Jerry James Stone does it again! Today, a cucumber-green tea mojito, to celebrate the spring that has totally sprung in Northern California. Here on the other coast it’s all gray skies and wind and precipitation, but we can look on these beautiful drinks and dream of warmer weather, right? Sunshine in a glass.

Blood orange sangria by How Sweet It Is! Because you’re worth it, and by “it” I mean “day-drinking in the winter, everyone’s been sick and overworked and cold, make yourself happy with the fanciest oranges and some delicious, delicious liquors.”
Do you think this would work with regular oranges, too? Or is the beauty of the blood orange half the appeal?

Spicy burgers and bulldog margaritas: Vegan Super Bowl eats from Jerry James Stone!  »

imageJerry James Stone just doesn’t quit! Do you read Cooking Stoned? It’s not all vegan, but his vegan recipes are out of control. Look at these bulldog margaritas! You can tell a quality party drink when it looks like a party all by itself.

imageIf you served them alongside his spicy butternut squash and black bean burgers (with quinoa and pepitas!), you would be the best Super/Puppy Bowl party host ever. Ooh, your friends would say, gourmet vegan food AND adorable animals playing sports? You are our favorite friend!

Alternatively, you could make them for your Oscars viewing party (Feb. 24). Bulldog margaritas and spicy burgers can improve almost any social gathering up to 43 percent!

It’s almost Christmas! It’s cold and dark (it drops below 30 at night out here!) and we need booze and fat and sugar to keep us warm and fat and awake! Also something aesthetically pleasing, to keep the SAD at bay. Lucky for us, Meagen of Vegan Food Addict whipped up this wonderful antidote to the December grays: a chocolate peppermint martini! Get into it! (Seriously, I want to Dita Von Teese this thing and climb in.)
PS: Need something warmer? Try Angela Liddon’s ultra-creamy mocha hot cocoa. I bet it’d take to booze pretty well.

You know, sometimes I think Vegansaurus should have a cooking show, though the only one of us who writes her own recipes is Jenny. Maybe I could just make her drinks (such as this tremendous spicy margarita!) while she magics up some Heaven Dogs. Actually, that seems kind of genius, right?

SF Vegan Drinks is tomorrow night! It’s your monthly chance to meet your fellow Bay Area vegans in the (cruelty-free) flesh. Check out that menu! Are fried beets any good? I mean, duh, what fried food isn’t good, but still! Beets! 
SF Vegan Drinks happens from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, 2323 Mission (at 19th Street) in S.F. Check out Facebook for more info! Be there, or be sober and poorly fed!
And, of course, the original Vegan Drinks takes place tomorrow as well at Fontana’s Bar on the Lower East Side in New York. For more info (and there is a lot of info), visit the website.

Let’s drink with Bay Area Bites! This is Jerry James Stone’s strawberry-mint mojito, made with blonde ale, and it looks gorgeous. Mixing beer with liquor seems like delicious danger, which we are totally into. Taking a little risk is good for the constitution.
We’ve got the local strawberries, home-grown mint, and rum; you bring the ale and we’ll have cocktails on the patio, yes please!

Guest post: Eating vegan in Mexico City: Pulqueria Las Duelistas in Centro Histórico!  »


Welcome to Vegansaurus’ weeklong guest series on eating vegan in Mexico City! All content by Rika of Vegan Miam!

I spent all of April in Mexico City (Distrito Federal), the capital of Mexico and the largest city in North America. Mexico City is divided into colonias (neighborhoods). In this series, I’ll guide you through a few of the colonias I explored, and some of the beautiful, delicious vegan food I ate.

All the neighborhoods are unique in their own ways; you just have to decide want you want to do, and eat. Tip: If you don’t speak Spanish, have some phrases prepared about to your dietary preferences. Many people speak some English, but there’s no guarantee.


The Centro Historico district is largely known to tourists since it embraces Zócalo (aka Plaza de la Constitución), the largest square in Latin America. There are plenty of historic colonial landmarks to see in that area, but this is about the food! So let’s drink some pulques at Pulqueria Las Duelistas. (Drink along on Twitter!)

Pulque is a traditional alcoholic beverage made from the fermented sap of the maguey plant (known for fermented agave), and most of them are made vegan. They are a must-try! However, I wouldn’t recommend drinking them on the day of your departure, they move through your digestive system quickly.


Guayaba (guava) pulque; apio (celery) pulque in a glass rimmed with lime, salt, and chile, and in a pitcher. The glass of guayaba cost 20 pesos (approximately $1.50 US), and the pitcher of apio cost 40 pesos (approximately $3 US).

Welcome to summer, won’t you join us on the patio for a drink? This is a lavender mojito from the girl and the fig, a Sonoma restaurant featured on Bay Area Bites. I got so distracted by the idea of making a fancy-bath-soap-style boozy drink that I have no idea who they are or what they serve: I just really want an herbal drink!
