Seven day challenge to “Get Crunk” with Bianca Phillips starts today!   »

Let’s get crunk this week, you guys. Seriously! Starting today, Cookin’ Crunk author Bianca Phillips is teaming up with both Vegan Mainstream and Book Publishing Company to launch a seven day “Keep On Crunkin” challenge, as a social media campaign for her cookbook! Each day Bianca will share tips and recipes on her blog, Vegan Crunk. The posts will then offer a social media option that you can take to Twitter, Facebook or Pinterest, with a chance to win some awesome prizes, including cookbooks and Cookin’ Crunk aprons! According to Vegan Mainstream, if you’re on twitter, use the hashtag #KeepOnCrunkin to join the conversation at anytime. Being a huge fan of pretty much anything Bianca does, I’m pretty excited to check out what this week-long challenge is all about!

Plus, remember, these recipes take literally DAYS if not WEEKS to achieve. This Mikoyo lady is kind of a task master.

The rad people of Vegan Mainstream want to make a Vegan Events app! To help you find cool vegan stuff to do wherever you are! Or as Katie explains, it will allow users to “effortlessly search a comprehensive mobile directory of vegan events by city and date, submit events for listing, and share events on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. It will also be paired with a companion website that provides more detailed event information. And (bonus!) it will be 100 percent free for anyone to download!”

Not bad, right? They’re trying to raise the $2,000 they need for development through Kickstarter, and with an April 1 deadline they’re already halfway there. If you’ve got a few bucks to spare this week, consider giving it to this cause. Vegan Mainstream is great, this app seems awesome, and vegans should always try to help vegans. Community support!

Philly.com has a message for you: not all vegans are white! I really never got this stereotype, maybe because I’m from Philadelphia and the first vegans I ever knew were Black Panthers. Of course, it makes sense if there are more white vegans in the US than other ethnicities because there are more white people in the US than other ethnicities. Bonus: the piece features Vegan Mainstream’s mom!

Vanity Fair has an interview with one of my faves, Brigitte Bardot! She gets into her love and activism for animals. 

“I am not playing political games,” she says. “I don’t care. I don’t bother with that. I belong to no party and I am militant for no one. All of my causes, including the most radical, are motivated by the defense of animals.”

Funny birdie wakes his kitty bff!

First up, our own Sarah M. Smart was interviewed by Grubwithme! I am late in reporting this because she forgot to tell me about it. I forgive her because she calls me a saint in the interview. My favorite part is the last question where she says she doesn’t want to give too much away about what’s to come—like we are a soap opera! We totally are. Stay tuned!

Um, the Canadian government is going to start poisoning wolves with strychnine and shooting them from planes. Read what Grist wrote about it because I could not have said it better. Ok I’ll add one point: WTF. 

From Pawnation, the 5 best ways to keep your pets’ teeth clean. I just had to get poor Mitsy’s teeth cleaned, they put them under to do it! And Figaro has to go in soon and they even said he needs extractions! I’m so nervous for him!

 If you want to be grossed out, and you know you do, here’s the 10 grossest pictures from a charity oyster slurping competition. Whenever people bring up the oyster thing, for one, I’m like, uh people used to say fish couldn’t feel pain either. So you never know. But even if oysters don’t feel pain, EW THEY ARE GRODY TO THE MAX! WHY would I WANT to eat them? They are like little shells of mucus! If I want to eat garlic butter, I do not have to put it on a loogie first. Put it on an artichoke or drink it straight, but I’ll pass on the loogie.

Have you been following PETA’s lawsuit Tilikum v. SeaWorld? I guess it just wrapped up with the judge deciding that the 13th Amendment does not apply to non-humans. I thought it was a very interesting case. Should the 13th Amendment apply to non-human animals? I don’t know but it’s definitely an interesting idea. Second discussion topic of the week!

Per usual, I slipped up last week, so this spans a couple weeks. Leave me alone, I have a real job!

National Geographic has a nice infograph about the LEGAL wildlife trade in Asia. It’s ill. I would have posted it but it’s too big to post the whole thing so go check it out.

From One Green Planet, vegan wine pairings! I love my wine and you know this.

Grist wonders, is Idaho a safe haven for CAFOs (Confined Animal Feeding Operation)? Damn, Idaho, that’s whack.

Ke$ha is the Humane Society International’s new Global Ambassador. All right.

Wildlife officials in upstate New York “are squealing over ‘captive hunts’ upstate that have flooded three counties with out-of-control feral hogs.” Squealing.

This is kind of a big deal but I don’t have time to write a good post on it so maybe it can be our discussion topic: A new economics study confirms Namibian seal-watching is worth 300 percent more than seal hunting. I’ve heard of things like this before, where like safari-type tourist things could be worth more than elephant ivory and whale-watching could bring in more cash money than whale-killing. Have you guys? Seems pretty awesome. There should be an organization that JUST focuses on this. Money makes the world go round!

Our favorite guilt-ridden omni, Sami Grover from Treehugger, says all the meat eaters should eat less meat! It’s totes true.

Vegan Mainstream says our Laura is a vegan mover and shaker! That Laura, she’s so lovable. And foul-mouthed.

Gothamist taste-tested the Dun-Well faux-gras donut and the foie gras donut, and the dudes who made the actual dead-goose-liver pastry were all, The fake one is good, but we won’t be making a vegan version ourselves because vegans have “a FUBU mentality when it comes to vegan delights.” Which, buddy, do you know how much more business you would get if you offered novelty fancy vegan food? So much.

Refinery29, of which my favorite ex-boyfriend is a founding member, has a nice vegan shoe list: 12 Vegan Shoes That Aren’t Fugly. Some of the usual suspects, but several I hadn’t seen! And YOU KNOW I seen a lot of shoes. I like those first loafers, buy them for me.

Vegan food at 7-Eleven!  »


Really, we know there has always been vegan food at 7-11 like potato chips and all that good stuff but this week they tested out vegan meals at 7-Elevens in New York and Philly. I was able to score some dumplings at the 7-Eleven at 23rd and Park in Manhattan for you guys. Well, for to tell you guys about. 

I was disappointed when I saw what they have, it’s just these three “Macro-Vegetarian” meals—two things of dumplings and one lo mein. They sell these macro vegan meals like everywhere and your mom’s house, that’s why I wasn’t all that jazzed. I used to buy the pad thai one for lunch at the deli near my school UNTIL THERE WAS A BUG IN IT and I never bought it again. For you pals though, I braved it and tried the Shanghai dumplings pictured above. They are all right. These things are always all right. They are like kinda good but really just kinda OK. That’s my official ruling! “Kinda OK.”

But the taste isn’t really the point! [Ed.: oh no?] The point is we vegans are still taking over with a BOOOOM. We are dominating. I’m a little worried though that this is the meal all the 7-Eleven-goers will think we vegans eat all the time; it’s going to encourage that “vegans eat crazy stuff” stereotype. What do we all think?
