The Vegansaurus Diet: Momzilla! »
Welcome back to the Vegansaurus Diet! This week features Louzilla’s mom, who “decided to try to eat vegan for a week while [Louzilla’s] dad was off visiting his family in Arizona. She didn’t end up doing it 100, but maybe something like 90, which is still really awesome!” It is awesome; good job, -zillas!
What does a meat-loving omnivore eat when she tries out veganism for a week?
Breakfasts: 2 cups of coffee (black) every morning. Then, after exercising, oatmeal with chopped walnuts and a cup of OJ, or occasionally some peanut butter spread on toast.
Lunches: Usually leftovers from dinner, or a peanut butter sandwich–no jelly for this fruit-hater.
Saturday: I made spaghetti with “wheatballs” from Robin Robertson’s Vegan on the Cheap. Topped with Newman’s Own marinara sauce and rounded out with a side of steamed kale.
Sunday: We went to the grocery store and picked up some rosemary artisan bread and veggies. I sliced and pan-fried onions, red bell peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, and eggplant and tossed it all with a dash of balsamic vinaigrette. Spread some homemade hummus on each slice of bread and put it all together while Mom made a side of oven-baked sweet potato fries with sea salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. mmm!
Monday and Tuesday: I wasn’t home for dinner these days, so no pictures, but Mom made and ate cabbage and leek soup from 1,000 Vegetarian Recipes.
Wednesday: Puttanesca. This picture is deceiving, because there are really more veggies than that but it wasn’t mixed well and they all ended up at the bottom topped with the spaghetti! I would totally link you to the recipe for this meal that we can both always agree on (and is super easy to make) if only my mom could remember where she found it!
Thursday: Again, I wasn’t home, but Mom had the rest of the leftover spaghetti & wheatballs. She just finished heating them up when our microwave of 28 years died!!
Friday: Stir fry made with leftover veggies from Sunday’s sandwiches and seitan based off this recipe, served over quinoa and with a big salad.
My two biggest celebrations from this week are that I got my mom to try hummus (which she’s always said she didn’t like) and seitan (which she’s always been leery of) and both were successful! What does she have to say about the week? She found herself craving meat, doesn’t want to give it up for good, but is still trying to decrease her consumption of it. Overall, a huge leap forward from when I first went vegetarian 5 years ago!

Monday, Jan. 24.
Vega shake (chocolate flavor mixed with water) and coffee with coconut creamer. The thing with Vega is, it tastes DISGUSTING but makes you feel SO ALIVE. I’ve never had a protein shake make me feel the way Vega does. Seriously, I feel like I could punch out Superman! I want to puke while I’m drinking it (it does not help that it looks and smells like puke) but afterwards, my head is clear, my eyes are bright, and I have weird amounts of energy. Freaky.
Lunch is my patented “Couscous Surprise.” Actually, Jonas patented it but I innovate on the base so ANYWAY. What I do is, I put Israeli couscous, half a Field Roast Chipotle sausage, some broccoli, a dash of olive oil, a little vegan chicken broth powder, some nutritional yeast, spices galore, and water into my rice cooker and BAM! half an hour later, Couscous Surprise! This dish is very tasty and delightful. Highly recommended. My lunch dessert is a pear. BORING, it’ll get sexier/fatter at dinner, I promise.
For snack I had one of those high-fiber fruit bars from Trader Joe’s. They’re all right-tasting and full of fiber!
Dinner was the new Loving Hut on Irving in the Inner Sunset with the lovely Eve Batey. We split the Ocean Basket (deep-fried vegan fish and green beans and mushrooms), a mango salad, and this tofu veggie vermicelli thing. Oh, and fried bananas and ice cream. Everything was okay, if a little bland. And then later when I got home, I had a piece of leftover Maggie Mudd ice cream cake. Delicious. God, I love that fake frosting flavor, I have such horrible taste in everything.
Tuesday, Jan. 25
Since it probably took you half an hour to read about my Monday, I’ll get more succinct up in this bitch. For breakfast today, I had a vaginal exam. After that, I enjoyed two cups of coffee with coconut creamer, a molasses cookie, an apple, and a pear. Lunch is chia seed gravy with tofu, spinach, and broccoli over quinoa! Love that chia seed gravy. I snacked on TJ’s fruit leather and one of those delicious maple leaf cookies they sell. Dinner was cooked at my parent’s house so we could watch
downloaded legally recorded Big Love. We made spaghetti with a zucchini and mini heirloom marinara and the Trader Joe’s meatballs and a big salad with Sabra spinach and artichoke hummus and some herb slab bread. It was all very delicious and OMG BIG LOVE SO SCANDALOUS.
Wednesday, Jan. 26
A bowl of Trader Joe’s Oh’s (or whatever the fuck they’re “cleverly” named) with almond milk, a pear, and coffee with coconut creamer. BAM! For lunch, I had last night’s leftover spaghetti and two diet Hanson’s sodas. I love soda, one of my new year’s resolutions was to drink more of it and I’m no quitter! Except when things are hard! Then, I had a TJ’s Laxative Fruit Leather. For dinner, homemade Mac and Cheese with quinoa pasta and loads of broccoli (my own recipe, it’s the bomb, one day when I’m feeling less lazy, I’ll share it with you)! The last of the Maggie Mudd ice cream cake which ended up giving my funky tummy. I will also say that I was at Maggie Mudd’s the other night and they only had TWO vegan flavors on the board WTF? Oh, and BEER. I enjoyed some beer.
Thursday, Jan. 27
Coffee with coconut creamer, laxative bomb fruit leather, and Trader Joe’s Oh’s with almond milk. I totally forgot to have lunch because it was a crazy crazy day and was starting to feel shaky, so I stopped at Whole Foods and picked up some cucumber and avocado sushi (what’s up, Rascal!), a Synergy kombucha, a banana, and a ProBar. Ate everything but half the ProBar but not because it’s gross, just because I was full. I stopped in the downstairs cafe to eat like a proper human and they were doing wine tastings. Nobody else was indulging so the wine lady poured me three giant glasses of wine. No clue what the wines were but this is probably because I had three huge glasses of wine. Cheers! For dinner, I met with two wonderful ladies, Amanda and Leda, for Vietnamese food in the place that’s where Yum Yum House used to be on Valencia (it’s now on Divisadero!), Thanh Tam II; we split spring rolls, tofu with string beans, white rice, and veggie noodles. It was pretty all right. I think if I still lived nearby, I might get it for delivery, but no, in this neighborhood, I prefer Sunflower for Vietnamese food. Sometimes people complain about our mainly positive restaurant reviews but the thing is, we mainly review the places we really love. Or that really suck. Maybe we should do more places that are like, O-KAY. I dunno? Thoughts? I AM VERY SLEEPY, GOODNIGHT.
Friday, Jan. 28
Vega + coffee with creamer! Lunch is chia seed gravy over broccoli and multi-grain crackers with eggplant garlic dip. Late afternoon snack is roasted Brussels sprouts (olive oil, salt, pepper, balsamic vinegar; roast at 425 for 20 min!). 6 p.m. rolls around and I’m craving chocolate like crazy so I make a pan of Fat Bottom Bakery fudge. Waiting for that cool because I want some before I go see a movie with my mom tonight. I’m gonna fall asleep during it, guaranteed. Now, MORE WORK! Goodnight, sir.
Saturday, Jan. 29
Coffee with coconut milk creamer. A million episodes of Breaking Bad. Made some chickpea “tuna” salad (YUM) and ate that and Sabra Spinach and Artichoke Hummus (YUM) with multigrain crackers. Then, I indulged in some of yesterday’s fudge. I packed it in. I really love FUDGE!! Then, I cuddled Hazel and took a nap—not really food-related but digestion-related. Next, picked up sushi and soba and goma-ae and edamame and miso soup from Cha-Ya in Berkeley and took it to Minty and Damien’s house to meet their 3 day old baby, who is named Sally, and is beautiful and perfect in every way. I wish I was a baby, what a life! All just eating and sleeping and people cleaning you and hugging you constantly. It’s like I always say: It’s a baby’s world, we’re just living in it! Oh, this is a good time to mention that I also had two glasses of wine. Red wine! Heart healthy! Anyway, delightful visit with delightful people (and dogs and cats) and then so, we came home for more Breaking Bad and cider and garlic fries. GARLIC FRIES!!! Now, fudge? Or, sleep?
Sunday, Jan. 29
Coffee with vanilla soy milk! Then, some dried mango and a carrot. Fast-forward to lunch, which is Souley Vegan gumbo (delightful spiciness with okra, tofu, and seaweed), collard greens, southern fried tofu, and mashed potatoes with gravy, split with Jonas. Followed by some vegan gummy worms. For dinner, we made Red Curry with Rice and Purple Kale. I’m really loving that recipe, except I used hemp seed oil as the oil and it’s my first time cooking with it and it has a gross-ass fishy smell. NO ME GUSTA.
Monday, Jan. 31
Having a down day today so it’s time to eat! Actually, today didn’t motivate me to eat so much as cry in a corner. Anyway, I made myself hot chocolate for breakfast and ate some leftover red curry for lunch. I had an apple and four Candy Cane Joe Joe’s and then I wasn’t super hungry or motivated so I had some chickpea salad for dinner and a big glass of soy milk. Th-th-th-that’s all, folks!

[Ed.: Megan wrote a whole lot of excuses as to why she didn’t vary her routine or cook a lot this week, which frankly is 0 percent important when compared to the fact that she recorded a regular old week of vegan eating. You think models are embarrassed to have eaten, like, the same $30 salad from the same restaurant for a month? NO. And you’re vegan, you’re obviously more interesting than someone whose job is “skinny.”]
Tuesday, Jan. 11
I start the day with my favorite breakfast: multigrain english muffins with Earth Balance and grape jelly! Plus, two Yves breakfast patties; I love those little guys. Vegan sausage is generally a solid bet, am I right? I always recommend sausage items when I take the omnis somewhere new. Then I had about five to 10 clementines. I can’t help it! They are so good! Of course I’d prefer satsumas but they just aren’t very good on the East Coast. Sad face.
For lunch, I had what I’ve had for the last two weeks: sushi! I only like avocado rolls so that’s what I had, along with edamame and veggie spring rolls. Then I had 10 to 12 clementines.
Snacks: tamari almonds and—drum roll!—clementines!
Dinner: An Amy’s non-dairy burrito. I like ‘em.
Wednesday, Jan. 12
Today for brekkie I went a little crazy and mixed it up: apples and peanut butter! It’s not just for children. Today I had a Honeycrisp apple but I’m really into Pink Ladies—Gala apples are totally played out. For lunch I had sushi and edamame again. For dinner I had a toasted multigrain english muffin with peanut butter and strawberry jelly. Nothing beats a PB+J!
You’ll notice a lack of clementines. I ate them all yesterday and then it snowed and I was too lazy to trek through the snow for some more.
Friday, Jan. 14
Apples and peanut butter for breakfast! Sushi and edamame for lunch! For a snack, I had two Lightlife sausage links and a cup of applesauce; it’s a good combination. I think I like the Yves sausage patties better but the Lightlife is a solid alternative—they have more flavor—but they’re a bit tough. For dinner I had Dr. McDougall’s roasted peanut noodle! Apparently it’s in his “Asian Entree” series. I’m a big Dr. McDougall fan—have you tried the miso ramen? It’s out of control. I’m a big peanut fan too so I was very excited when my interests came together in noodle form. It wasn’t the most amazing thing ever but it was pretty darn good for something that recommends you microwave it for best results. Lastly, for dessert, I had toast with I. M. Healthy chocolate soy nut butter.
Sunday, January 16th
I had a lovely breakfast: oatmeal and a chocolate chip banana muffin from ‘Snice, with Earl Gray tea of course. For dinner, I ordered from Dao Palate! It’s a vegan pan-Asian place. It’s yummy! I got spring rolls and pad thai (pictured left).
Monday, Jan. 17
I had an english muffin with jam for breakfast. Sushi for lunch, duh. Now for dinner, I had some crazy good stuff! It was my sister-in-laws birthday and we had a big party for her at Gemma in Manhattan. The waiters were so nice and got me all kinds of vegan food! I had bruschetta that had these killer grape tomatoes; then a nice little salad; pasta with tomato sauce and basil for the entree; and raspberry sorbet for dessert! And champagne—lots of champagne.
That is my week in eating! My diet is basically the same as a 10 year-old’s, a 10 year-old who really likes sushi.

The Vegansaurus Diet: Scrumptious S! »
I eat the kind of diet that makes people’s jaws drop open in disbelief, right before they say, “But what can you eat?” I can’t eat wheat/gluten and I don’t eat animal products. As long as I’m cooking for myself there’s a whole universe of food for me, but heaven forbid I should want to sit in a cafe for more than a few hours, because if hunger strikes when I am out in the world and I don’t want to spend a ton of money, I’m basically screwed.
I subscribe to Capay Farm’s Farm Fresh to You CSA and I write a blog about my CSA adventures (I’ve tried out three different CSAs so far), so a lot of my meals are built around what comes in my CSA box.
Friday, June 4
I’m on this huge breakfast burrito kick, which is basically saving my life because for a while I just could not figure out vegan, gluten-free (GF) breakfast. I use La Tortilla Factory GF teff wraps, and I brown them in a cast-iron pan so they’re all crispy outside like Cancun burritos. Today my burrito had refried beans, a scoop of leftover rice bowl made with black rice and dandelion greens, salsa, half an avocado, and a little Daiya cheddar, which I’m not sure yet if I like or not.
For dinner tonight I had leftover sweet potato and black bean enchiladas with roasted green chile sauce, recipe courtesy of one of the most fantastic GF, mostly vegan blogs ever, Gluten-Free Goddess. I make them with a little stripe of soy cream cheese down the center of each enchilada, and they are incredible.
Saturday, June 5
Breakfast was soft polenta made in the rice cooker, my favorite no-stress, lazy-ass way to make polenta. I added half a mashed avocado, salt, pepper, and a big squeeze of lemon juice. I’ve been eating a ton of avocados lately. I think I’m going to cry when avocado season ends.
Leftovers for lunch. In an attempt to streamline my cooking process, which can sometimes take hours for a single multi-course weeknight meal, I’ve been trying out a new cookbook from the library this week, Vegan Express by Nava Atlas. So lunch was her aloo ghobi with cauliflower and Klamath Pearl potatoes, both from my CSA, and creamy chickpea curry (the creamy is from coconut milk) from another blog I like, Beyond Rice and Tofu. There wasn’t much left of the leftovers, so I also noshed on a chai Bumble Bar to fill in the gaps.
Sunday, June 6
Dinner was another Vegan Express recipe, pasta carbonara with tempeh bacon and baby broccoli from my CSA box. I used Tinkyada brown rice pasta, which is so delicious I actually like it better than wheat pasta. And I made salad, red leaf CSA lettuce with toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds.
Monday, June 7
Leftover pasta carbonara for breakfast. I love leftovers for breakfast. Unfortunately these leftovers put me into a carb coma (I don’t eat pasta very often), so I had to take a nap. A nap! After breakfast!
Amy’s Rice Bowl (brown rice, broccoli, and black-eyed peas) for dinner, topped with a ton of homemade kimchee. I love Amy’s; vegan, gluten-free, under $5 (way under, with a Rainbow coupon), and healthy-tasting. Awesome! The only drawback is I don’t have a microwave so it takes nearly an hour in the toaster oven.
Tuesday, June 8
I tried another new Vegan Express recipe for lunch, with many modifications. I ended up with a delicious concoction of quinoa, bok choy from my CSA, edamame, toasted cashews, and mandarin oranges.
Won the lottery for rush tickets to Wicked tonight! We tried to go to Golden Era for dinner, but of course they’re closed on Tuesday. (I actually knew that, I just didn’t know today was Tuesday. Go, me!) So we went to Pakwan instead and split saag aloo and baingan bharta. Rice for me, naan for the boy.
Thursday, June 10
I had a hectic morning so I threw an Amy’s in the toaster oven, this time Mattar Tofu with peas and dal and rice and stuff. I always sprinkle a bunch of mustard seeds on top of the Indian Amy’s because I’m total a mustard seed-addict.
Tuesday’s quinoa-and-bok-choy concoction is like one of those neverending cornucopias in fairy tales, constantly refilling itself with a new supply. I attempted to make a dent by having a hearty portion for dinner along with more of my beet greens and tofu from earlier. I also made more fudge brownies, but did my best to give them all away because I’m not really eating sugar right now. I do love to bake, though, so I try to surround myself with people who love sweets and then stuff them full of homemade treats for my own pleasure. It makes me feel a little like the witch in “Hansel and Gretel,” but I prefer to think I’m spreading joy. Who doesn’t love brownies?
