image

Vegan Happy Hour is back at the Hemlock Tavern! How awesome is it going to be?

All one has to do is bring something—anything!—vegan to share. There will be drink specials and a DJ, too. In the past few months, we’ve had build-your-own sliders, fajitas, awesome grain salads, tamales, insanely good cookies, and tons of other tasty treats.

So awesome! So get to the Hemlock, 1131 Polk St. in S.F., from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 10. Bring a dish, bring some crafts, bring your beautiful self and all your gorgeous friends. Make vegan pals! Drink! Dance! Share! Community and fellowship, you guys; it’s like vegan church but way more debauched. Details on Facebook.

Got a tip about an awesome vegan-friendly event? Let us know! We love fun!

Happy Hours, Movies, & Bakesales: Vegan Valentines-y Events!  »

Whether you’re in love with love or hate everyone (or both! it’s possible!), here are some ways you might wish to celebrate V-Day.

1) Vegan Happy Hour on Friday, Feb. 11! It’s got a romantical theme, too. And don’t forget, two awesome vegan cookbook authors are in town for events so maybe they’ll be there and you can woo them with your sweet words/tasty potluck additions?? Anything can happen, it’s Valentine’s Day weekend! Let that fat fucker shoot you through the heart with his terrifying arrow. Sweet love.

2) On Saturday, Feb. 12, there’s Lovers and Liberators: A benefit for the Red Vic. The lineup is a little complicated but definitely Bold Native will be screened and Cinnaholic is providing cinnamon rolls. WHAT COULD BE MORE ROMANTIC? RSVP (?) on Facebook, Romeo.

3) Also on Saturday, attend a Raw Divine Desserts class. Make vegan desserts and them eat them off your LOVA. Or eat them sobbing under your blankets. It’s delicious either way!

4) On the actual day, go get really fat and then try to find love at the Vegan Valentine’s Day bakesale at U.C. Berkeley! Oh don’t be so selfish, fatty, it’s for a good cause: Harvest Home Sanctuary!

As far as super romantic VD dinners, It’s probably too late to get reservations anywhere good, so why don’t you cook your honey a fine meal at home? The nerds at KQED always advocate it—check out last year’s (vegan!) recipe for Heart’s Desire Beet Salad. Nothing like a beet to heat up the kitchen. That’s my advice to you for February 14. Happy love-making, lovebirds.

It’s Vegan Happy Hour tonight in San Francisco!  »

Just like the second Friday of every month, today is Vegan Happy Hour [Ed.: join the Facebook group so you always know when it’s COMIN ATCHA]! VHH is a monthly gathering of vegans and people who love vegans at the Hemlock Tavern (1131 Polk St. in San Francisco). It’s a potluck, so bring some vegan eats and come on down to meet and mingle with other laid-back vegans over a beer—or a ginger-and-cranberry if that’s more your style. You can also enjoy the DJ AND VJ stylings of Mike Desert, spouse of this Vegansaur, who will be spinning records and showing off his latest seasonal video mashup! Don’t worry if you don’t have time to make something fancy, swing over to Trader Joe’s and get some sweet potato fries or baguette and hummus to share.

This is the first VHH of 2011, so let’s make it a good one, vegans! Come on down and meet some new people, eat some delicious food, and roll home happy.

Vegan Happy Hour at the Hemlock tonight!   »

A quick post to remind you that tonight (as is every second Friday of the month) is Vegan Happy Hour! I know some of you know the drill, but for the uninitiated, what you do is grab/make some food (Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods stuff is fine, as long as it’s vegan!), grab your eatin’ pants, and head on over to the Hemlock Tavern between 6 and 9 tonight. Never been before? Don’t know anyone? NO PROBLEM! Mike, who usually DJs the event, is making a rare appearance hosting the food portion of the event today. Look for the big guy with the tattoos plating vegan food, and say hello! You’ll be mixing it up with new and exciting vegans before you know it. Oh, and be sure to follow Vegan Happy Hour on Facebook, so you can stay up to date on the monthly themes, and get easy, portable recipes to try!

Need some quick and easy recipe ideas? Look no further! I’m bringing pumpkin pie. Just sayin’.

Hello friends, it’s WTF Wednesday!  »

Hello and welcome to “WTF Wednesdays,” an exciting new Vegansaurus feature. Notice that I did not spell out the F word because I want this post to be classy and family-friendly. Kind of like Hooters, but without the chicken wings. Or the girls in tight-fitting uniforms. Or the deep-fried pickles, which are, admittedly, the best part of the Hooters experience. Here is how you can make them! See, we are learning already!

Now, let’s jump right into the fuckery (oops!) going on this week!
First up, we have a bear who got killed for being a bear. The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) officials said that the black bear and her cubs were “causing trouble,” so they “euthanized” her for committing her “third offense.” Oh, OK. I didn’t know you could communicate with bears, Montana FWP. I’m sure this was a difficult decision for you and I’m also sure that you read the bear her fucking rights after arresting her for her last offense, in which she TURNED OVER SOME GARBAGE CANS with her cubs. The bears had already been caught once during the summer and relocated to another part of Montana, but surprise, they returned to their home in the Helena Valley. An FWP game warden in Helena is curious how the bears found their way home and suggests that they “have some kind of homing device.” NO SHIT, idiot. I know where I live, too. And I bet if you were kidnapped for doing what you do, taken to a different part of the state, and let out into the wild, you would find your way back to your home, too. How are animals different? Because they can’t talk? What is wrong with you?

Even worse, the article reports that “residents…know to keep their garbage cans and pet food indoors,” because the bears are around. That’s right; bears scavenge from garbage cans sometimes. Sometimes they kill chickens, too. You people were told to keep your shit inside, but because you chose not to be responsible for your garbage, a mother bear was murdered—so now you’re responsible for the death of one bear, and the lives of her two orphaned cubs.

OK, what’s next? It’s a woman who shot an alligator. Oh, but it’s not just any alligator. It is her first alligator! It weighed 1,025 pounds! And killing it was apparently “the hunt of a lifetime!” Congratulations on being a horrible person, Maryellen Mara-Christion of Fitchburg, Mass.! Did you guys know that it is illegal to shoot a free-swimming alligator in South Carolina, where Maryellen killed this one? For a second, I thought this woman would get into trouble, but no, it’s legal to shoot an alligator once you have used “large snatch-hooks” to prevent it from swimming. Then you can shoot the alligator with a gun, or harpoon—hunter’s choice!

Unfortunately, Maryellen’s gun was not of sufficient strength to kill the alligator which, after two hours, she had hooked to the side of her boat, so when she discovered that shooting the alligator wasn’t going to finish it, Maryellen decided to attack the problem more directly, BY PLUNGING A KNIFE INTO THE ALLIGATOR AND SEVERING ITS SPINE! Charming! Equally charming is Maryellen’s description of the killing: “It was just shake, shake, shake,” she said. “I was shaking for a long time after, but that happens when you hunt.”

Maryellen says that each animal she hunts is a “unique experience” and that she is not “afraid of the alligators.” Seriously? YOU HAVE GUNS AND HARPOONS! What about an alligator is frightening to you and your arsenal? Oh, and you’ve hunted black bear before, too, have you? AWESOME! Maybe you got the chance to orphan some cubs, just like the Montana FWP!

So that’s all for this week. I am hoping to make “WTF Wednesday” a weekly thing, and I hope you will help me! If you happen to come across something amazing/fucked-up/dramatic that pertains to vegans, vegetarians, adorable animals, animals singing, or anything else that is SUPER-AWESOME during your travels on the information super-highway, please send me a link at my brand-new email address, mark@vegansaurus.com. If sending me an email is too much commitment (I know, we’ve only just met! But I’ve never felt this way about anyone else!), please link things in the comments!

Have a great Hump Day!
