Quorn is going vegan! So reports VegNews. Quorn’s freaky, fungus-based faux-chicken patties were some of my favorite back when I ate eggs—really moist and different. Though it totally creeped me out to put eggs in fake chicken.
Props to Compassion Over Killing which helped prompt the new offering (I think they’ll still make their non-vegan ones too)!
Anyway, the vegan burger should hit over 1,000 stores nationwide next year. Let us know if you see them!

Make it: the famous Farmhouse veggie burger, VEGANIZED!  »

I love veggie burgers personally and professionally, so when I say this is the best veggie burger I’ve ever had, you better believe this veganized Farmhouse veggie burger is the best veggie burger you’ve never eaten. Unfortunately, the original recipe isn’t vegan, but with one small substitute, it can be yours! And that one substitute is Daiya cheddar (or any shredded vegan cheese, but Daiya is comes shredded and I’m already working for this burger, you know? Why the extra work?). Then, just follow the recipe as is and BAM, PERFECT VEGAN VEGGIE BURGER. Well, I’ve never actually MADE the burger (details!) but the friends who made them and invited me over said that they did just as the recipe said, subbed Daiya, and roasted the cubed eggplant at 400 F for about 20 to 25 minutes with olive oil sprayed on it, because sauteing takes longer and we gots to eat!

Seriously, make these, and serve them to your friends and family on crusty rolls with Wildwood’s garlic aioli, roasted red peppers, and caramelized onions. OR just eat it straight out of the pan, which is what I did. And then I deglazed the pan and ate that with a spoon because I’m the grossest. YOU’RE WELCOME!

Incidentally, I played Bananagrams for the first time last night. What fun! I need more of that in my life; we all do. Life is short, there’s no such thing as too many veggie burgers and too much Bananagrams. PEEL!image
[Note: I did not take this photo, but your burger will look something like that. If it doesn’t, you really fucked up.]

You’ve got lunch plans: veggie burger power hour!  »

Our own Laura has taken over the reigns of Eater SF’s Burger Week and she’s turned it veggie for the day! Enter the Veggie Burger Power Hour! At 11 a.m. Pacific/2 p.m. Eastern, get a veggie burger for lunch and tell the world! When you get your veggie burger, tweet about it with the hashtag #vegburgerarmy! Laura says, “If you can add a picture, that’s major bonus points! I’ll be posting or re-tweeting the most delicious, so your brilliant lunch will be admired by many.” OMG you could be Twitter-famous!

For you SF folk, you have extra time! Laura is holding the Power “Hour” from noon to 2 p.m. Same deal: tweet it with the #vegburgerarmy hashtag!

Laura says, if you don’t make it out for a veggie burger today, “I’d still like to hear your votes for best veggie burger in San Francisco (or around the country, she can pass them on to the National folks!) for possible highlight on the site. Just email them into me here with ‘Veggie Burgers!’ in the subject header. If your favorites make the cut, you’ll see your burger (and name!) in lights. Woo!” Wow, Laura sounds so pro on Eater! And by “pro” I mean SQUARE. [Ed.: Truth!]

Top 10 links of the week!  »

RIP Knut. Knut the polar bear died this week and it’s very sad. But don’t worry! He’s going to be stuffed and mounted! Vegetarian Star has the details.

New York is crazy for veggie burgers! The New York Times is totally in love with veggie burgers this week. I’m like, way to be late to the party! But welcome all the same.

Laura busts heads. If you didn’t read our Laura’s response to that lame Ecosalon piece, read Luara’s response to that lame Ecosalon piece.

Laura plays nice. AOL City’s Best interviewed our own Laura! She’s blowing up. I’m not the least bit jealous—her coattails suit me just fine! You go, girl.

Tsunami dolphin saved. There have been some bittersweet animals stories coming out of Japan, not the least of which is the rescue of a little baby dolphin in a rice field. There is a picture on the other end of this link, boy is there a picture.

Breast milk from cows. Um, in China, they are totally creating cows that produce human milk. I’m sure they are treating the cows really great too. People seem grossed out but how is it any grosser than drinking regular cow milk? I ask you. Both come out of cow nipples.

Saber-toothed vegetarian? Everyone is so excited about this new discovery: a saber-toothed vegetarian monster! (Monster is the scientific term).

More oil, more problems. Nightingale island, home to half the world’s population of northern rockhopper penguins, is covered in oil. People are working to save the cute, funny-haired penguins but there is a lack of supplies and help on the remote island. This is a bummer. I don’t think I’m getting a joke out of this.

Get ready for kitten season! Kitten season is just around the corner and Paw Nation has ten really great tips on caring for your new bundle of indifference.

New York City murders geese. New York is set to kill more Canada geese, see what you can do to help stop them!
