am - 1pm. The annual Dog Day on the Bay event is a champagne brunch cruise around the SF Bay and you can bring your dogs! Dope! We’re assured there will definitely be vegan food options. All the details can be found on their website. Now, let’s look at this hella cute graphic and marvel at how FUCKING ADORABLE cartoon dogs are. 

Part two of the SF SPCA’s anti-puppy mill campaign!  »

Remember when Megan gave you the heads up about the new SF SPCA anti-puppy mill campaign? Well, part two has been unveiled in downtown San Francisco, and is available for you to see until Friday afternoon!

Krista Maloney of the SF SPCA says, “We’ve installed a ‘puppy bin’ in the highly trafficked plaza at the intersection of Sacramento and Drumm streets, near Embarcadero Center. The bin looks like a typical newspaper stand, except the glass front is a video of puppies. Within the bin is The Canine Tribune, featuring articles about puppy mills. It will remain there until 3 p.m. on Friday, May 4.”

You can see that Megan Rascal’s Figgy is concerned. Those puppies are his peeps, yo!  He would go see the campaign himself, but he’ll have to settle for the video, as he resides on the East Coast [though he says hi to his BBDO SF homie Ian!].

SF SPCA starts new campaign against puppymills and we like it!  »

The SF SPCA has a new anti-puppymill campaign and it’s pretty cool so far, and they promise more cool stuff to come! They’ve partnered with ad agency BBDO to create this great fake puppymill ad. I know some nice BBDO people in their New York office; this is the same agency that ingeniously autocorrects monkeys out of their writers’ scripts.

This campaign was inspired by some sad discoveries the SF SPCA made:

A recent SF SPCA survey of San Francisco dog owners showed that buying online was the number-one place where people got their dogs. The survey showed that approximately 30 percent of puppies purchased in San Francisco are from puppy mills. 51 percent of those who purchased dogs online would not knowingly purchase from a puppy mill, yet 19 percent don’t know about puppy mills; hence the need for education.  

Jeez louise. Puppymills are so depressing. I’m worried my Figgy came from a one but I have no idea. He was a purebred-looking stray in Pennsylvania—home of the Amish puppymill industry. As you probably know, if they don’t sell them as puppies, puppymills have no use for male dogs. The females can be turned into baby-machines, but the boys? Why spend effort and money taking care of bunch of male dogs you brought into the world when one or two can impregnate all the girl dogs on their own? They usually just kill the extra males (and we’re not talking euthanasia!), but maybe Fig broke free and set out on his own. Totally Fivel of him.
